Notes: A wide bandwidth (8 GHz) and a high gain-bandwidth product (70 GHz) have been achieved with InP/InGaAsP/InGaAs avalanche photodiodes (APD's) grown by chemical beam epitaxy. These APD's also exhibit low dark current (〈150 nA at 90% breakdown), good external quantum efficiency (〉90% at λ=1.3 μm), and high avalanche gain (M0(approximately-equal-to)40).

Notes: A sample consisting of 1135 edentulous patients with clinically healthy denture bearing areas, was examined radiologically. It appears that the diagnostic yield is high whereas the expected radiation induced risk is low. Patients should therefore be examined radiologically prior to full denture construction.

Notes: Quackgrass [Elymus repens (L.) Gould =Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.] and barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.] were more than one hundred times more susceptible to sethoxydim than alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. 'Saranac') or navybean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Seafarer'). Uptake of sethoxydim From soil following post-emergence applications caused negligible reduction in E. crus-galli fresh weight. More than 80% of foliar-applied 14C-sethoxydim was absorbed within 6 h in all species. Translocation occurred in all species with accumulation of 14C in rapidly growing plant tissues. Translocation to the roots was less than 8% of total in all species. Most of the extracted 14C initially partitioned into an ethyl acetate-soluble fraction. The proportion of 14C in the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction decreased with time with a concomitant increase of that in the insoluble fraction. Differences in the quantity of 14C in the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction did not account for the observed selectivity.

Notes: Abstract The cause- or causes-of the excitation of the Chandler wobble is one of the most intriguing problems in geophysics. As a result of one of the most valuable examples of an international programme, the positions of the pole have been determined since the late 19th century with remarkable accuracy. These data have always been accepted as of great importance in the study of the atmosphere, oceans and solid Earth. Recently, new techniques have greatly improved the accuracy with which the polar motion can be determined. Interpretation of the older data was made much more difficult because of their errors-for example the interesting suggestion that earthquakes were a cause of the excitation (by D. E. Smylie and L. Manshinha) could not be tested because their effects, if any, were lost in the noise. With the great improvement in the data it is now possible to suppose that comparable advances will be made in the theoretical interpretation. A discussion meeting at the Royal Astronomical Society on 8 May, 1987 on this topic was held and the following gives a short survey of this topic, consisting of brief summaries given by the speakers. This review is therefore a collective one which it is hoped will make more widely known these great technical advances and to fundamental interest of the phenomena of thepolar motion.

Notes: A kinetic model for chemical events occurring within the high pressure electron capture mass spectrometer (HPECMS) ion source is developed which includes four different pathways by which unconventional negative ions can be produced. These routes to unusual ions include reactions of gas phase free radicals, surface-assisted reactions, ion-electron and ion-ion recombination reactions, and ion-wall neutralization. The model developed here provides a diagnostic tool useful for the elucidation of unusual HPEC spectra. Such spectra for two environmentally important classes of compounds are explained by use of the model. These compound classes include the trifluoroacetic derivatives of polycyclic aromatic amines, which have been shown to be present in materials derived from liquified coal, and the derivatives of hexachlorocyclopentadiene, which are used as pesticides. It is shown in this study that several processes, in addition to electron capture, can be operative in the typical HPECMS ion source, and that these processes can be used advantageously for the generation of informative and sensitive mass spectral signals.

Notes: Spectra have been recorded from monochromatized Kα1, Kβ1 and Lα1 X-rays in the 3 - 16 keV energy region incident on an Si(Li) detector. An analytic lineshape consisting of a Gaussian plus two Gaussian-exponential convolutes fits these well, except at very low energy. The intensities and parameters of these tails are explored in the context of the processes responsible, and the behaviour of the shorter tail is compared with the predictions of a model calculation of Auger and photoelectron escape. The well behaved energy dependence of the tailing parameters improves the prospects for more accurate fitting of complex XRF, EPMA and PIXE spectra.
