Notes: The electric, dielectric permittivity, loss tangent, microwave power absorption, and hysteresis loop parameters were studied on a series of cobalt-substituted lithium titanium ferrites. The experimental results indicate that cobalt substitution affect all these parameters. The observed dispersion in conductivity and dielectric permittivity with frequency and temperature are in accordance with Maxwell–Wagner model while the microwave and hysteresis loop properties can be interpreted with the help of Dionne's exchange isolation model.

Notes: The analysis of experimental data of magnetomicrowave Kerr effect in MgMn ferrite samples at 9.442 GHz has been carried out using external permeability tensor components which take care of demagnetizing fields more accurately in the theory and is based on the guided wave propagation of the microwave inside the sample. The present analysis gives a better agreement with the experimental data in comparison to our earlier analysis which was based on the free-wave propagation of the microwave. The importance of the image effect in the demagnetizing factor is also discussed.

Notes: Uterine activity in spontaneous normal labour was studied in Singaporean Malay women at term with a singleton vertex presentation. Nulliparae had significantly higher uterine activity compared with their multiparous counterparts. Uterine activity in the Malay population was compared with that of a similar Chinese population. When controlled for parity, maternal height and birthweight of babies, there was no difference in uterine activity between the two groups.

Notes: Abstract The preparation of polyphenylene oxide polymer films has been extended to the anthraquinone series. Potentiostatic and cycled potential procedures have been utilized in the anodic polymerization of several hydroxy-substituted anthraquinones producing surface modified electrodes incorporating the quinone moiety. The electrochemical response of such electrodes was investigated in aqueous media and the stability of the films was evaluated under moderately harsh testing conditions, simulating the environment of a lead-acid battery electrolyte.

Notes: Summary Field experiments were conducted to assess the effects of the application of P on growth and N yield of inoculated and indigenous blue-green algae (BGA). Addition of 17.4 kg P ha−1 in split applications led to the highest BGA biomass and N yield, 162 kg dry weight ha−1 and 6 kg N ha−1 per 15 days, respectively. When inoculum of Aulosira spp., Aphanothece spp., Gloeotrichia spp. were compared separately, Gloeotrichia spp. grew faster but Aulosira spp. fixed more N. The growth rate and N yield of Aulosira spp. decreased with high P applications, although growth continued until the application of 34.8 kg P ha−1. The effects of P on inoculum production by local species compared with those collected from other states showed the superiority of the local culture. Applications of P also enhanced the growth and N yield of indigenous BGA, with Wollea spp. showing the best results.

Notes: Summary Fluctuating flow of a viscous fluid rotating over a disk whose angular velocity oscillates about a nonzero mean is investigated. Initially the disk and the fluid rotate in the same sense with different angular velocities Ω 1 and Ω 2 (Ω 2〉Ω 1) and at a particular instant of time, the angular velocity of the disk becomes Ω 1[1+ε sin( $$\bar \omega \bar t$$ )]. The problem is solved as an initial boundary value problem and it is found that for small values of ε the results of analytical and numerical methods are in excellent agreement. The effect of frequency parameter on surface skin frictions has been analysed for various values of angular velocity ratio s and amplitude parameter ε.
