    Notes: In this paper we further explore the applicability of a vibrational T2 process based on the extended-exponential modulation model [Rothschild, Perrot, and Guillaume, J. Chem. Phys. 87, 7293 (1987)] to Raman correlation data of concentrated aqueous solutions of LiSCN and KSCN [Kato¯, Mol. Phys. 48, 1119 (1983); Kato¯ and Takenaka, Mol. Phys. 46, 257 (1982)]. In general, the values of dispersion parameter α in the modulation function exp[−(t/τ)α], obtained from the fit of the theory to the isotropic correlation data of the CN oscillator, predict the prevalence of interrelated, collective dynamic processes in the medium that are the cause of the instantaneous oscillator transition frequency shifts (motional narrowing). In particular we predict, from the observed concentration dependence of α, strong short-time (fraction to several ps) cation–water–anion interactions that, in the more concentrated LiSCN–H2O systems at 303 K, are above a site percolation threshold with a value of α∼0.3 (close to that found in glasses). The expectation value of t, 〈t〉=τΓ(1+1/α), becomes critical near a concentration of 5 mol/l and shows a pronounced Vogel–Fulcher-type temperature dependence (T0=250 K) in the 10 mol/l LiSCN–H2O system over a range 0.45–76 ps. However, since α approaches its limiting value=1 at the highest temperature reported (353 K), the large-cluster cation–water–anion distributions in LiSCN–H2O must be rather tenuous. In contrast, the characteristics of α and of 〈t〉 for the KSCN–H2O systems agree with the relatively weak cation–water forces; the (inverse) concentration dependence of α is linear, its temperature dependence is flat, and the Vogel–Fulcher-type temperature behavior of 〈t〉 for the 10 mol/l solution stretches merely from 0.7 to 1.4 ps.

    Notes: Abstract Studies of coexistence are based ultimately on the assumption that competitive exclusion is a general and accredited phenomenon in nature. However, the ecological and evolutionary impact of interspecific competition is of questionable significance. Review of three reputed examples of competitive exclusion in the field (Aphytis wasps, red and grey squirrels, and triclads) demonstrates that the widely-accepted competition-based interpretations are unlikely, that alternative explanations are overlooked, and that all other reported cases need critical reinvestigation. Although interspecific competition does undoubtedly occur, the evidence suggests it is usually too weak and intermittent a force to achieve competitive exclusion or any other ecologically-significant result, except perhaps rarely and on a minor scale. Coexistence and community structure are therefore not ecological conditions to be especially accounted for, especially since their inherently comparative methods generate information that is largely superficial. Alternative questions that relate directly to species, the units of diversity, are discussed and they emphasize the primary habitat requirements of species, which are fixed during speciation. Neither the comparative approach of coexistence studies, nor the investigation of pattern is likely to be profitable, since the acquisition of species-specific characteristics during speciation requires historical research. At least one alternative theory of ecology, based on the close adaptation of organisms to the environment, is available.

    Notes: Abstract L-acetylcarnitine is a compound with cholinergic properties and putative action on the visual system and the glucose metabolism. Ten healthy, emmertropic volunteers (age range: 21 to 28 years) were studied. Each subject was administered 5, 10, and 30 mg/kg acute intravenous doses of L-acetylcarnitine and matching placebo. Retinal oscillatory potentials to full-field flash stimulation were recorded before and 30, 60, and 120 min after administration. A systematic reduction of the implicit time of the P2 and N2 oscillatory potential components was observed after administration of the 10 and 30 mg/kg doses: significant changes were not evident at the 5 mg dose or after placebo. The latency reduction was significantly correlated with the postdrug increment of the L-acetylcarnitine plasma concentration. No other systematic modification in latency of amplitude was observed.

    Notes: Abstract A new experimental method, involving the sorting of linguistic contexts, is shown to be effective in discriminating the contexts of polysemous words as well as the contexts of synonyms of those words. These results are interpreted as support for the claim that the method of sorting linguistic contexts is a valid technique for studying the contextual information available to support inferences about word meanings.
