    Notes: The generation and annealing of fixed positive and fixed negative charges are discussed in the context of neutral hole and neutral electron traps. The analyses are based on the results of experimental studies involving hydrogen ambient atmosphere annealing and/or electron injection of gate insulators in insulated gate field-effect transistors which have been damaged by 1.5-keV x rays. It is found, for example, that annihilation of fixed positive charge either by hydrogen annealing, or by electron injection results in indistinguishable "repair'' of this defect, indicating that such repair probably involves loss of an electron by the hydrogen to an E'γ center. It is postulated that a new electron spin resonance (ESR) center representing fixed negative charge, Nn, which is derived from a large cross-section neutral electron trap might be detected under the proper conditions. Since large cross-section neutral traps (10−15 cm2) are known to exist in significant concentrations in insulators damaged with ionizing radiation, but have not been correlated to any structural defect detected using ESR, it would appear that they are not paramagnetic.

    Notes: Y1.8Er0.2Fe14B is an interesting system in that the tendency of the Er ions to order in the basal plane is almost exactly canceled at low temperatures by the uniaxial anisotropy of the iron sublattice.1 We have performed torque magnetometry measurements in all three principal planes of a single crystal of this material at temperatures from 4 to 300 K in magnetic fields up to 60 kG, which is adequate to produce near saturation even in directions away from the principal axes, thus allowing us to determine the magnetocrystalline anisotropy free energy as a function of orientation and temperature. The free energy data were compared with calculations using the full set of crystal field parameters allowed by symmetry.

    Notes: A modified version of the atomic force microscope is introduced that enables a precise measurement of the force between a tip and a sample over a tip-sample distance range of 30–150 A(ring). As an application, the force signal is used to maintain the tip-sample spacing constant, so that profiling can be achieved with a spatial resolution of 50 A(ring). A second scheme allows the simultaneous measurement of force and surface profile; this scheme has been used to obtain material-dependent information from surfaces of electronic materials.

    Notes: Abstract. The eggs of 30 female chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawvtscha (Walbaum), were collected at spawning. Some eggs from each fish were collected for bacteriologic study. Two salmon produced eggs judged to be of poor quality which were not used. The remaining 28 of the 30 groups of eggs were fertilized from a single sperm pool and the eggs incubated in separate groups. Mortality data on the developing salmon were recorded regularly through the twelfth week on feed. Unfertilized eggs from each group were surface-disinfected with an iodine solution, then crushed and subjected to a culture procedure designed to permit growth of as many bacterial types as possible. Bacteria were cultured and identified, and a comparison made of the types of organisms present in eggs from groups which later incurred high or low mortalities. Bacteria were recovered from both groups of salmon eggs. Although no single organism could be identified as a cause of increased mortality, the more frequent occurrence in the eggs of the ‘high mortality’ group of species of Vibrio, Listeria, Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus suggests that these bacteria may play a role. It is suggested that the cause of so-called early lifestage disease of salmon is multifactorial.

    Notes: Summary Uteroglobin, a secretory protein of rabbit uterine epithelium, was localized by the direct immunoperoxidase method in control and hCG-induced pseudopregnant rabbits. In control rabbits, uteroglobin was confined to the apical cytoplasm of nearly all cells of the endometrial epithelium. The induction of pseudopregnancy resulted in a pronounced continuing increase, through 4 days post-hCG administration, in the absolute number of epithelial cells engaged in uteroglobin synthesis. Furthermore, the endoplasmic reticulum was more intensely stained for uteroglobin than in the epithelial cells of control rabbit endometrium. Thus, the increased production of uteroglobin, in response to hormonal stimulation, appears to be achieved both through an increase in the amount of uteroglobin synthesized by a given cell as well as by an increase in the number of cells involved in uteroglobin synthesis. Concurrent with the increase in the number of cells synthesizing uteroglobin, an increase in the number of unstained cells first appeared at the second day of pseudopregnancy, during the period of maximal epithelial proliferation. However, within those cells containing uteroglobin on the second day following injection with hCG, most staining was limited to the perinuclear membrane. At various times following hCG administration, a number of scattered cells, intensely stained for uteroglobin, were observed in the uterine epithelium. Based upon ultrastructural studies, failure to exclude trypan blue, and the presence of intra-mitochondrial uteroglobin, they were identified as cither dead or dying cells.

    Notes: Abstract Angiodysplasia of the colon was diagnosed in 31 out of 1,050 patients (3%) presenting with rectal bleeding or anaemia, among 10,000 colonoscoped at St. Mark's Hospital. The lesions were identified in 16 out of 879 (2%) patients with rectal bleeding, in 15 out of 171 (9%) patients with anaemia, and in a further three patients without features of blood loss. The angiodysplasia lesions were predominantly in the right colon (76%) and occurred with a similar frequency (12%) in the transverse and the left colon. Affected patients (59% male and 41% female) were in the older age group (53–89 years; mean age 69.5 years) but only one patient had known aortic valve disease. Angiodysplasia is an important diagnosis to consider in patients presenting with colonic bleeding or anaemia because it can be treated in the majority of cases by endoscopic electrocoagulation. However in our experience it is less common (3%) than previously suggested by other authors (40–67%). Endoscopic over-diagnosis is possible when intramucosal capillaries with no bleeding tendency on local traumatisation or biopsy are included in the diagnosis but these lesions are not true angiodysplasia.

    Notes: Abstract A spatial six degrees of freedom mechanism has been developed in order to measure instantaneous relative spatial position and motion of two rigid bodies. Angular displacements of all joints of the mechanism were measured by a set of precise potentiometers and digitized as a function of time. Conversion to linear Cartesian and angular coordinates involved a computer algorithm based on the direct kinematics approach. Calibration was carried out for the assembled mechanism in a given workspace. Joint angles were calculated for a number of defined positions of the mechanism using the inverse-kinematics computer algorithm. Calculated angles were then compared with the corresponding sensor readings and the characteristic of each joint sensor was determined individually by the least-squares-fit method. Differentiation of the obtained position trajectories was performed to find linear and angular velocities as well as accelerations. Digital filtering was applied to eliminate the noise caused by the data-acquisition system as well as by the digital differentiation procedure. The device has been applied to measure the relative position of the violin bow with respect to the violin itself. This enabled bowing-mechanics and bowing-skills analysis. An example of data obtained is presented.
