Notes: Recently, Abascal and co-workers have developed an extended perturbation theory for diatomic liquids which combines the Weeks–Chandler–Andersen choice of reference potential with the Barker–Henderson choice of hard sphere diameter. Here we report results for the case of atomic liquids. This theory is shown to work well for atomic liquids at moderate densities, for ρ*〈0.75. At higher densities, this theory is less accurate than the first order Barker–Henderson theory. Implications for perturbation theories involving molecular liquids are discussed.

Notes: A new optical technique is described for measurement of absolute distance. The approach is based upon a wavelength multiplexed heterodyne interferometer with FM demodulation. By temporally multiplexing discrete wavelengths in a heterodyne interferometer, a complete elimination of interferometric range ambiguity can be achieved while maintaining the high range sensitivity and resolution of interferometry. The basic theory is presented and an algorithm is described for measurement of range over meter distances with submicrometer resolution. The experimental implementation of the wavelength multiplexed interferometer is described and ranging results with 2 μm resolution from 20 cm are presented. A scanned three-dimensional map of a surface contour with 3-mm topography is also presented.

Notes: Rainbow trout (Salmo irideus), were divided into groups: (1) iced immediately, or (2) kept at 10 °C for 6 hr, (3) 20 °C for 6 hr, (4) 20 °C for 18 hr, (5) 30 °C for 4 hr, (6) 30 °C for 6 hr. Fish in groups 2–6 were iced at the end of the stipulated temperature/time period of holding. Quality was subsequently assessed every 2 days for 14 days during iced storage: sensory assessment using criteria of appearance, texture and odour; chemical assessments by measurement of total volatile bases, hypoxanthine and thiobarbituric acid: microbiological assessments by total bacterial counts at 20 °C/72 hr and 37 °C/48 hr incubation. The results indicate that deamination due to bacterial action and hydrolysis of fats increases progressively with rising temperature prolonged periods of storage prior to icing, and results in final spoilage. Fish iced immediately after delivery and those iced after being kept at 10 °C for 6 hr were acceptable to quality even after 14 days of iced storage. Recommendations are made for maintenance of quality and extension of shelf life.

Notes: The variation of the atomic scattering factor near the X-ray absorption edge of an element can be an important tool for determining the distribution of that element in any sample. For defining experimentally the possibilities of anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS) in metallurgy, three compositions of a phase-separated aluminium-zinc alloy have been studied at different energies below the Zn-absorption edge, using a synchrotron radiation source. In order to test the reliability of these measurements and of the data treatment, the variation of f′, the real part of the scattering factor, has been measured with a precision comparable to that of more direct measurements.

Notes: Summary The problem of two hydrogenlike atomic sites (s-shells only) coupled via a hopping matrix is considered. We employ a new formalism, the Liouville operator resolvent method, to evaluate the single-particle thermodynamic Green’s function for this system. Details of the method are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract A magnetic anomaly chart is presented of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean between 35° and 50° N. This chart is based upon measurements obtained during the period 1956–1984. In this paper a description is given of the data set, of the computer program which was used to obtain grid values from the data points and of the subsequent contouring. As a check on the accuracy and internal consistency of the data set, a cross-over analysis was performed for different parts of the area. A general description of the magnetic anomalies is given against the background of the known structure of the area. A detailed interpretation of the anomalies falls outside the scope of this paper.

Notes: Abstract Dissolved and particulate organic materials were analysed in 14 streamwaters of the McMurdo Sound region of Antarctica. These streams are fed by glacial meltwaters and pass through catchments largely devoid of terrestrial vegetation. Nonetheless they contained measurable amounts of organic material in both dissolved and particulate form. Most of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) values lay in the range 1–3 g C m−3. Higher values were recorded close to penguin rookeries on the coast. Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentrations were generally two orders of magnitude less than DOC and in flowing waters with rich blue-green algal growth DON increased with distance downstream. Dissolved organic phosphorus levels were generally much lower than DON, but highly variable. Particulate organic carbon concentrations (both fine and coarse) were unexpectedly high. Five sources of organic matter were identified: birdlife (only near the coast), autochthonous algal production (especially important for DON), streambed soils (important at first flows), lacustrine and marine sediments, through which certain streams and glaciers cut, and the glacial ice, which received organic input from wind-blown particulates, snowfall and the underlying bedrock of sedimentary origin. Highest organic levels were recorded in the first melt down the glacier face, suggesting that winter deposition of organic materials may be especially important.
