Notizen: We report the observation of a giant magnetothermopower (GMT), giant magnetoresistance (GMR), and on magnetization measurements in Co/Cu[111] superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The maximum value of the GMT (at room temperature) was 14% for a Cu thickness of 9 A(ring) and the maximum GMR (at 4.2 K) was −26% at 7 A(ring) of Cu. Oscillations in the remnant magnetization and the saturation field as a function of Cu thickness with a period of about 10 A(ring) were observed. However, there were no oscillations in the GMT or the GMR. The maximum values of both the GMT and GMR are associated with saturation fields in excess of 40 kOe and with small remnant magnetizations. These results are consistent with the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling.

Notizen: Results are reported from an investigation of the effects of selected processing parameters on the morphology and properties of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) superconducting thin films grown directly on polycrystalline silver substrates by chemical-vapor deposition (CVD). These results were achieved through a set of experimental studies which examined: (i) recrystallization mechanisms of polycrystalline silver and their effect on the deposition of YBCO thin films; and (ii) CVD processing conditions leading to the growth of high-quality YBCO films. The samples were analyzed using dynamic impedance, four-point resistivity probe, x-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering, and scanning electron microscopy. These studies showed that substrate temperature played a critical role not only in the formation of YBCO films, but also in the recrystallization of silver substrates, which in turn greatly influenced film growth. The studies also led to the identification of a two-stage processing scheme for the growth of YBCO films on silver. The first processing stage consisted of a substrate conditioning cycle which involved a 10 min ramping from room temperature to deposition temperature where the substrates were held for an additional 10 min in a flow of 70 sccm O2 at a reactor working pressure of 2 Torr. The second processing stage involved actual film deposition at 760–800 °C for 3–10 min (depending on desired film thickness) in a mixed flow of 70 sccm O2 and 210 sccm N2O at a reactor working pressure of 4 Torr. Samples thus produced were highly oriented along the c axis perpendicular to the substrate with a zero resistance transition temperature of 87 K and a critical current density of 2×104 A/cm2 (77 K, B=0). The films had a thickness of 200–700 nm depending on the length of the growth cycle, which corresponded to the growth rates in the range 65–130 nm/min. A growth mechanism for YBCO on polycrystalline silver, which emphasized the role of silver recrystallization, was consequently proposed and discussed.

Notizen: We report the magnetization reversal and magnetic anisotropy behavior of ultrathin Co/Cu(111)/Co (dCu=20 and 27 A(ring)) trilayer structures prepared by MBE on a 500-A(ring) Ge/GaAs(110) epilayer. We describe an arrangement in which the magnetization components parallel and perpendicular to the applied field are both determined from longitudinal MOKE measurements. For the samples examined, coherent rotation of the magnetization vector is observed when the magnetic field is applied along the hard in-plane anisotropy axis, with the magnitude of the magnetization vector constant and close to its bulk value. Results of micromagnetic calculations closely reproduce the observed parallel and perpendicular magnetization loops, and yield strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropies in both layers while the interlayer coupling appears to be absent or negligible in comparison with the anisotropy strengths. An absence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling has been observed previously [W. F. Egelhoff, Jr. and M. T. Kief, Phys. Rev. B 45, 7795 (1992)] in contrast to recent results, indicating that AF coupling [M. T. Johnson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 969 (1992)] and GMR [D. Grieg et al., J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 110, L239 (1992)] can occur in Co/Cu(111)/Co structures grown by MBE, but these properties are sensitively dependent on growth conditions. The absence of coupling in our samples is attributed to the presence of a significant interface roughness induced by the Ge epilayer. The uniaxial anisotropies are assumed to arise from strain or defects induced in the film.

Notizen: The 59Co NMR has been measured for superlattices of Co(15 A(ring))/Cu (7 or 18 A(ring)) grown with either a Au or Cu buffer layer between the substrate and the superlattice. As was reported earlier the Co (15 A(ring))/Cu (7 A(ring)) (Au) superlattice has the largest magnetoresistance (ΔR/R∼26%) known for a MBE grown Co/Cu multilayer. The NMR measurements show that the Au-based superlattices have very flat interfaces and (111) orientation, two features which were supposed to preclude a large value of ΔR/R, and that the average strain in the Co layers is greater for a Au than a Cu buffer layer.

Notizen: At present there is no generally accepted treatment regimen for eradicating metronidazole-resistant Helicobacter pylori. This study determines the eradication rate after treatment with 40 mg omeprazole o.m. and 500 mg amoxycillin q.d.s. for 14 days, with 120 mg tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate q.d.s. for the first week (Days 1–7) and 750 mg ciprofloxacin b.d. for the second week (Days 8–14). Thirty patients (16 male, mean age 45 years, range 16–80 years) with duodenal ulcers (n= 18) or non-ulcer dyspepsia (n= 2) and metronidazole-resistant H. pylori detected by histology, culture, in vitro sensitivity tests and a positive 13C-urea breath test entered the study. Follow-up was by 13C-urea breath test at the end of treatment and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Eradication was denned as a negative 13C-urea breath test at least 1 month after finishing treatment. H. pylori was successfully eradicated in 21/30 (71%) patients (median follow-up 10.2 months, range 4–12 months). A pre-treatment ciprofloxacin-resistant strain was isolated in 1/9 patients in whom eradication failed. Of 30 patients 29 completed the 2-week regimen; one patient experienced dizziness after 3 days of treatment. The most common side-effect was increased stool frequency (n= 6). This 2-week treatment regimen for metronidazole-resistant H. pylori is well tolerated and achieves an eradication rate of 70%.

Notizen: Cocksfoot/orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) anther cDNA clones encoding the group II allergen Dac g II were previously isolated on the basis of immunoreactivity of human, rabbit, and murine antibodies with a 24–kDa protein expressed as a fusion protein with β-galactosidase. Nucleotide sequencing reveals an open reading frame predicting expression of a 98–amino-acid (11–kDa) polypeptide exhibiting 〉 90% homology with the group II allergen of Lolium perenne, Lol p II. In vitro translation of different sized clone fragments generated by polymerase chain amplification confirms eukaryotic expression of a 10–12–kDa polypeptide by SDS-PAGE and the position of a translational stop apparently unrecognized during expression of λgt 11 in E. coli. The unusual characteristics of the prokaryote-expressed fusion proteins may be exerting conformational alterations in Dac g II, as reflected by previous demonstrations of differences in human IgE immunoreactivity. Northern blot analysis using PCR-generated partial and full-length probes suggests that group II allergens may be encoded by a different family or families of temporally expressed genes from those encoding group I major allergens, although a group I gene may have been the progenitor.

Notizen: Summary Insulin resistance in Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus may be associated with raised erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport activity in patients with hypertension, or nephropathy, or both. However, in these circumstances it is difficult to separate the impact of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and nephropathy on erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport from that of insulin resistance. We have therefore examined the relationship between insulin-mediated glucose disposal and erythrocyte sodiumlithium countertransport in 41 normotensive (mean blood pressure 120/74 mm Hg), normoalbuminuric (mean albumin excretion 6.2 μg/min), normolipidaemic (mean serum cholesterol 4.3 mmol/l and mean serum triglycerides 1.0 mmol/l) Type 1 diabetic patients. Erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport was on average 0.31 mmol Li · h−1 · l erythrocytes −1 (range 0.07–0.69). Nine patients had values above 0.40 mmol Li · h−1 erythrocytes−1 (0.51±0.10 mmol Li · h−1 · l erythrocytes−1). The patients with high erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport were matched for age, sex, BMI, HbA1 and duration of diabetes, with nine patients with normal erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport. Insulin-mediated glucose disposal was evaluated during the last hour of a euglycaemic clamp (insulin 0.015 U · kg−1 · h−1; blood glucose clamped at 7.0 mmol/l). The free insulin levels were comparable between the patients with high and normal erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport (37.2±14.7 mU/l and 34.7±17.2 mU/l respectively). Insulin-mediated glucose disposal was on average 3.1±1.5 (range 0.8–6.8) mg · kg−1 · min−1. Erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport did not correlate with insulin-mediated glucose disposal in all 41 cases (r s=−0.14), but when the matched groups were compared, patients with raised erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport had lower insulin-mediated glucose disposal rates compared to those with normal erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport (2.7±1.1 vs 3.9±1.3 mg · kg−1 · min−1; p=0.044). In these 18 patients a significant inverse relationship was found between erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport and insulin-mediated glucose disposal (r s=−0.62; p=0.003). Raised erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport appears to be associated with insulin insensitivity in Type 1 diabetes, even in the absence of hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and nephropathy.

Notizen: An au/Pd/Au(111) multilayer system grown by molecular beam epitaxy has been studied by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. An analysis of the dependence of the relative intensity of the Au and Pd core-level XPS lines on the take-off angle indicates that the thickness of the Pd sandwhich layer is ∼5 monolayers. The photoelectron spectra show the presence of more than one chemical environment for each element and suggest that the core-level photoelectron spectra of Pd atoms in the interfacial layers and the inner layers of the Pd sandwich are split by ∼0.6 eV. The photoelectron spectra of the valence band show that the Pd sandwich retains the high density of states at the Fermi energy that is characteristic of Pd metal.
