    Notes: Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (Bi2212) crystals with CuO inclusions were grown on the surface of KCl flux. The density of CuO incorporations of 109/cm2 was similar to that for Y2BaCuOy in melt-textured YBa2Cu3Oy. The CuO inclusions are needlelike particles with diameter of less than 1 μm. Magnetization measurements show enhanced flux pinning at high magnetic field, compared to crystals without CuO. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present photoconductivity data on GaAs quantum wires grown on a V-grooved substrate by flow rate modulation epitaxy. They show that a moderate excitation power density, ∼1 W/cm2, allows the observation of the absorption structure of a single GaAs quantum wire embedded in a p-i-n diode. Furthermore, by increasing the number of active wires inside a diode, the photoconductivity signal is enhanced and additional details of the absorption structure are evidenced. And, finally, a rough quantitative agreement is obtained between the experimental absorption transitions and a simple calculation of the one-dimensional excitonic states using the envelope function approximation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Al/AlN multilayered thin films with periodic thickness λ less than 24 nm were developed by ion beam assisted deposition. A considerably small surface roughness comparable to that of the silicon substrate and much smaller than those of both monolithic Al and AlN films was obtained. Over the investigated range of λ, all the multilayers are harder than the homogeneous AlN film, and a significant hardness enhancement by a factor of ∼2 over that of the AlN film was observed in the multilayer with λ of 6 nm. Moreover, the hardness enhancement is not at the expense of the multilayer toughness, with the multilayer Al/AlN films showing improved plasticity as compared with the AlN film. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The characteristics of the Si–vacuum interface were compared with the characteristics of the oxide–air interface formed following room temperature oxidation for a variety of samples. Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to measure the surface structure following vacuum preparation, and atomic force microscopy was used to measure the oxide surface on the same samples following exposure to air. Samples investigated included nominally flat Si(111) with equilibrated and quenched surface configurations, Si(111) miscut by 1.25° toward the [2¯11] and equilibrated to yield the faceted structure, and nominally flat Si(001) wafers. In all cases, the step morphology of the clean surfaces was duplicated on the surface of the oxide. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Textured (100) diamond films are successfully grown on single-crystalline (100) silicon substrate by electron assisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition from a gas mixture of methane and hydrogen.     Notes: Abstract— A Fourier series approach is proposed to calculate stress intensity factors using weight functions for semi-elliptical surface cracks in flat plates subjected to two-dimensional stress distributions. The weight functions were derived from reference stress intensity factors obtained by three-dimensional finite element analyses. The close form weight functions derived are suitable for the calculation of stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical surface cracks in flat plates under two-dimensional stress distributions with the crack aspect ratio in the range of 0.1 ≤a/c≤ 1 and relative depth in the range of 0 ≤a/t≤ 0.8. Solutions were verified using several two-dimensional non-linear stress distributions; the maximum difference being 6%.

    Notes: Enhancer-dependent transcription in bacteria requires the alternative transcription factor σN (σ54), which forms an RNA polymerase holoenzyme that binds promoters as a transcriptionally inactive complex. We have examined the structure of σN by circular dichroism (CD) analysis. The σN protein and its domains are well structured in the absence of the core RNA polymerase subunits or promoter DNA. Denaturation of σN by temperature as followed by changes in CD shows a concomitant loss of secondary and tertiary structures with a melting temperature of 36°C. The secondary structure displays a two-state melting curve with a second Tm of 85°C. The amino-terminal Region I activation domain together with the acidic Region II does not contribute to the two-state melting. In marked contrast, the integrity of the C-terminal DNA-binding domain is required for the two-state melting. Measurements of pKb also demonstrated that a C-terminal part of σN, but not regions I or I + II, is required for the structural integrity of σN at high pH. Measurements of pKa suggested that α-helical structures are important in σN for the establishment of tertiary structural elements. The tertiary structure near ultraviolet CD signals of σN do not require regions I or I + II but were strongly diminished by C-terminal truncation of σN. Promoter DNA binding resulted in aconformational change in σN, permitting the determination of a binding constant. A typical B-DNA conformation was adopted by the promoter DNA. Implications for the modular domain organization of σN, the function of C-terminal sequences, and domain communication and its role in activation of transcription are discussed.

    Notes: An image analysis system was developed and evaluated as a method for rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium in pure culture and in chicken washes. A direct immunomagnetic separation and immunofluorescent staining technique was developed to capture and identify target cells. Digital images were acquired and segmented into background and bacteria. Bacteria were enumerated using a custom designed image analysis software. The image analyses results were compared with manual enumeration. A correlation coefficient of 0.78 was established between manual and image analysis counts. In addition, the difference between the manual and the image analysis bacterial counts in individual images was low. Image analysis took an average of 15 s to analyze an image. The results indicate that the proposed system has the potential to be used as a rapid screening procedure for bacterial detection in the food industry.

    Notes: Abstract The Sanbaqi uranium deposit in Hunan Province, south China, is the largest of a group of paleokarst-hosted uranium deposits in Lower Carboniferous limestone. Mineralization is localized in cavities and fault-breccias formed by dissolution of carbonates. Four episodes of karst formation are recognized: late Triassic-early Jurassic, late Jurassic-early Cretaceous, Cretaceous-Tertiary and Recent. Field relations indicate that the main uranium mineralization is related to the second karst episode. This is supported by isotopic ages of two pitchblende samples at 129 Ma and 134 Ma, as indicated by their nearly concordant data points on concordia plot. These ages are in the time range of the early Yanshanian tectonic movements that affected southern China, and the faulting related to the movements likely triggered the mineralization process at the Sanbaqi deposit. Associated minerals include pyrite, millerite, ullmannite, niccolite, molybdenite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, calcite and dolomite. Fluid inclusion studies on calcite reveal that temperature of ore deposition was from 181° to 150 °C. The δ18O and δD values of the ore fluids range from 1.5 to 7.9 per mil and from −30.4 and −54.8 per mil, respectively. The mineralogical, fluid inclusion and isotopic data indicate that the minerlization took place in episodic pulses of hydrothermal fluids that were introduced along a set of ring faults. Mobilization and redeposition of earlier formed ore minerals in an open system added to the complexity of the paragenetic sequence. Younger episodes of mineralization occurred during the later karst events as suggested by the geological and additional pitchblende U-Pb isotopic data, during the Cretaceous-Tertiary late Yanshanian tectonic movements and recently. Finally, a comparison of the Sanbaqi uranium deposit with the uranium deposits hosted by solution collapse breccia pipes of the Colorado Plateau, USA, shows that they have many similarities.
