Notes: Summary The linewidth of the microcavity exciton polariton is studied by onresonant and off-resonant photoluminescences. The two main contributions to the linewidth are caused by radiative loss and phonon scattering. The oscillator strength is found to be unmodified by the exciton-phonon coupling. Comparison is made between theory and experiment.

Notes: We have demonstrated a technique of directly measuring the exciton binding energy and the valence band split in the quantum well through a tunneling process. We have also measured the emission efficiency of quantum well heavy-hole excitons and light-hole excitons into the normal direction. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Measurements in a semiconductor microcavity reveal the coupling between light- and heavy-hole excitons that is mediated by the electromagnetic vacuum. Three polariton modes constructed from superpositions of heavy-hole excitons, light-hole excitons, and photons are observed. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory of three-coupled bosonic modes, each coupled to an independent reservoir. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed the dressed-exciton oscillating emission in the time domain and the associated spectral splitting in the frequency domain from a GaAs single quantum well microcavity over a very broad range of cavity resonant wavelengths. The spectral splitting and temporal oscillation period have been measured to be nearly constant over two orders of magnitude variation of pump intensity, which confirms the linear bosonic feature of Wannier excitons in the weak excitation regime. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The standard quantum limit is calculated for the atom-light interferometer. It is shown that the smallest detectable phase is $$\delta \phi _{\min } = \frac{1}{2}[N_{atoms} + 4N_{photons} )/N_{atoms} N_{photons} ]^{1/2} .$$ Therefore, in practical experiments, the accuracy is limited by the square root of the number of atoms. We propose a novel correlated atom-photon state interferometer which makes a transition to the Heisenberg limit, δφmin ∝ 1/N atoms, as the atoms approach a Bose condensate. Such an interferometer may serve as a sensitive probe of the onset of Bose condensation. Finally, we point out that the correlated atom-photon state preparation scheme we propose may be used in a different way to approach the Heisenberg limit for non-Bose-condensed atoms.

Notes: Abstract The principle and applications of quantum electrodynamics in microcavity semi-conductor lasers are reviewed. The coupling efficiency of spontaneous emission into a lasing mode and the spontaneous lifetime are modified by various microcavity structures. As a consequence of the increased coupling efficiency, those microcavity semi-conductor lasers are expected to feature a low threshold current, high quantum efficiency and broad modulation bandwidth. One remarkable result of the increased coupling efficiency is ‘lasing without inversion’. The other is ‘intensity squeezing at any pump rate’.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A modified baby plate is used in the treatment of new born children with cleft lip and palate. In order to avoid tissue damage of the vomer and to achieve a maximal growth effect the cleft region is left free of acrylic. Retention of the plate is attained through the use of proprietary denture adhesive. To avoid undesirable breathing disturbances the plate is extended progressively into the soft palate region.

Notes: Abstract: We examine the problem of efficiently collecting the photons produced by solid-state single photon sources. The extent of the problem is first established with the aid of simple physical concepts. Several approaches to improving the collection efficiency are then examined and are broadly categorized into two types. First are those based on cavity quantum dynamics, in which the pathways by which the source may emit a photon are restricted, thus channeling emission into one desired mode. Second are those where we try to reshape the free space modes into a target mode in an optimal way, by means of refraction, without fundamentally altering the way in which the source emits. Respectively, we examine a variety of microcavities and solid immersion lenses. Whilst we find that the micropillar microcavities offer the highest collection efficiency (∼70%), choosing this approach may not always be appropriate due to other constraints. Details of the different approaches, their merits and drawbacks are discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract: In an interferometer, path information and interference visibility are incompatible quantities. Complete determination of the path will exclude any possibility of interference, rendering zero visibility. However, it is, under certain conditions, possible to trade the path information for improved (conditioned) visibility. This procedure is called quantum erasure. We have performed such experiments with polarization-entangled photon pairs. Using a partial polarizer, we could vary the degree of entanglement between the object and the probe. We could also vary the interferometer splitting ratio and thereby vary the a priori path predictability. This allowed us to test quantum erasure under a number of different experimental conditions. All experiments were in good agreement with theory.
