Notes: The jet from a nominally axisymmetric shaped charge is formed by the collapse of the typically conical liner under the high pressures resulting from detonation of the explosive around it. Where asymmetries are present the velocities imparted to the elements of the liner at a given axial distance from the cone tip will vary as a function of the azimuthal angle among other variables. In general these elements will not meet at all. Conversely a pair of liner elements that do meet will in general have started from different axial positions, and will meet away from the nominal axis of symmetry of the charge. This effect renders the formation process asymmetrical. Consequently the jet particles have an off-axis velocity component which can substantially degrade the penetrative capability of the charge. A complete analysis of asymmetrical liner collapse and jet formation is presented for the case where the liner is axisymmetric, but there is an azimuthal variation in liner projection velocity. The classical analysis of symmetric liner collapse and jet formation is extended to include this type of asymmetry. Earlier work on linear shaped charges, particularly a model for asymmetric jet formation, is drawn upon to consider plane sections of the liner individually. A fully three-dimensional analysis is then achieved by the combination of the results for these sections. This analysis is implemented in a computational model and example results are presented and compared in as far as is possible and meaningful with previous theoretical and experimental results. Good agreement with the previous theoretical work is obtained, and the values of the off-axis velocity components predicted are of the orders observed in the limited experimental data as yet available.

Notes: Summary The issues arising from implementing an early intervention service, developed in the rural United States in the late 1960s in a range of different cultural contexts over a period of a quarter of a century, are explained. Services from India, Bangladesh, Jamaica and the United Kingdom are compared. As well as considering cross-cultural aspects of Portage, variability within one country, the United Kingdom, is considered by comparing one service in an inner-city area and one in a rural area.

Notes: Segmented KTP waveguides have been used to produce efficient type I sum-frequency generation. Two Ti-sapphire lasers, tunable between 730 and 1070 nm were used as pump sources and up-converted radiation near four wavelengths between 390 and 480 nm was obtained. More than 2 mW of blue light was generated with 100 mW at each of the two fundamental wavelengths, which is 2–3 orders of magnitude higher output power than previously reported for guided-wave sum-frequency generation. Tunability up to 3 nm was achieved for the up-converted light and an increased efficiency measured at the degeneracy point.

Notes: A study was conducted on the genetic control of the response of Erysiphe graminis f.sp. hordei, the causal agent of barley powdery mildew, to two fungicides: the hydroxypyrimidine ethirimol, and the triazole, sterol demethylation inhibitor triadimenol. In tests of responses to both fungicides, sets of progeny of various crosses were classified by principal components analysis into discrete resistant and sensitive classes. A single allele controlled the response to ethirimol of the resistant isolate DH14 in crosses with the sensitive isolates CC52 and CC138. The ethirimol-resistance alleles of DH14 and another resistant isolate. CC107, are at the same locus or are closely linked. Alleles at single loci controlled resistance and sensitivity to triadimenol in crosses of DH14 (sensitive) with CC107 (moderately resistant) and CC138 (highly resistant). There was no evidence for polygenic control of response to either fungicide. The ethirimol response locus and the two putative triadimenol response loci are designated Eth1 and Tdl1 and Tdl2, respectively. There was no evidence for linkage of Eth1 and Tdl2 in the cross CC138 × DH14, in which responses to both fungicides segregated.

Notes: : A generalized unit hydrograph method is developed and evaluated for ungaged watersheds. A key component in this method is the value of a dimensionless storage coefficient. Procedures to estimate this coefficient are given using calibrated values from 142 rainfall-runoff events gaged in watershed located mainly in the Eastern US. Only limited success was obtained in predicting this storage coefficient. Thirty-seven, independent rainfall-runoff events were used to test the proposed technique. The generalized unit hydrograph predicted the observed runoff hydrographs fairly well with considerable improvement in accuracy over the SCS dimensionless unit hydrograph. Approximately one-half of test storms had percent errors in predicted peak flow rates that were less than 34 percent compared to percent error of 88 percent with the SCS method.

Notes: Recent studies have demonstrated that Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) exhibit higher growth rates when held at high stocking densities. It has been argued that these increased growth rates are a result of decreased social interactions at the increased densities. The current study was designed to test this hypothesis by examining: (1) the frequency of agonistic interactions, (2) the proportion of time spent swimming and (3) growth rates among groups of young of the year Arctic charr held at different stocking densities. It was found that charr reared at higher densities exhibited significantly higher mean weights and lengths than those at the lower densities. The behavioural observations revealed that charr initiated significantly fewer agonistic interactions and spent a significantly greater amount of time shoaling at high densities than charr held at the medium or low densities. It is argued that these behavioural responses may serve to lower energy expenditures, resulting in the increased growth rates.

Notes: Summary Dopamine D1 and D2 receptors were determined in brain tissue taken post mortem from schizophrenic patients previously known to have had tardive dyskinesia and yet who had not received neuroleptic drug treatment for over one year prior to death. In comparison with age-matched control subjects, diminished D2 receptor density was observed in striatal regions, while these receptors appeared to be increased in the pallidum, an area of the brain particularly implicated in the production of dyskinesias. D l receptors showed similar tendencies to lower numbers in the striatum in tardive dyskinesia.
