Notes: Summary We studied the effective site of an inhaled aerosol of procaterol, a β2-selective adrenergic bronchodilator, in 8 asthmatic patients whose basal lung functions are almost within the normal range in both slow vital capacity (VC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1.0), and are free from asthmatic attack. In patients who had received procaterol 30 min after inhalation of aerosol, there was no significant change in VC, although FEV1.0, maximal expiratory flow at 50% VC $$(\dot V_{50} )$$ , maximal expiratory flow at 25% VC $$(\dot V_{25} )$$ and maximal expiratory flow at 30% VC of partial maximal expiratory flow volume curve $$(\dot V_{30p} )$$ improved significantly. On the other hand, in those who had received placebo, none of the parameters changed. Furthermore, Rl decreased and C0.5 increased significantly during the first 5 min after inhalation of procaterol aerosol. After an interval of 5 min, Rl did not change any further, while C0.5 continued to improve until 30 min after inhalation of procaterol. These results suggest that procaterol may first dilate the large airway and then may gradually dilate the small airway in bronchial asthma.

Notes: [Auszug] Between early September and late December 1987, the intensity of the hard component of the X-ray emission from SN1987A was constant within statistical errors, whereas that of the soft X-rays fluctuated by a factor of about two on a timescale of a month. In January 1988 the intensity increased ...

    Notes: [Auszug] GX1 +4 (4U1728 -24) is a luminous binary X-ray pulsar near the Galactic centre13, with a ~2 min (or possibly twice this) pulse period and probably a 〉 100-day binary period7'13. From its discovery in the early 1970s until 1980, it was spinning up rapidly, with P = -7.5 x 10~8 s s-1 (P/P = -0.02 ...

Notes: Summary HPLC determination of pheophytinatonicke(II) (Pheo-Ni) prepared by the replacement of magnesium(II) in chlorophyll with nicke(II) is described. The good separation of PheoNi was obtained by using chemically bonded C18 as the stationary phase and acetone-methanol (50∶50, vol/vol) as the mobile phase. Conventional spectrophotometric method was also used for the determination of PheoNi. For the synthetic samples prepared by mixing (pheophytinato a) nicke(II) [(Pheo-a) Ni] and (pheophytinato b) nicke(II) [(Pheo-b) Ni], analytical values obtained by the spectrophotometric method were very high compared to those obtained by HPLC. In the proposed HPLC method, (Pheo-a) Ni and (Pheo-b). Ni could be determined in the concentration range of 0.028–30μg/ml and 0.038–30μg/ml with relative standard deviations (n=10) of 3.1% and 0.8%, respectively.

Notes: The surface coverage of porous glass (PD = 500 Å) by styrene adsorbed from its vapor (0.1-6 torr) was studied in a vacuum electrobalance. The adsorption isotherm of the monomer was analyzed by the BET method, and a full monolayer coverage was found to form at a relative pressure of 0.11, weighing 6 mg per gram of glass. Polymerization in submonolayers of adsorbed styrene was initiated by thermal decomposition of predeposited BPO and found to continue until all initiator decomposed, sample cooled, or vapor removed, hence allowing a controlled film thickness. The films were extracted in THF and analyzed by computerized GPC. Molecular weights were in the range 18000-69000. These were related to the rates of polymerization by the usual statistical correlations.
