Notes: High-resolution, fast optical hole-burning results are reported for the amorphous system cresyl violet in ethanol glass at 1.3 K. Holes are burned and detected using a novel technique which allows precise detection of narrow (∼0.03 cm−1 ), shallow (∼1%) holes 10 μs to 50 ms after their generation. The technique is described in detail along with careful tests demonstrating the validity of its results. The hole width is observed to increase linearly with time when plotted against log time. Using the four time correlation function description of optical hole burning, the time-dependent increase in hole width (spectral diffusion) is shown to arise from a broad distribution of fluctuation rates in the glass with the probability of having a fluctuation at rate R proportional to 1/R. The 10 μs to 50 ms data is combined with hole-width data spanning the range 100 ms to 10 000 s and with two-pulse picosecond photon echo data. The two-pulse photon echo linewidth is calculated by extrapolating the fluctuation rate distribution obtained from the hole-width data to short times. The results are in excellent agreement with experimental echo results. The combined data from the two sets of hole-burning experiments provides a detailed description of the glass dynamics over nine decades of time, 10 000 s to 10 μs. Together with the two-pulse photon echo results, the data provide information on the glass dynamical behavior over seven decades faster in time as well. The net result is a description of the dynamics in low-temperature ethanol glass on time scales spanning 16 decades.

Notes: Sequential deposition of Pd/AuGe/Ag/Au and rapid thermal annealing are used to form shallow ohmic contacts to n-GaAs and n-AlxGa1−xAs. Ion backscattering measurements and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy show limited metal-substrate reaction and uniform interfaces. The metallization on GaAs displays good electrical properties with a contact resistivity of 2.0×10−6 Ω cm2 at a carrier concentration of 2×1017 cm−3. The contacts formed on Al0.55Ga0.45As have a contact resistivity of 2.1×10−5 Ω cm2 at a carrier concentration of 7.5×1017 cm−3.

Notes: Abstract. The Formosa snakehead, Channa maculata (Lacepède), and the largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepède), were given an intraperitoneal (i.p.) and/or intramuscular (i.m.) inoculation of Nocardia asteroides isolated from cultured Formosa snakehead, Typical granulomatous lesions induced by the experimental fish were similar to the naturally infected cases. The Formosa snakehead showed 100% and 93% mortality at 14 and 35 days after i.m. inoculation with 8 mg and 0·8 mg of bacterial suspension, respectively. The largemouth bass was slightly resistant to N. asteroides but still had 95% mortality at 35 days after inoculation (i.m.) with 8 mg bacterial suspension. The bacteria were easily reisolated from spleen and kidney of the experimental fish. Many typical multifocal granulomata were found at the sites of injection and the internal organs such as liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, intestine, gills, eyes and brain. The result indicated that the N. asteroides isolated from the field ease was pathogenic to Formosa snakehead and largemouth bass.

Notes: An algorithm is described which combines the magic integer concept with that of representing a large number of phases by random numbers. The process, called MAGEX89, is more economical than previous magic integer approaches and in a number of tests its performance compares favourably with those of other commonly used methods of solving small structures.

Notes: Abstract For the electrochemical reduction of glucose to sorbitol at a lead cathode the effect of varying the secondary electrode is examined. A porous hydrogen diffusion anode was used and the results compared with those using a lead anode. Reaction conditions involved change of pH from 3.5 to 9.5, temperature from 30 to 45°C and concentration of glucose from 0.5 to 2.5m. Using the gas diffusion anode, efficient operation was possible without a diaphragm and the cell voltage decreased by about 50% with no change to the efficiency of the cathodic reduction compared with the conventional divided cell with lead electrodes. Thus the power usage can be reduced greatly, which may influence competition between electrochemical and pressure hydrogenation routes.

Notes: Summary The establishment and partial characterization of continuous cell lines fromCyprinus carpio is described. Three new cell lines designated CCT, CCG, and CCF, were established from testis, gill, and fin tissue of color carp,C. carpio, respectively. These cell lines have been subcultured more than 500 times since their initiation in May 1984. The optimal incubation temperature for growth is 31° C for CCT and 37° C for CCG and CCF. The modal chromosome numbers for CCT, CCG, and CCF cell lines are 38, 200, and 100, respectively. The duration of the cell cycle at 31° C for each cell line is 10.18 h (CCT), 15.28 h (CCG), and 18.76 h (CCF). All three cell lines are refractory to chum salmon virus. The CCT cell line is susceptible to three serotypes (Ab, Sp, and VR-299) of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), eel virus european, milkfish birnavirus, hard clam birnavirus, and eel herpesvirus from Formosa. In contrast, both CCG and CCF cell lines possess a very strict viral susceptibility. Only the IPNV Sp. serotype was seen to infect those two cell lines in vitro.

Notes: Abstract Terminal constraint optimal control problems with unbounded control operators are considered. It is shown that the optimal solutions can be represented in a feedback form via a solution of an appropriate Riccati equation. In particular, it is proved that, for systems described by partial differential equations with infinite speed of propagation, boundary exact null controllability can be realized in feedback form.

Notes: Abstract A sand sample collected at the foot of Flaming Mountain was studied further. On the basis of the change in the relative intensity after heat treatment, one of the sextets observed in its Mössbauer spectrum at liquid nitrogen temperature was ascribed to goethite. This result provides a useful information on the geological history of the region where the mountain is located.
