Notes: Tests of the electron beam injector for the Boeing/Los Alamos Average Power Laser Experiment have demonstrated first time operation of a photocathode radio frequency gun accelerator at 25% duty factor, exceeding previous photocathode operating parameters by three orders of magnitude. The macropulse format was 30 Hz and 8.3 ms with a micropulse frequency of 27 MHz. Average beam currents of up to 32 mA have been accelerated to 5 MeV for an average beam power of 160 kW. The macropulse peak current was 128 mA. The 32 mA average beam current exceeds previous cathode performance by a factor of 1000. Emittance measurements demonstrate excellent electron beam quality.

Notes: Abstract. Recent experiments on soils overlying sand, chalk and limestone aquifers have shown that nitrate leaching losses can be decreased by modifying crop husbandry. Green cover during winter, if established early enough, can reduce nitrate loss. Cultivations can be timed to minimize leaching, and the advantages of irrigation (increased nitrogen offtake and smaller post-harvest soil mineral nitrogen residues) outweigh the potential disadvantage of increased leaching risk during the growing season. It is important not to over-fertilize crops. Using these techniques within farm rotations has decreased nitrate losses in small plot experiments. The next step is to measure the effects on commercial farms where the scale of operation might preclude the high level of husbandry that is required for successful nitrogen management.

Notes: Although it has been postulated that inflammatory cells cause the bronchial hyper-responsiveness which is diagnostic of asthma [1], until recently there has been little direct evidence of such a link. We have recently shown that calcium ionophore-activated human neutrophils and eosinophils can induce a state of human airway hyperresponsiveness in vitro [2]. In this study we have shown that the anti-inflammatory agent nedocromil sodium, 10-7m, inhibited the hyperresponsiveness induced by products released from ionophore activated neutrophils but did not inhibit the release of leukotriene B4 from the same cells. Neutrophil-induced bronchial hyperresponsiveness was also inhibited by pre-treatment of the bronchial tissues with a thromboxane A2 and prostaglandin receptor antagonist, GR32191,10-7m. These findings indicate that cyclooxygenase products are involved in bronchial hyperresponsiveness induced by inflammatory cell products in vitro and that their release can be inhibited by nedocromil sodium.

Notes: Abstract The quality of reduction of distal radius fractures is assessed mainly by degree of restoration of radial angle and palmar tilt. This cadaver study investigates the effects of forearm rotation of these measurements. A 5° rotational change produces a 1.6° change in palmar tilt on the conventional lateral view and a 1.0° change on the 15° lateral view. Lateral radiographs could be rotated 15°–30° and still be considered acceptable. Therefore, rotation may produce up to a 4.0° (15° lateral view) or 6.4° (conventional lateral view) change in measured palmar tilt. To provide clearer measuring landmarks and minimize error due to rotation, we recommend obtaining the 15° lateral view routinely in fractures with significant dorsal angulation. We also studied the interobserver variability of different surgeons assessing radial angle and palmar tilt. The mean standard deviation between surgeons was 3.2° for radial angle, 3.6° for conventional lateral palmar tilt, and 2.1° for 15° lateral palmar tilt.

Notes: Abstract The cortical anatomical substrates by which visual information may influence the frontal areas controlling reaching movements to visual targets were studied in monkeys. A reaching task was employed to characterize the arm-related regions of the frontal lobe. Injections of retrograde tracers into these physiologically defined cortical fields revealed a gradient of parallel corticocortical pathways originating in the superior parietal lobule and impinging upon different frontal regions. These results support the hypothesis that the superior parietal lobule can supply the frontal motor and premotor areas not only with the proprioceptive information but also with the visual input required for the control of reaching.
