Notes: Abstract. Boreholes have been constructed at eight sites on the Permo-Triassic Sandstone and Chalk aquifers to assess the extent of chemical and microbiological contamination emanating from unlined farm manure stores. Slurry along fracture faces in the Chalk was found on cores taken from beneath two stores. Porewaters from the Chalk sites and one of the Sandstone sites were discoloured and showed high concentrations of nitrate, ammonium and organic carbon to depths in excess of 10 m. Although Cryptosporidia and Escherichia coli O157 were found in many of the cattle slurry lagoons, neither were found in the aquifer material beneath. The self-sealing of unlined slurry stores is seen as a crucial step in minimizing leakage. A simple mass balance shows farm boreholes near to contaminant sources are at greater risk than public supply wells. Contaminant modelling shows discontinuing use of an unlined farm manure store will lead to little difference in solute concentrations over the short to medium term. Groundwater is most at risk where the water table is shallow since direct hydraulic connection between the lagoon base and the water table considerably increases the rate of vertical migration. This is of greatest significance for pathogens that are thought to be relatively short lived in the subsurface. Under the majority of situations minimal threat is posed to potable groundwater drinking supplies.

Notes: A new quantitative method for characterizing quartz grain shape is presented. The method employs a harmonic analysis based upon Fourier descriptors which is a distinct variation of the traditional and widely used Fourier series. Quartz grain images from a scanning electron microscope were ‘frame grabbed’and converted to a digitized grey-level image. The image processing techniques of enhancement, segmentation and boundary tracking were applied to remove all features except the image boundary. This boundary was sampled at uniform intervals of are length and represented mathematically on the complex plane. In this way problems associated with the location of particle centroid and re-entrant values were avoided. The resulting data was standardized relative to scale, rotation and starting position. Hence the discrete Fourier transform was applied using modern fast Fourier transform techniques and the modulus of the resulting harmonic amplitude used to characterize the grain shape. The technique was applied to a sample of 0–5-m quartz grains from three distinct populations: desert quartz, beach grains (Fire Island, New York) and Brazilian crushed quartz. Whilst plots of average amplitude vs. harmonic number for each population appeared similar, discriminant analysis applied to each grain sample distinguished characteristic grain shape with an excellent degree of success. The problems of location of the centroid and re-entrant values were eliminated. This allowed the technique to be applied to a much wider group of irregularly shaped sedimentary particles such as loess.

Notes: Balancing the sediment budget of the Atlantic shoreline of Long Island has proved to be problematic because more sediment has been found to be moving westward in littoral drift than was estimated to be supplied by wave erosion of the Ronkonkoma terminal moraine at Montauk Point. There is a need for the existence of an additional, possibly offshore source. As part of a larger Atlantic shore study, 11 beach samples from Fire Island were compared with samples representing the known glacial source at Montauk Point, and also with four offshore samples to the south. Comparisons were based upon quartz sand grain surface texture patterns derived by scanning electron microscope checklist analysis. Initial evidence of an offshore-onshore link was provided by qualitative results examining surface texture variability between samples, illustrated by photographic evidence and written notes. This evidence was confirmed consistently during quantitative analysis. In particular, canonical variate analysis grouped two offshore samples representing deposits of buried glacial to fluvioglacial lobes with beach samples from Fire Island in adjacent onshore locations or slightly downdrift. In addition, canonical variate analysis and factor analysis using the spssx package, together with cluster analysis using the ARTHUR package, depicted the main factors and texture variables largely responsible for sample discrimination. The significance of both the offshore-onshore link and the associated factors influencing quartz grain surface texture was revealed by the fact that they are strongly related to each other and to the regional geomorphology.

Notes: Abstract A new method for calculating the angle of correction in upper tibial osteotomies is described. The wedge differs from the current techniques in being oblique. The apex is sited on the medial cortex to lie level with the tibial tubercle. The wedge is coned downwards at an angle of 45 degrees, based laterally. This keeps clear of the bifurcation of the popliteal artery, whilst still being contained in the cancellous zone. The method of accurately determining the angle of the wedge and the width of the base using logarithmic calculations is outlined. Being oblique, on removal of the wedge, the cut surfaces match as they meet. Two screws are inserted to lie at right angles to the plane of osteotomy. A long leg plaster cast is worn for six weeks. Thereafter a cast brace is substituted to permit knee and ankle movements. The osteotomy unites rapidly across the large oblique contact surfaces. Pain relief has been substantial and lasting in every patient. The range of flexion returned to the level elicited under anaesthesia immediately prior to the operation.

Notes: Abstract A study of the occurrence of the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the biological indicator organisms F. vesiculosus and P. vulgata in the Glamorgan Heritage Coastal area, South Wales shows that although there is some contamination, there are no grossly high levels. Although there appear to be localized inputs of Cu and Pb at certain sites, the results correspond well with the overall pattern of pollution in the Severn Estuary. It is suggested that coastal sites may be ranked according to degree of contamination by means of a graphical method based upon heavy metal levels in P. vulgata. A comparison of the two biological species shows that P. vulgata appears to be the more sensitive indicator of heavy metal pollution.

Notes: Abstract Aspects of litter movement were looked at in a variety of ways. River bank clearances provided valuable information on litter accumulation and movement, showing a distinctive correlation between flood events and litter movement. Introduction of litter outside of channel deposition (diffuse sources) were limited in the study area in South Wales, UK. A rise in litter deposition occurred for some time after flood events, with the main accumulation occurring in the mid-bank zone. As only some litter types have an increased input during flood events e.g. sewage-derived material from combined sewer outfalls (CSO), accumulation of other litter types, e.g. plastic sheeting could be due to their distribution throughout the catchment. A positive correlation between litter stranding and vegetation was found. During high flows, (75.59 cumecs) litter is removed from sites with little restraining vegetation and deposited where stranding potential is high. Smaller items such as feminine hygiene products were more susceptible to stranding than larger plastic sheeting.

Notes: Abstract Riverine litter occupies a spatial and temporal position in any systematic analysis of river systems and is a problem that is increasing in scale. Quantifiable source factors of litter in the river Taff, South Wales, UK, system were found to be mainly two – sewage inputs through combined sewer overflows (CSO) and fly tipping. The greatest inputs of sewage derived solids were introduced to the river by malfunctioning CSO, the most numerous single component being sanitary towels. Whilst sewage-derived material constituted approximately 23% of all items on the river Taff, large quantities of waste, especially plastic sheeting, originated from fly tipping sites.
