Notes: Abstract. Statistical analysis of monitoring data is becoming a necessary part of many ground- and surface-water quality management activities. To meet this need a statistical software package for microcomputers called WQStat II has been designed and produced specifically for water quality applications. The software provides tools for data management, summarizing data characteristics, analyzing trends, comparing medians of two or more groups of data, and evaluating excursions or standards violations. To minimize problems associated with nonnormal data and nondetects, WQStat relies primarily on graphical and nonparametric approaches.

Notes: We report transport critical-current measurements of the YBa2Cu3Oy high-Tc superconductors using a contactless transformer technique. A critical-current density of 15.9±1.0 A/cm was observed at 77 K for samples fabricated by a standard preparation method for the high-Tc superconductors. The addition of a small amount of silver to samples of YBa2Cu3Oy has a dramatic degrading effect on the critical current. This is in sharp contrast to the Meissner-effect results, where silver addition has a minimal effect. No significant systematic frequency dependence of the critical-current determination was found between 10 and 5000 Hz. Visual observations of "blips'' in oscilloscope traces and an extrapolation of signals to zero blip height gave consistent results and established an uncertainty of ∼3% for critical-current determination. The range of dimensions of the ring-shaped samples yielded an uncertainty of ∼3% for the cross-sectional area. The overall uncertainty for an absolute measurement of the critical-current density is consequently ∼6%. The uncertainty in relative measurements of the critical-current density is very much less.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between maximal oxygen consumption rate ( $$\dot V{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}$$ ) and mitochondrial content of skeletal muscles was examined in horses and steers (n=3 each). Samples of the heart left ventricle, diaphragm,m. vastus medialis, m. semitendinosus, m. cutaneous thoracicus andm. masseter, as well as samples of muscles collected in a whole-body sampling procedure, were analyzed by electron microscopy. $$\dot V{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}$$ per kilogram body mass was 2.7× greater in horses than steers. This higher $$\dot V{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}$$ was in proportion to the higher total volume of mitochondria in horse versus steer muscle when analyzed from the whole-body samples and from the locomotor muscle samples. In non-locomotor muscles, total mitochondrial volume was greater in horses than steers, but not in proportion to their differences in $$\dot V{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}$$ . The $$\dot V{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}$$ of the mitochondria was estimated to be close to 4.5 ml O2·ml−1 mitochondria in both species. It is concluded that in a comparison of a highly aerobic to a less aerobic mammalian species of similar body size, a higher oxidative potential may be found in all muscles of the more aerobic species. This greater oxidative potential is achieved by a greater total volume of skeletal muscle mitochondria.

Notes: Abstract A similar pattern of spousal association for IQ scores and personality traits was found in two British samples from Oxford and Cambridge. There was no indirect evidence from either sample to suggest that convergence occurred during marriage. All observed assortative mating might well be due to initial assortment.

Notes: Four novel symmetric tri-n-alkyltin fluorides were prepared. In this homologous series, melting point decreases with increase in the carbon chain length while an x-ray diffraction study shows an increase in amorphousness. 1H-NMR spectra in cyclohexane, a nonpolar solvent in which these compounds form long polymeric chain, show a peak broadening effect due to high solution viscosity at very low solute concentration. Contrary to this, the spectra in CDCl3, a polar solvent in which these compounds are monomeric, show well resolved and narrow peaks. IR frequencies for Sn—C vibrations have been assigned.

Notes: Abstract A generalized method is presented for analyzing the fringe patterns frequently encountered in experimental mechanics. By utilizing digital-image-processing and computer-graphics techniques, a set of menu-driven software is developed for interactively implementing the fringe processing. Tests of this software on the images obtained experimentally by photoelasticity, holographic interferometry and speckle interferometry demonstrate its usefulness. Good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results is established.

Notes: A method is presented to study the mechanical behavior of soft, UV curable coating material as a function of temperature of the prepolymer at cure. For such materials, the crosslink density (hence, equilibrium modulus) is found to decrease with increasing cure temperature. The three primary coatings are: a polyurethane acrylate with a nominal equilibrium tensile modulus of 200 psi, a polyurethane acrylate with a nominal equilibrium modulus of 1200 psi, and a non-urethane acrylate with a nominal equilibrium tensile modulus of 60 psi.

Notes: The strength of the bond between primary coating and glass for a dual coated lightguide may be judged by fixing the coating to a substrate and pulling the glass out. The values obtained from such measurements are shown to exhibit a temperature and rate dependence similar to the mechanical properties of the primary coating for a given coating system. Here we combined temperature and rate data for a universal description of the coating to glass adhesion for a dual coating system.
