    Notes: The treatment and analysis of small-angle X-ray scattering data are reviewed with specific concern for the glass science. The studies detail the characterization of the submicroscopic structure existing in terms of two-phase particulate systems, multiphase particle systems, non-particulate systems, including those of fractal surfaces, and the application of small-angle X-ray scattering to the examination of the intermediate-range order of glasses. The methods developed are illustrated by small-angle X-ray scattering and anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering results obtained from optical filter glass, glass produced by the sol–gel technique, optical colorless glass inclining to opalescence, porous glass and single-phase phosphate glass.

    Notes: Abstract Neural transplantation, as a therapeutic approach to Parkinson’s disease, still requires allogeneic graft material and raises questions of immunosuppression and graft rejection. The present study investigated the time course of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) expression and astrocytic response in allogeneic dopaminergic grafts, comparing two different grafting protocols. Adult 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned Lewis 1.W rats received intrastriatal cell suspension grafts from the ventral mesencephalon of DA rat fetuses, either as single 1-μl macrograft via metal cannula or as four micrografts of 250 nl/deposit via a glass capillary. No immunosuppression was administered. Immunohistochemistry was performed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 weeks after grafting, using antibodies against donor- and host-specific MHC class I and II antigen, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Most animals showed good allograft survival up to 12 weeks after transplantation with no signs of rejection. Reinnervation of the lesioned striatum by TH-positive neurites was observed from 3–6 weeks on. Expression of donor-specific MHC class I was comparably low in both allogeneic grafting groups, while host MHC class I and II reaction as well as astrocytic response tended to be higher in the macrografted animals. Donor MHC class II was not observed at any time point. It is concluded that intraparenchymal allografts of fetal mesencephalic cell suspensions can survive well in the rat Parkinson model without immunosuppression for at least 12 weeks, and that the expression of moderate amounts of donor-specific MHC class I antigen does not suffice to initiate a rejection process. In addition, the microtransplantation approach may reduce the level of trauma and subsequent MHC and GFAP expression and may, thereby, minimize the risk of graft rejection.

    Notes: Abstract Graminivory by kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spp.) was investigated as a potential mechanism for the keystone role of these rodents in the dynamics of desert grasslands. Experiments confirmed that Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii) cut and consumed a large proportion of the tillers of three Chihuahuan Desert tussock-forming grass species. Field observations indicated that the characteristically cut grass tillers were absent from all-rodent and medium-sized kangaroo rat exclosures, but were frequent in large-sized kangaroo rat and rabbit exclosures, indicating that the medium-sized kangaroo rats (D. ordii, D. merriami) were responsible for grass cutting. Tiller waste as a percentage of peak standing crop ranged from 7% in grassland habitats to 0.7% in Flourensia cernua shrubland. Of the 13 species of perennial, tussock-forming grasses measured, only one, Muhlenbergia porteri, had no tillers cut by kangaroo rats. This study demonstrates that the keystone role of kangaroo rats in Chihuahuan Desert grassland ecosystems is probably the result of their graminivory.

    Notes: Abstract Denitrification is a main branch of the global nitrogen cycle. In the past ten years unravelling the underlying biochemistry and genetics has proceeded at an increasing pace. Fungal denitrification has become a new field. The biochemical investigation of denitrification has culminated in the description of the crystal structures of the two types of nitrite reductases. The N2O reductase shares with cytochrome c oxidase the CuA center as a structurally novel metal site. The cytochrome b subunit of NO reductase has a striking conservation of heme-binding transmembrane segments versus the subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase. Another putative denitrification gene product shows structural relation to the subunit III of the oxidase. N2O reductase and NO reductase may be ancestors of energy-conserving enzymes of the heme-copper oxidase superfamily. More than 30 genes for denitrification are located in a 〉30-kb cluster in Pseudomonas stutzeri, and comparable gene clusters have been identifi ed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Paracoccus denitrificans. Genes necessary for nitrite reduction and NO reduction have a mosaic arrangement with very few conserved locations within these clusters and relative to each other.

    Notes: Abstract Zooglans with altered sugar composition were synthesized by Zoogloea ramigera by varying the glucose concentration and initial medium pH. The relative mol % of the sugar components, glucose and galactose, in the exopolymer made with 2% (w/v) glucose as the carbon source was 66 and 34%, respectively. By varying the glucose concentration and initial medium pH, the mol % ratios of glucose to galactose in zooglan ranged from 70 : 30 to 58 : 42. Also, glucose analogs, 3- O-methyl-D-glucose, 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose, and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, were used as a co-substrate with glucose to produce modified zooglans. The mol % ratios of glucose to galactose in exopolymers produced by co-feeding glucose analogs ranged from 70 : 30 to 9 : 91.

    Notes: Abstract The component sugars of heteropolysaccharide-7 (PS-7) produced by Beijerinckia indica were rhamnose and glucose (1.0:4.8, mol:mol) by gas chromatographic analysis. Galacturonic acid, previously reported as a repeat unit of PS-7, was not found in purified PS-7. The yield of PS-7 varied with physiological conditions, such as concentration of carbon source and initial pH of medium, but the molar ratio of rhamnose to glucose stayed within 1.0 to 4.6-5.1. B. indica utilized glucose and some glucose analogs as carbon sources and produced exopolymers, although there was no direct incorporation of these sugars into PS-7. The molar ratio of rhamnose to glucose in each polymer synthesized from glucose-related sugars showed no significant variation (1.0 to 4.5-4.7)
