Notes: A new method is developed for mode analysis of microwaves propagating in an oversize waveguide. A curved reflector is used to disperse the different modes in different directions. The locations of the mode powers are systematically distributed on an intercepting absorber plane. An infrared camera is used for quick visual analysis of the mode map produced as a temperature distribution on the absorber sheet. Detailed analysis is also made by numerically processing the image data. Polarizations of the constituent modes can be determined with a rotated microwave receiver. Usefulness of this method is experimentally demonstrated by comparison with other techniques.

Notes: Tungsten silicide films (WSix) were deposited from WF6 and SiH4 by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) using a tubular reactor system. At the deposition temperature of 150 °C, films having low concentrations of residual fluorine (∼1.5×1021 cm−3) deposited quite conformally on micron-sized trenches. The sticking probability of the film precursor was determined from the step coverage quality, as a function of deposition temperature ranging from 120 to 390 °C. While the sticking probability remained constant above 270 °C, it changed with an activation energy of 7±2 kcal/mol in the temperature range 120–240 °C. The decreased probability of sticking improved the step coverage quality at low temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Intracellular degradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) in bacteria is not yet clear. The properties of the autodigestion of native PHB granules from Zooglea ramigera I-16-M were examined. The release of d(−)-3-hydroxybutyrate was observed only at pH values higher than about 8.5 and at relatively high ionic strength (optimal concentration 200 mM NaCl). Triton X-100 and diisopropylfluorophosphate inhibited this reaction. Addition of the supernatant fraction of Z. ramigera did not increase the release of d(−)-3-hydroxybutyrate from the native PHB granules. On the other hand, using the protease-treated PHB granules from Alcaligenes eutrophus as a substrate, PHB depolymerase activity was detected in the supernatant fraction of Z. ramigera cells. The soluble PHB depolymerase showed similar properties to the enzyme in the PHB granules. Since PHB depolymerase activity was found in fractions containing d(−)-3-hydroxybutyrate oligomer hydrolase activity, which were separated by DEAE-Toyopearl or by Sephacryl S-100, it is possible that the intracellular PHB depolymerase is identical to the oligomer hydrolase which has been purified already.

Notes: Abstract When a weak shock wave reflects from wedges its reflection pattern does not appear to be a simple Mach reflection. This reflection pattern is known to be von Neumann Mach reflection in which a Mach stem can not necessarily be straight. In this paper the local change of the Mach stem curvature was experimentally and numerically investigated. A distinct triple point, at which the curvature becomes infinite as appears in a simple Mach reflection, was not observed but the Mach stem curvature became a maximum between foot of the Mach stem and a point, P1, at which an incident shock met with a reflected shock. Maximum curvature point P2 and P1 do not coincide for small wedge angles and tend to merge over a certain wedge angle. Experimental results agreed with numerical results. The trajectory angle of P2 was found to be expressed well by Whitham's shock-shock angle.

Notes: Abstract When isolated guinea pig major basic protein (MBP) was applied to SDS-PAGE, it exhibited a single band with an apparent molecular weight of 11000. When rat peritoneal mast cells were exposed to MBP at concentrations higher than 0.3 μM, significant histamine release was elicited both in the presence and absence of extracellular Ca2+. The histamine releasing activity of MBP was more pronounced in a Ca-free medium than in the presence of Ca2+. When MBP was applied on reverse phase HPLC, two distinct peaks were observed. These two proteins exhibited identical molecular weights and pI values. Their amino acid compositions were very similar. It was therefore assumed that guinea pig MBP is composed of two subtypes, namely GMBP1 and GMBP2, and that both have similar histamine releasing activities. MBP elicited not only45Ca uptake from the extracellular medium but also induced Ca2+ release from intracellular Ca stores.

Notes: Summary Length, diameter and surface area of each of 6 segments of the large intestine were determined and calculated in 920 Japanese patients who underwent barium enema. Of the length and surface area measurements obtained, those of the transverse colon were the largest, followed by those of the sigmoid colon. The diameter of the ascending colon was the largest, while those of the descending colon and sigmoid colon were the smallest. There were various sex differences in size of the large intestine. Length and surface area of the entire large intestine in males were shorter and smaller respectively than those in females. Lengths of the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon and rectum in males were shorter than those in females. Diameters of the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum in males were larger than those in females. Total surface areas of the ascending colon and transverse colon in males were smaller than those in females, while total surface areas of the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum in males were larger than those in females. Length of the entire large intestine tended to be increased with age. Length and surface area of the entire large intestine tended to be increased with an increase in physical dimensions in females.
