Notes: A panel discussion between representatives of four major government funding agencies (Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and Office of Naval Research) and the magnetism research community was held concerning the role of government research funding in the field of magnetism. The program consisted of presentations by each of the four agency representatives and a response by a representative of the university research community. The floor was then opened for comments and questions by the audience. This article summarizes both the prepared presentations and the response of the audience.

Notes: Summary Serum factors may be responsible for reduced host-anti-tumor defence. Although there is still confusion about their origin, attempts have been made to immobilize serum components by Protein A columns as a therapeutic modality. In our study the in vitro adsorption of 90% of the IgG from cancer sera on “immobilized protein A” did not influence the inhibitory serum activity as measured in a mixed lymphocyte culture. Therefore, IgG or immune complexes do not seem to be the suppressive serum factor in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma. There is evidence for leakage of small amounts of protein A from the columns which have immunostimulatory activity. Perhaps this may explain necrosis after a therapeutic immunoadsorption.

Notes: Recent investigations on aperiodic waves, which are generated by time-harmonic forces in waveguides, indicate a close relationship between resonances and certain time-harmonic solutions of homogeneous boundary value problems for the wave equation (“standing waves”). This paper is motivated by the observation that, in all known cases, standing waves are connected with resonances if and only if they are subject to suitable asymptotic restrictions as |x| → ∞. These asymptotic properties are used to introduce a class of “admissible” standing waves. We prove that admissible standing waves do not exist in a certain class of local perturbations Ω of the n-dimensional domain Ω0 bounded by the hyperplanes xn = 0 and xn = π. This extends a result of M. Faulhaber on the absence of eigenvalues. As we shall show in a subsequent paper, absence of admissible standing waves implies absence of resonances.

Notes: We consider boundary value problems for the Helmholtz equation in domains with boundaries coinciding with a plane outside a sufficiently large sphere. As opposed to the method of Gartmeier [6] (see also [12]) our analysis leads to an integral equation of the second kind with a compact operator. In the last chapter we study the set of far field patterns which are generated by entire incident fields.
