    Notes: Clotting factor concentrates prepared from human plasma are a potential route of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in patients with coagulation disorders. However, it is not clear whether B19 transmits and persistently infects patients with haemophilia, especially those with HIV infection. We examined serological and virological markers of B19 in samples from 40 patients with haemophilia who had been receiving several brands of clotting factor concentrates. All of them were anti-B19 IgG seropositive and anti-B19 IgM seronegative. The levels of anti-B19 IgG were significantly higher in haemophiliacs than in healthy donors, whereas there was no difference between the level of anti-B19 IgG in haemophiliacs with HIV infection and those without HIV infection. Moreover, there was no difference between the level of anti-B19 IgG in haemophiliacs receiving recombinant factor VIII and that in those receiving plasma-derived clotting factors. Although by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) B19 DNA was detected at very low levels (〈 40 DNA copies mL−1, in 3 out of 40 haemophiliacs, persistent B19 infection was negligible.

    Notes: Abstract.  The goal of our study was to determine whether evidence for chaos in heart rate variability (HRV) can be observed when the respiratory input to the autonomic controller of heart rate is forced by the deterministic pattern associated with periodic breathing. We simultaneously recorded, in supine healthy volunteers, RR intervals and breathing volumes for 20 to 30 min (1024 data point series) during three protocols: rest (control), fixed breathing (15 breath/min) and voluntary periodic breathing (3 breaths with 2 s inspiration and 2 s expiration followed by an 8 s breath hold). On both the RR interval and breathing volume series we applied the non-linear prediction method (Sugihara and May algorithm) to the original time series and to distribution-conserved isospectral surrogate data. Our results showed that, in contrast to the control test, during both fixed and voluntary periodic breathing the variability of breathing volumes was clearly deterministic non-chaotic. During all the three protocols, the RR-interval series’ non-linear predictability was consistent with one of a chaotic series. However, at rest, no clear difference was observed between the RR-interval series and their surrogates, which means that no clear chaos was observed. During fixed breathing a difference appeared, and this difference seemed clearer during voluntary periodic breathing. We concluded that HRV dynamics were chaotic when respiration was forced with a deterministic non-chaotic pattern and that normal spontaneous respiratory influences might mask the normally chaotic pattern in HRV.

    Notes: Abstract Zero‐field μSR measurements have been carried out in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states of the heavy fermion alloys: Ce1-xLaxRu2Si2 (x=0.05,0.13,0.25). In Ce1-xLaxRu2Si2 system, TK drastically decreases with x from 24 K for x=0 and becomes very close to the magnetic ordering temperature TN. As functions of TK and TN, the magnetic instabilities were studied in this system. For x=0.05,\ 0.13\ \mboxand\ 0.25 samples, longitudinal muon spin relaxation was measured to study non‐magnetic to magnetic transition and the change from itinerant to localized electron state with increasing La impurities. We discuss the dynamics of muon spins in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic state.

    Notes: Abstract The inhibition of lipid peroxidation and radical scavenging effects were studied to evaluate the antioxidant activity for extracts of 17 species of seaweed. The antioxidant effect was evaluated by determination of lipoxygenase activity and by α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) decolorization. Lipoxygenase activity was depressed in the presence of aqueous and ethanol extracts of 4 algal species; Sargassum species had the highest antioxidant activity of all the species examined. The ethanol extracts of one Sargassum species showed competitive inhibition with the substrate. The same species also showed radical scavenging activity in the DPPH decolorization test. Comparison of these results shows no relationship between enzyme inhibition and radical scavenging activity.
