Notes: TPA, a tumor promoter whose initial site of action is the cell membrane, was examined for its actions on hamster oral mucosa using light and scanning electron-microscopic procedures. Hamster check-pouch explants were cultured in vitro, then treated for 72 h with 1.6 × 10−8 M TPA. Treated cultures showed a higher mitotic index and more extensive growth than control cultures. Epithelial cells in the control cultures appeared polygonal, with thin, small to medium microvilli. The cells in the treated cultures showed variable shape and surface morphology. Some were interconnected by broad cytoplasmic extensions while others demonstrated long, thin processes that traversed great distances. The unusual surface morphology may be a manifestation of altered phospholipid metabolism that produces a more “fluid” cytoplasmic membrane.

Notes: Summary The cuticle from adultGaigeria pachyscelis was isolated by solubilizing the internal tissues with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at 37°C. Cuticular protein was extracted with guanidine-HCl and β-mercaptoethanol and purified by ammonium sulphate fractionation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of purified protein revealed 2 polypeptides with apparent mol. wts of 58,000 and 74,000. As judged from their hydroxyproline content both of them are collagenous in nature. Results of gel filtration indicate that cuticular collagen exists in two forms, a non-associated form at low concentration and an associated form at high concentration.

Notes: Summary Survival studies on irradiated euoxicE. coli B/r cells in presence of various concentrations of four radioprotecting phenothiazine drugs have been carried out. Maximum radioprotection was obtained at a optimal concentration for each drug and it decreased on either side of it. The DNA strand break studies at the maximum protective and non-protective concentrations of chlorpromazine and promethazine revealed that the number of ssbs in DNA were less at the protective concentration which were efficiently repaired by the type-III repair process. On the other hand, at the non-protective concentrations, inhibition of DNA repair was noticed and a higher number of DNA ssbs were detected. We suggest that the membrane is fluidized to a greater extent at the protective concentrations allowing the chemical restitution of damaged sites by NPSH compounds. At the non-protective high concentrations of the drugs, the membrane may be too grossly disorganised to allow any repair and at the same time high concentrations of the drugs or their radicals may also react with radioprotective intracellular sulphhydryls.

Notes: Summary The available Zn in 25 soils of Sub-Himalayan hill and forest region was determined by using some chemical extractants to evaluate its critical limit in soils and rice plant. The critical limit of soil available Zn using DTPA-CaCl2, DTPA-NH4HCO3, EDTA-NH4OAc and EDTA-(NH4)2CO3 was 0.76, 0.86, 0.85 and 1.18 ppm, respectively. The amount of Zn extracted by these extractants was positively and significantly correlated with per cent dry matter yield. In addition to per cent dry matter yield, the Zn extracted by DTPA-CaCl2, DTPA-NH4 HCO3 and EDTA-(NH4)2CO3 was also positively correlated with Zn concentration in 3rd leaf of rice, Zn concentration in rice shoots, Zn uptake by rice shoots and organic carbon content of the soil, and negatively correlated with soil pH.The 2N MgCl2 and 0.1N HCl extractants were found to be not suitable for these soils. Among the four promising extractants, EDTA-(NH4)2CO3 was most efficient as the value of critical limit determined by it expressed 82.4% predictability in the degree of accuracy against 36.8% with EDTA-NH4OAc. Hence EDTA-NH4OAc is the least efficient extractant for estimation of available Zn in such soils. The critical Zn concentration in 3rd leaf of rice was worked out to be 21.5 ppm below which economic responses to Zn application can be expected.

Notes: Summary Two breeding procedures were compared in two cowpea crosses. Both procedures were started from the same selected F2 plants in each cross. For the early generation yield testing, the F3 lines were yield tested and a pedigree and bulk methods followed in F4 and F5. Each F5 line was bulked to provide seed for a yield test in F6. In the Single Seed Descent (SSD) procedure, a single seed was taken from each F2 plant to produce the F3 generation. The procedure was repeated for the F4 and F5. The F6 SSD lines and the F6 yield testing lines were compared in yield tests. The results showed that differences in yielding ability of F3 lines persisted over generations indicating that selection was effective. This was confirmed by the high significant correlations between F3 yields and those of later generations which ranged from r=0.51* to 0.85**. The grain yields of lines derived by the single seed descent procedure were as good as those derived from early generation yield testing. Significant linear correlation between visual rating of F3 and F6 yields with actual yields revealed that it is possible to identify promising lines of cowpea visually.

Notes: Summary In a pot experiment with 26 calcareous soils, the critical limit of Fe in soils and plants was evaluated. DTPA-extractable Fe was found significanty correlated with Bray's per cent yield in rice. The Fe2+ (iron) in rice and lentil was also found significantly correlated with DTPA-extractable Fe as well as Bray's per cent yield showing thereby the superiority of Fe2+ (iron) in leaves over DTPA-extractable soil Fe to differentiate Fe responsive soils from non-responsive ones. The total Fe content in plant tissues does not seem correlated with the occurrence of Fe deficiency. The threshold values of DTPA-extractable soil Fe and Fe2+ (iron) in rice and lentil leaves were 6.95, 44 and 74.5 ppm, respectively below which appreciable responses to Fe application were observed. The optimum Fe level for these soils was found to be 10 ppm in which the dry matter yield response in all the 19 rice soils and 16 lentil soils ranged from 14.28 to 56.16 (Av. 25.75%) and 13.31 to 53.97 (Av. 22.47%), respectively.

Notes: Abstract Inversion polymorphism has been studied in three natural populations of Drosophila ananassae. The three cosmopolitan inversions have been detected in all the three populations analysed. Some quantitative variations in the inversion frequencies seem to exist and the level of inversion heterozygosity varies between the different populations.

Notes: Abstract Based on the differences in the gene arrangement frequencies average genetic distance has been estimated among natural populations of Drosophila ananassae. Genetic distance obtained by pairwise comparison ranges from 0.002 to 0.371. The most differentiated populations are those from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Although the populations from localities separated by a small geographic distance show less genetic distance, the relation between genetic distance and geographic distance does not seem to be positive.

Notes: Abstract The ever-increasing awareness of the population regarding environmental issues, and especially pollution, is a relatively recent phenomenon. Several authors have considered these relationships within a phenomenological framework. As a preliminary consideration, we have attempted in this study to isolate geographical sectors with variable exposure to air pollution. We have taken readings from seven stations for the period of January 1977 to December 1980; with the help of the difference of means test, we have singled out the significant variants. Based on these findings, we have used the gravity model to determine the strong, average, and weak sectors of exposure to total dust concentration in the air. During the summer of 1980, we submitted a stratified sampling embracing 229 persons, compiled by a telephone questionnaire, with a view to assessing to what extent the population was concerned by pollution in the surrounding air, evaluating public opinion on alternate solutions to resolve this problem, and generally investigating whether the public conscience was sufficiently crystallized to embark upon local environmental protection measures. The Quebec mining town of Thetford Mines, an important centre for asbestos extraction, was used for this investigation. The findings indicate that the population has a generally well-perceived notion of pollution even if water pollution was stressed more than air pollution. However, the perception of air pollution is dependent on distance from the mine and consequently, on exposure sectors to total dust concentration in the air. We assembled, into three groups, some 14 alternate means to attack pollution. The most exposed sector favoured indirect actions, while in other sectors direct measures were accented. Socioeconomic standing and especially education level help explain perceived differences between types of pollution, whereas sex and age are statistically significant for the choice of alternate means. Length of residence has very little influence. Generally, it does not seem that the respondents' opinion are clearly and coherently crystallized. This is understandable if we accept that the respondents appear to dissociate water from air pollution. There therefore exists a lack of apparent agreement between attitudes concerning means and attitudes concerning ends.
