Notes: Abstract This paper reports an examination of dental caries in the primary dentition of 2–5-yr-oId white children in an industrialized South African city, in 1981 and 1983. There was a decrease in dental caries prevalence over the 2-yr period accompanied by an increase in dental treatment in 3–5-yr-olds. Treatment, however, remains low. Socioeconomic status had a varying effect on the trends, but in general there was a greater reduction in dental caries in the lower socioeconomic areas.

Notes: Evacuation of the chamber of the press used to form flaked beef into a restructured meat product (patty) did not affect the binding strength of the cooked patty but under some conditions decreased the cooking loss. In studies using patty mixes containing 0–1.0% added sodium chloride, meat binding strength increased with decrease in the temperature of the mix when formed into patties over the temperature range - 1° to -5°C. The largest effect generally occurred between - 1° and -2°C. However, the effect was only noted in patties that were frozen (-30°C) before being cooked for assessment. With decrease below - 1°C of the temperature of patties when pressed, cooking losses increased for the patties without added salt but decreased for those with added salt (0.5% or 1%). Change in the pressure applied to form the patty (in the range 1.4–13.7 MPa) can affect binding strength.

Notes: The parasite faunas of 12 species of freshwater fish from 17 localities on the island of Jersey were examined. Comparison of the species composition, number, diversity and equitability of the parasite fauna of each species of fish in each locality revealed that community diversity was always low, that most communities were dominated by a single species of parasite, and that community similarity between host species, and often between sites, was generally low. This was not related to unavailability or distribution of potential, invertebrate, intermediate host species, but appeared to be due to chance colonization events. With two exceptions, little exchange of parasites took place between host species, despite vacant niches in the parasite communities and the absence of competitors, and normal parasite specificity was maintained. Comparison of the parasite communities with those on other oceanic islands suggests that they are poorer than would be predicted by island biogeographical theory, and that this is not a very good predictor of parasite community richness on oceanic islands.

Notes: A conventional low copper amalgam was placed in cavities with and without smear layer removol and the amlagam restorations were covered with a resin overlay. The restored teeth were retrieved at 2, 28 and 56 days postoperatively in order to test for leakage and then pulpal reactions. More inflammation was seen in the teeth from which the smear layer had been removed. Abscesses were present in 6 teeth at 28 days but only one was associated with demonstrable bacteria. This study does not support smear layer removal before insertion of low copper amalgam restorations.

Notes: Tiaramide hydrochloride is a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent previously shown to inhibit allergic responses both in vitro and in vivo. Clinical studies in asthmatic adults and children have also shown benefit. We report a double blind cross-over study in 35 adult asthmatic patients comparing oral tiaramide 200 mg four times daily with oral salbutamol 4 mg four times daily and placebo. Symptoms and bronchodilator inhaler usage were recorded in diary cards and morning and evening peak expiratory flow rates were also monitored. Both tiaramide and salbutamol had a significant therapeutic effect compared with placebo. More patients preferred tiaramide than salbutamol and there were fewer side effects during treatment with tiaramide. Tiaramide may be a useful oral therapy in asthma particularly for those patients intolerant of oral beta-adrenergic agonists.

Notes: The aim of this study was to determine the pulpal response to three dilute citric acid smear removers. Forty-eight vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops pygerythrus), in three groups of sixteen animals provided 384 tooth specimens for the histological evaluation of the pulpal response at 3, 31, and 59 days post-operatively. Labial Class V cavities were prepared in the maxillary and mandibular incisor teeth. The pulpal responses elicited by 1% aqueous citric acid, 1% citric acid in 30% ethanol and 0.1% citric acid in 30% ethanol solutions, in unlined cavities and in cavities lined with Dycal after acid application, were compared with those elicited by a negative control material—(Nobetec), and a positive control material—(Syntrex). Using Stanley's criteria the most severe pulpal responses were seen in teeth treated with 1% aqueous citric acid and 1% citric acid in 30% ethanol without a subsequent liner, and by Syntrex at all three time intervals. The use of Dycal as a liner after smear removal markedly reduced the pulpal responses.

Notes: Movement of teeth during denture processing is an unsolved problem. This study investigates the amount of vertical tooth movement during controlled processing of acrylic, using 33° and 0° teeth invested in specific mixes of plaster of Paris or dental stone.Forty sample set-ups each containing four posterior teeth were processed under strictly controlled laboratory conditions. Twenty of these samples carried 33° teeth and the other twenty carried 0° teeth. Each group of twenty samples was randomly divided on a factorial design into batches of ten for investment in plaster of Paris or stone. The vertical movements were measured with a greater degree of accuracy than is required for clinical application. All results were analysed statistically.Significantly greater movement occurred with teeth invested in stone than those invested in plaster of Paris. Whereas, for teeth invested in stone, significantly greater movement occurred with 33° than with 0° teeth, no such effect was found with teeth invested in plaster of Paris.
