    Notizen: Summary. Thirty patients, thought clinically to have ovarian tumours, were studied prospectively by pre-operative computed tomographic (CT) scans of the abdomen and pelvis. In six patients (20%) small metastases in mesentery, omentum and on subdiaphragmatic peritoneum were not detected by the scans. CT did not improve the accuracy of staging or assist the surgeons by drawing their attention to disease which they might otherwise have missed. Although CT gives an elegant demonstration of anatomy, it is not an alternative to extended laparotomy in patients with ovarian tumours.

    Notizen: The known properties of plasma dispersion functions (PDF's) for waves in weakly relativistic, magnetized, thermal plasmas are reviewed and a large number of new results are presented. The PDF's required for the description of waves with small wave number perpendicular to the magnetic field (Dnestrovskii and Shkarofsky functions) are considered in detail; these functions also arise in certain quantum electrodynamical calculations involving strongly magnetized plasmas. Series, asymptotic series, recursion relations, integral forms, derivatives, differential equations, and approximations for these functions are discussed as are their analytic properties and connections with standard transcendental functions. In addition a more general class of PDF's relevant to waves of arbitrary perpendicular wave number is introduced and a range of properties of these functions are derived.

    Notizen: The purpose of this study was to develop standardized reproducible testing methods for evaluating physical properties of periodontal dressing materials. Three commercial compositions (Coe-Pak, Coe-Pak Hard & Fast Set and WondrPak) were studied.Working and setting times were determined by observing the continuous changes in viscosity via the oscillating rheometer. The 24-h and 1-week tensile and shear adhesive bonds to enamel were studied by luting orthodontic lingual cleats with a standard film thickness to the orientated labial surfaces of extracted incisors and pulling them to failure. Dimensional change was studied over a period of 24h using a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT).The developed testing modalities have greater precision than those previously reported. The concept of ‘bench time’ was developed during which certain materials cannot be handled immediately after mixing.

    Notizen: In the period January 1980 to February 1984, 91 heart transplant operations were performed at Harefield Hospital. The current statistics of the transplantation programme are presented. The survival rate since the introduction of the immunosuppressive agent Cyclosporin A is 78% at one year. This paper summarises the special care required for these patients with particular reference to the anaesthetic management.

    Notizen: Fifteen patients had lumbar sympathetic block using needle localisation by computerised tomography. The technique has the advantage that the needle route to the sympathetic plexus can be accurately planned, avoiding damage to other organs. In this study, 13 patients out of 15 had significant benefit, from the procedure.

    Notizen: Abstract Effective diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease requires accurate evaluation of disease status before and after treatment. This study evaluated relationships among multiple parameters that have been used for periodontal disease evaluation. A total of 61 initially deep (≥6 mm) interproximal pockets from 16 patients examined before and after a 3-week course of root planing therapy were evaluated for probing depth, bleeding on probing, darkfield and cultural characterization of subgingival plaque, and histometric indices of infiltrated connective tissue (ICT) and mature plasma cell infiltrate. 36 sites were evaluated before treatment, and 25 after treatment. A comparison of mean scores for pre-treatment sites versus post-treatment sites indicated that there was an average improvement in most disease-related parameters. However, patterns of significant correlations among the parameters differed markedly. Motile bacteria enumerated by darkfield microscopy were significantly correlated with ICT and plasma-cell populations before, but not after treatment. In contrast, probing depth and populations of black pigmented Bacteroides (BPB's). principally B. gingivalis, were significantly correlated with ICT after, but not before, treatment. Bleeding on probing was not significantly correlated with ICT levels before or after treatment. This suggests that different sets of parameters should be used for evaluating periodontal disease status before or after treatment. Our data further suggest that B. gingivalis populations may be related to delayed healing of deep periodontal lesions after instrumentation.

    Notizen: Biosynthetically labelled Qa-2 antigens were isolated from mouse spleen cells by immunoprecipitation with anti-Qa-2 antisera. When newly synthesized Qa-2 molecules from several different inbred strains were analysed by two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis; four different phenotypes were observed that differed in the number of polypeptides present. The ability to distinguish Qa-2+ phenotypes was used to map the recombination points in two congenic strains, B6. Tlaa and A. Tlab. No alternative Qa-2-like polypeptides were detected in B6.K1 (Qa-2−) cells using a polyspecific rabbit antiserum against mouse class I antigens, but a new molecule was detected in BALB/cBy (Qa-2−) cells. Pulse-chase and surface-labelling experiments showed that some, but not all, of the newly synthesized Qa-2 precursor forms are processed to mature cell surface molecules.
