Notes: The energy spectra of fast electrons produced by ultrashort, high-intensity laser pulses were directly measured using a magnetic spectrometer with an imaging plate. The typical temperature was 350 keV for irradiation on 30 μm thick copper film by pulses of width 43 fs, intensity 2.7×1018 W/cm2, repetition rate 10 Hz without artificial prepulses and was found to be close to the ponderomotive potential. In addition, the energy spectra of high-energy photons, which are expected to be produced from the electrons, were calculated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: (AlAs)n/(AlP)n (n=1–3) short-period superlattices were grown by gas-source migration-enhanced epitaxy at a low growth temperature. Dynamical-theory simulations of x-ray diffraction patterns were conducted and showed good agreement with experimentally obtained patterns. In addition, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy analysis was performed, which confirmed that high-quality short-period superlattices of AlAs/AlP were grown. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Growth rates of individual leaves attached to sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants were measured experimentally under different levels of environmental productivity, modified by irradiance and nutrient conditions. The unfolding rate and final area of an individual leaf increased with increasing environmental productivity. The final area of an individual leaf also varied according to differences in leaf order. The declining pattern of relative leaf area growth rate (RLGR) varied with environmental productivity; leaves in a productive environment had a longer period of high sustained initial RLGR than leaves in a less productive environment. However, maximum RLGR was hardly influenced by leaf order or environmental factors such as irradiance and mineral nutrition.

Notes: Abstract  · Background: The sequential retinal changes in Syrian golden hamsters induced by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) have not been studied. · Methods: Female hamsters received a single intraperitoneal injection of 90 mg/kg MNU at 50 days of age, and the retina was examined light and electron microscopically, immunohistochemically and by the TdT-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labeling (TUNEL) method until 20 weeks after the treatment. · Results: The retinal changes were as follows: (1) Photoreceptor apoptosis occurred 1 day after the treatment and resulted in photoreceptor loss at day 7. During the degeneration, Müller cell proliferation was conspicuous at day 5. (2) After the photoreceptor cell loss, migration of the pigment epithelial cells in all layers of the retina which were in contact with blood vessels occurred. Due to the Müller cell proliferation, gliosis was prominent at the later stage. · Conclusions: The MNU injection caused photoreceptor apoptosis followed by pigment epithelial cell migration around the blood vessels, accompanied by gliosis. The primary event and the course of this disease closely resemble those of retinitis pigmentosa in humans.

Notes: Proliferative activity of the anterior pituitary gland in 10 week-old male and female rats under normal conditions was investigated by counting mitotic figures and using single and double immunostaining of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and six pituitary hormones. To determine which proliferative changes depend on the estrous cycle and circadian changes, respectively, six groups of female and two groups of male rats were studied at various times of day. Additionally, BrdU-incorporated cells were further classified by the six types of hormones they contained, or as immunonegative cells. Cell proliferative activity in the females fluctuated drastically with the highest activity in estrus and the lowest in diestrus. In the males, proliferative activity was at a relatively low level, and was similar to that in females in proestrus or early estrus, with the greater activity at night. Identified by their pituitary hormones, the distribution of the proliferating cells was almost the same in each sex, with prolactin (PRL) cells accounting for the highest proportion, followed by growth hormone (GH) cells, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) cells. These percentages agreed well with previously reported levels of cell types among all pituitary cells of the rat. It is therefore suggested that the life span and cycle of rat pituitary cells does not differ among cell types. In another test, male and female rats were given BrdU continuously via an osmotic pump for 8 days to compare cell proliferative activity between sexes, exclusive of the influence of estrous cycle and circadian changes. In this way, we were able to demonstrate that the cumulative incorporation of BrdU in females was consistently twice as high as in males over a constant period of time, and to conclude that cell renewal occurs at a doubled rate in the pituitary of female rat. © Wiley-Lis, Inc.
