Notes: Abstract Experiments on growth of the marine amphipod Allorchestes compressa Dana were carried out over four weeks, and both growth and reproduction were studied over three generations, each of which was exposed to uranium for approximately 10 wk. At 0.1 mg l-1 the uranium increased growth by 23%, as measured by the mean weight after 4 wk, and at 2 mg l-1 growth was reduced by 28% compared with the control. A. compressa accumulated uranium from sea water with a concentration factor of 10. There was no effect of uranium on the survival of amphipods or their progeny in the multiple-generation experiment, but the numbers of males, the sex ratio, and the respiration rate (measured on males only) at 1mg l-1 were significantly lower than the control. A. compressa is shown to be a convenient species for the study of toxic effects on growth and reproduction using multiple-generation experiments.

Notes: Twelve beef/pork meat blends were made from lean of mature beef and dark or mature pork carcasses. Meat blends containing about 20% beef fat were rated higher for appearance scores by a consumer panel than blends made with 20% pork fat. Visual acceptance of beef/pork patties was accomplished via use of all-beef fat and additionally by extending mature beef (MB) with mature pork (MP) or dark pork lean (DP). Agtron calorimetry scores indicate a minimum of 20% MB lean extended with 60% MP was needed to create the appropriate red color attractive to consumers. Use of 60% MP lean with about 20% beef fat resulted in patties acceptable to consumers for visual appearance and eating satisfaction.

Notes: A case is described where a patient received less oxygen than was set on the Rotameters. The cause was traced to a selective leak of oxygen via an open cyclopropane needle valve. Several recommendations are put forward to prevent a recurrence.

Notes: Simple quantitative descriptive analysis coupled with ratio scaling techniques were used by a consumer panel for the objective assessment of fifteen ports, derived from blending Ruby, Tawny and White ports in varying proportions, for redness, brownness and intensity of colour. Deviation of the amounts of these attributes from those in the consumer's concept of an ideal port, both for Ruby and Tawny drinkers, was determined in relation to blend composition and L*, a* and b* values. Inverse simultaneous regression procedures showed the ports which best satisfied the two consumer subsets (Ruby and Tawny drinkers), in respect to all the sensory attributes, had chroma values of 23.0 and 21.8, and hue angles of 37.3 and 45.1° respectively. This corresponded to L*, a* and b* values of 86.13, 18.24 and 13.9 for the Ruby drinkers, and 92.1,15.3 and 15.4 for the Tawny drinkers.

Notes: In CQ 34 (1984), 457, on Lucan 4.664 indulsit castris, I wrote ‘Housman...explains “...inuitantibus ad desidiam”: read rather ad temeritatem’. Mr S. J. Heyworth has kindly pointed out to me that Housman in his corrected impression (1927) does in fact write temeritatem. I was myself (as was evidently TLL vii. i. 1252. 10ff.) using the first impression (1926), where H. has desidiam. It had not occurred to me that H. would so drastically alter an interpretation in a ‘Second impression (corrected)’.

Notes: Abstract A new method for calculating the angle of correction in upper tibial osteotomies is described. The wedge differs from the current techniques in being oblique. The apex is sited on the medial cortex to lie level with the tibial tubercle. The wedge is coned downwards at an angle of 45 degrees, based laterally. This keeps clear of the bifurcation of the popliteal artery, whilst still being contained in the cancellous zone. The method of accurately determining the angle of the wedge and the width of the base using logarithmic calculations is outlined. Being oblique, on removal of the wedge, the cut surfaces match as they meet. Two screws are inserted to lie at right angles to the plane of osteotomy. A long leg plaster cast is worn for six weeks. Thereafter a cast brace is substituted to permit knee and ankle movements. The osteotomy unites rapidly across the large oblique contact surfaces. Pain relief has been substantial and lasting in every patient. The range of flexion returned to the level elicited under anaesthesia immediately prior to the operation.
