Notes: Abstract Trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (VMD) was measured at the lumbar spine using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and at the distal radius using peripheral QCT (pQCT) in 60 Japanese women aged 21–86 years. The age-dependent decrease between age 20 and 80 years was found to be almost identical between vertebral trabecular VMD and radial trabecular VMD, averaging 2.5±0.26 (SE) and 2.5±0.30 mg/cm3 per year, respectively. A highly significant correlation was found between vertebral and radial trabecular VMD (r=0.806,p〈0.001) with a prediction error of ±9.6% (± SD/mean). In the present study, a relatively constant trabecular VMD ratio was found between the vertebral and distal radial sites, despite the relatively small study population. This may indicate a close parallelism between vertebral and radial trabecular bone.

Notes: Abstract  We investigated the optimum conditions for the formation of nitrile hydratase (NHase), which acts on indole-3-acetonitrile, in Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Good inducers for enzyme formation have been found to be roughly classified into three representative types of amides such as pivalamide, crotonamide and ɛ-caprolactam. When the strain was cultivated in the optimum culture medium containing ɛ-caprolactam as an inducer, in particular, the specific activity of NHase in the culture was 13 000 times higher than that without addition of amides, nitriles or acids. In this case, NHase formed accounted for 12% of the total cellular soluble protein. The purified NHase did not act on ɛ-caprolactam, and ɛ-caprolactam was not degraded during the cultivation by the strain, suggesting that ɛ-caprolactam seems to keep driving the NHase induction mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. In Japan, unlike in the United States and Europe, where osteoporosis is synonymous with postmenopausal osteoporosis, the need for treatment of osteoporosis has been emphasized only for elderly women with established disease. This may be because women in the immediate postmenopausal period in Japan are virtually free of symptoms such as lumbago and signs such as spinal compression fracture. Osteoporosis typically does not manifest itself until about age 65; therefore, postmenopausal osteoporosis with vertebral fracture below the age of 60 is quite rare in Japan. Unique features of treatment for osteoporosis in Japan include rare use of estrogen replacement therapy, common use of vitamin D derivatives (especially 1α(OH) vitamin D) without notable side effects, and use of calcitonin almost exclusively in a low-dose intermittent regimen (20 U/week). Similarly, the use of ipriflavone is common, and calcium supplementation, especially with an active absorbable algae calcium with high bioavailability (AAACa), is effective and popular. The emphasis on the use of calcium, vitamin D, and calcitonin in the treatment of osteoporosis may be explained by an extremely low dietary calcium intake in Japan. Other factors that favor reliance on the calcium-focused approach and avoidance of estrogen include a fatalistic and naturalistic view toward menopause; an uneasiness with hormone replacement therapy; an older female population who seek osteoporosis treatment because of uneventful immediate postmenopausal periods; and the efficient absorption of calcium from the intestine with favorable response to exogenous vitamin D due to a long-standing calcium deficiency and possibly a low incidence of vitamin D-receptor abnormalities.

Notes: Abstract Out-of-plane resistivity pc(T) of optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2−xSrxCuO4 has been investigated under hydrostatic pressure up to 8GPa. We found a drastic decrease in ϱc which reaches 50% at 8GPa. The large change of ϱc is understood as due to a small variation of the lattice parameter c. In comparison with a change of pc(T) estimated from a change of c due to thermal contraction, we conclude that the well known temperature-linear dependence of ϱc is apparent metallic one; essentially ϱc is nonmetallic over the whole temperature range, and can be described in terms of tunneling or quantum hopping conduction between CuO2 layers. Such tunneling conduction is enhanced by the scattering in the CuO2 plane at the oxygen defects which affect the in-plane resistivity only very weakly.

Notes: Abstract Non-cuprate layered perovskite Sr2RuO4, which is an analogue of (La,Sr)2CuO4, exhibits superconductivity below Tc≈1K. We have synthesized a new system Sr3−xCaxRu2Oy and found the solubility of Ca to be at least as much as x = 2. These samples are not superconductive down to 2K but magnetically ordered. The x dependence of the lattice parameters and that of Tmag clearly indicate that there are at least two distinct structural phases in Sr3−xCaxRu2Oy.

Notes: Abstract We discuss some of the current issues on the copper-free layered perovskite superconductor Sr2RuO4, for which a sharp transition at Tc = 1.2 K has been reproducibly obtained. The normal state is characterized as an essentially twodimensional Fermi liquid, and the coherent interlayer transport is established only at low temperatures. The cylindrical Fermi surface observed by de Haas-van Alphen experiments is consistent with other thermodynamic and transport properties. Although the specific heat jump across Tcconfirms the bulk superconductivity, the large residual T-linear term which correlates with the variation in Tcis unusual and suggestive of unconventional pairing.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the normal-state conduction of superconducting Sr2RuO4 (Tc ∼ 1K), which is isostructural to La2−xSrxCuO4. The resistivity of single crystals shows a crossover at TM∼130K from 3D metallic conduction at lower temperatures to 2D one at higher temperatures. Concerning the temperature dependence of the out-of-plane resistivity, we present a systematic interpretation based on competition between the life time of the quasiparticles and the time for the quasiparticles to travel between the adjacent RuO2 planes.
