    Notes: The electrical properties of BC2N thin films have been investigated in terms of the temperature dependence of the resistivity and Hall effect measurements. The BC2N thin films were prepared by chemical vapor deposition from acetonitrile and boron trichloride on polycrystalline Ni and quartz substrates. The experimental results indicated that the BC2N films were p-type semiconductors on both substrates, with acceptor levels between 7.5 and 23 meV relative to the valence band. The hole mobility on Ni substrates was one order of magnitude higher than that on the quartz substrates, suggesting that the thin film quality is better on Ni substrates than on quartz substrates. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Gallium nitride is grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy with and without a low-temperature-grown AlN buffer layer. Variations in the surface morphology and the layer properties are compared between two-step growth and direct growth to study the effects of various growth conditions. It is found that (i) conditions that stabilize the GaN(0001) surface serve as guidelines for obtaining mirrored surfaces, and (ii) raising GaN growth temperature improves crystallographic, electrical, and luminescence properties of GaN. The observed improvement in the layer properties with increase in GaN growth temperature suggests that increasing N2 dissociation pressure does not affect GaN properties. GaN growth conditions are analyzed thermodynamically to show that NH3 in the growth ambients has the potential to suppress thermal dissociation of GaN. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A 1.55 μm multiple quantum well laser heteroepitaxially grown on Si substrate operates under the severe aging condition of the light output of 5 mW/facet at 50 °C. The laser has been operating for more than 7000 h. The threshold current and the slope efficiency of the laser on Si at 20 °C are 32 mA and 0.19 W/A, respectively. The maximum operation temperature is above 80 °C. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Efficient tunable ultraviolet generation by intracavity frequency doubling of a continuous wave Ti:sapphire laser was demonstrated. Maximum output is obtained of 460 mW at 398 nm corresponding to a total infrared-to-ultraviolet conversion efficiency over 70%. High conversion efficiency was resulted from a critically phase-matched, temperature-tuned lithium triborate crystal and a novel resonator design. The observed laser damage of the crystal coatings is also discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Pulse operation of electron cyclotron resonance plasma was performed for the fabrication of diamond films by chemical vapor deposition. With square wave amplitude modulation of microwaves at 500 Hz in frequency, the growth rate became twice as large as one of continuous operation with the same microwave power. Time resolved measurement of the optical emission from the pulse modulated plasma was also carried out. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Turbostratic BC2N samples were exposed to intense irradiation regimes in a high resolution electron microscope equipped with a field emission gun. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis was used to check the sp2-bonding type and the composition of the starting materials. In highly crystalline areas, we observed a tendency for the basal planes to curl and form large "open" onionlike features. According to EELS quantification, no change of the composition occurs during their formation. Very occasionally, small nested fullerenes of less than 10 shells each with dimensions of the very internal shell close to that of a C60 were observed. These onions are thought to arise from the bending of a few basal planes of the planar starting material. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Activated mononuclear cells (lymphocytes and monocytes) (MNCs) circulate in peripheral blood and accumulate in the airways of individuals with steady-state asthma. The expression of adhesion molecules on MNCs of 10 patients with steady-state atopic asthma and 10 non-atopic control subjects was measured by flow cytometry. The mean fluorescence intensity of CD23 (P= 0.0003), CDl la (P= 0.034), and very late antigen-4 (VLA-4) (P= 0.016) was increased on lymphocytes of asthmatic patients relative to those of controls. Although the expression of CD16 (P= 0.002) and CD23 (P= 0.002). which are associated with differentiation into macrophages, was increased on monocytes of patients relative to those of controls, monocyte expression of VLA-4 (P= 0.006) and sialyl Lewis X (P= 0.005) was reduced. The concentration of interleukin-4 (lL-4) in serum was significantly higher in asthmatic patients than in normal subjects (P= 0.023), and a significant correlation was apparent between the serum concentration of lL-4 and the expression of VLA-4 on lymphocytes (p= 0.71, P= 0.03) or on monocytes (p=−0.72, P= 0.03) in asthmatic patients. Results suggest that lL-4 may contribute to the priming of adhesion molecule expression on lymphocytes even in steady-state conditions in individuals with chronic allergic inflammation.

    Notes: Abstract  This study evaluates the safety and role of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma in children. Laparoscopy was performed in five patients aged 3 to 13 years because of persistent abdominal pain after blunt trauma. A laparotomy was not indicated from the physical examination, laboratory data, or radiologic findings. With the patient under general anesthesia, a 10-mm trocar was inserted through the umbilical fossa and the intra-abdominal organs were observed for 10 – 60 min under an insufflation pressure of 10 – 12 mmHg. The patients remained hemodynamically stable without pneumothorax development. Three patients underwent laparatomies: one, who had blood in the omental sac, had a duodenal injury with hemorrhagic necrosis and underwent a resection; one with ascites and high amylase levels had an injury of the main pancreatic duct and underwent resection of the pancreatic tail; and one who had fresh blood in the upper abdomen and Douglas’ pouch had a splenic hemorrhage and underwent hemostasis. The other two had serous or serosanguinous ascites and recovered without surgery. In patient 1, the same amount of information might have been obtained from a barium study. In patient 2, the pancreatic transection might have been diagnosed from ascites shown on serial computed tomograms. Patient 3 might also have been treated successfully non-surgically. It hus appears that laparoscopy may be a safe diagnostic method for blunt abdominal trauma in children, however, this small series has yielded insufficient information to assess its usefulness in making the diagnosis and the decision for laparotomy. Further studies are required to ascertain whether it will make any significant difference in the form of management.
