    Notes: Kinetics of liquid water sorption by soybean (Glycine max) and pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) seeds was studied at several temperatures. The data could be accurately correlated in terms of an empirical model involving a single rate constant. The temperature dependence of the rate constant followed Arrhenius relation. Swelling of grains due to water sorption was slightly less than the volume of water imbibed. This loss related to the energy of activation of the water sorption process.

    Notes: The management of public affairs in northeast India has been in focus in the regional, national and world press in recent years. Much of the attention has been confined to insurgency, the ‘foreign nationals’ issue, tribal ‘uprisings’, ‘brutalities’ committed by the security forces, ‘involvement’ of foreign agencies in the area, political ‘horse-trading’ and floods. There has been no analysis of the economic, cultural and demographic factors which have acquired different nuances in the wake of the rapid modernization taking place in the region since the 1950s and which have a decisive say on the formulation of policies and the efficacy of institutions of governance in northeast India. This paper proposes to offer some facts and reflections on these aspects.

    Notes: Abstract Mating propensity and fertility were studied in five laboratory strains of Drosophila ananassae which were established from single females collected from different geographical localities. The results show statistically significant variation among different isofemale lines with respect to mating propensity and fertility. The strains showing greater sexual activity produce more progeny. Thus, there is a positive correlation between mating activity and fertility in D. ananassae. The comparison of mating frequencies of strains and their hybrids reveals the existence of heterosis and reciprocal effects. The data suggest that the males are more subject to intrasexual selection.

    Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of the retarding action of phenol on the V5+-thiourea initiated polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) have been studied within the temperature range of 30-50°C. The effects of retarder (phenol), metal ion (V5+), monomer (MA), sulfuric acid, some organic solvents and inorganic salts on the percentage and rate of polymerization have been studied. The remarkable observation of the present study is the positive intercept obtained from the plot of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. This type of observation is significantly different from previous studies on retarded polymerization. The values of composite rate constants k0kt/kikpkK have been calculated from plots of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. On the basis of experimental findings a reaction mechanism has been suggested, and a suitable rate expression has been proposed and explained.

    Notes: Abstract Six new mixed ligand complexes of iron phthalimide with gallic acid, pyridoxine, sulphosalicylic acid, salicylaldehyde, anisaldehyde, and naphthaldehyde have been prepared and characterised on the basis of conductance, magnetic susceptibility, IR, electronic and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra exhibit a broad and asymmetric doublet which persists down to 50 K. The I. S. and Q. S. values indicate iron to be in +3 and high spin state. The magnetic moment values (∼5.0 BM at 300 K decreasing to ∼ 3.0 BM at 77 K) do not show any magnetic transition.

    Notes: Abstract Mercury adsorbed from HgCl2 and 2-methoxy-ethylmercury chloride (Aretan) solutions by three contrasting soils showed a dependence on soil: solution ratio and initial Hg concentration in soil solution. Changing the soil solution ratio from 1: 10 to 1 : 100 but keeping the initial concentration constant resulted in an increase in Hg adsorption from both Hg compounds. A similar change in soil: solution ratio accompanied by a decrease in initial concentration, on the other hand, resulted in decrease in Hg adsorption. Upon manipulating of the pH of the surface soils, adsorption of HgCl2 at 100 mg Hg L−1 concentration increased from about 701 :o over 95 mg Hg kg−1 when pH was raised from 5.0 to 8.0. Precipitation of Hg may also have contributed to this trend. Aretan adsorption by these soils, on the other hand, changed little with change in pH. Removal of organic matter from soil resulted in large reductions of Hg adsorbed, as much as 95 % from the HgCl2 solutions, but only up to 31 % from Aretan solutions. This suggests that organic matter in soil played a mayor role in the adsorption of inorganic Hg whereas the soils' mineral fractions were involved more in the adsorption of the organic Hg compound.

    Notes: Abstract Isotherms for sorption of 2-methoxyethylmercury chloride (Aretan) and HgCl2 showed that all three soils investigated had a large capacity to adsorb these Hg compounds, the order being Morogoro 〉 Arusha 〉 Dar es Salaam. For all soils, surface horizons adsorbed more Hg at any given concentration of Hg in solution as compared to subsurface horizons. Adsorption isotherms of Aretan, especially at lower equilibrium concentration in soil solution, were much steeper in all horizons and in all profiles. The Freundlich equation described the adsorption of HgCl2 better than that of Aretan. The adsorption isotherms for Aretan and HgCl2 showed different forms, implying probably that different adsorption mechanisms were involved.
