    Notes: A comparison of phenomenological features of plasmas is made with a special emphasis on radio-frequency induced transport, which are maintained when a set of two closely spaced dual half-turn antennas in a central cell of the Phaedrus-B axisymmetric tandem mirror [J. J. Browning et al., Phys. Fluids B 1, 1692 (1989)] is phased to excite electromagnetic fields in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) with m=−1 (rotating with ions) and m=+1 (rotating with electrons) azimuthal modes. Positive and negative electric currents are measured to flow axially to the end walls in the cases of m=−1 and m=+1 excitations, respectively. These parallel nonambipolar ion and electron fluxes are observed to be accompanied by azimuthal ion flows in the same directions as the antenna-excitation modes m. The phenomena are argued in terms of radial particle fluxes due to a nonambipolar transport mechanism [Hojo and Hatori, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 60, 2510 (1991); Hatakeyama et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 60, 2815 (1991), and Phys. Rev. E 52, 6664 (1995)], which are induced when azimuthally traveling ICRF waves are absorbed in the magnetized plasma column. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Better carrier confinement in 0.6-μm-band laser diodes can be achieved by incorporating an AlInP layer into the (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P cladding layers. The effectiveness of this heterostructure, though, cannot be analyzed without detailed knowledge of the energy band alignment at the Xc, Γc, and Γv band extrema. We conducted photoluminescence and photoreflectance measurements at 12–100 K on (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P/AlxIn1−xP heterostructures (x=0.47–0.61) free from long-range ordering, and analyzed the results to obtain basic data on the alignment scheme. In these measurements we observed the Γc to Γv and the Xc to Γv transitions in bulk Al0.53In0.47P and (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P alloys, the AlxIn1−xP Xc to (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P Γv transition in (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P/AlxIn1−xP superlattices, and the Xc to Γv and to the Γc to Γv transitions in 20-nm-wide AlxIn1−xP layers in (AlyGa1−y)0.5In0.5P/AlxIn1−xP/(AlyGa1−y)0.5In0.5P double heterostructures (x=0.33–0.39, y=0.7–1.0). We found that the energy level of Xc in AlxIn1−xP decreased by 0.09 eV as x increased from 0.47 to 0.61, the Xc of AlxIn1−xP crossed the Γc at 0.340 (±0.008), and the Γv of AlxIn1−xP crossed the Γv of (Al0.7Ga0.3)0.5In0.5P at x=0.47(±0.01). The share of the band offset at Γc for x=0.53 was 75(±3)%. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Among the proposed magnetically induced super resolution media, double-mask rear aperture detection (RAD) has the greatest potential for use in high-density land/groove recording.1 We proposed a trilayer double-mask RAD media that does not require a large initializing magnetic field.2 In this paper, we report the land/groove recording on the trilayer media for a 0.4 μm mark length and 0.7 μm track pitch. We found that crosstalk drastically changed depending on the direction of the readout magnetic field, and that the crosswrite is related to crosstalk. When applying the readout magnetic field in the erasing direction, the value of crosstalk was about −25 dB and a large crosswrite effect was observed. Conversely, the crosstalk was below −45 dB and no crosswrite effect was observed when applying the magnetic field in the writing direction. CNRs had almost the same value of 48 dB for both the above cases. To investigate the mask formation while applying the readout field in the writing direction, we precisely observed the wave form of the isolated marks. The carrier level rose twice with increasing readout field. However, the position of the leading edge mainly changed when increasing the field. We think that the low crosstalk is attributable to the enhancement of the front mask area. The trilayer media enables an areal density of 3 Gbit/in.2 © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We performed indirect immunofluorescence (IF) studies using 1 mol/1 sodium chloride split skin to determine whether or not a positive IF is specific to patients with bullous lupus erythematosus (LE). We examined the sera from 21 patients with systemic LE (SLE), three of which were obtained from two SLE patients and one subacute cutaneous LE (SCLE) patient with bullous eruptions. As a comparison, we also studied the sera from patients with discoid LE (DLE,n= 7). SCLE (n= 1), systemic sclerosis (SSc, n= 20), bullous pemphigoid (n= 2) and normal individuals (n= 10). Sera from 16 SLE, four DLE and two SSc revealed a linear deposition of IgG isotype antibody at the epidermal side and/or the dermal side on indirect IF of split skin. The sera from three patients with bullous eruption and from 12 patients of SLE, SCLE, DLE without bullous eruption or SSc were further analysed by immunoblotting using five defined antigens, i.e, dermal extract, epidermal extract, three fusion proteins of 230 kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen (BPAG), 180 kDa BPAG, and human epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) antigen. Two SLE sera as well as one of the SCLE and the DLE serum reacted with 230 kDa BPAG in epidermal extract, and one of the SCLE and the DLE serum also reacted with the fusion protein of 180 kDa BPAG, No serum reacted with the dermal extract or the fusion protein of 230 kDa BPAG or EBA antigen. There was no consistent correlation between split–skin IF results and immunoblotting results. These results may suggest that even non–bullous LE patients often have autoantibodies to the basement membrane zone antigens, most of which are less pathogenic. Although we rarely examine the sera from non–bullous LE patients, we should keep this phenomenon in mind to avoid overestimating the results of split–skin test and immunoblotting.

    Notes: Two molecular mechanisms of T/natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity, one perforin based and the other Fas based, have been demonstrated, and both systems induce cytotoxicity in the target cells. The Fas-based mechanism involves the transducing molecule Fas and its ligand (FasL). In addition, perforin and/or FasL are also expressed in the cytotoxic T/NK cells. This study was thus designed to investigate the Fas and perforin pathways of the cytotoxic T/NK lymphoma cells in the nasal cavity.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and results:Eight patients with nasal lymphoma were analysed using immunohistochemical staining methods. Two cases were CD3+ CD56+ (T/NK cell) type, and six were CD3− CD56+ (NK cell) type. All cases showed Epstein–Barr virus genomes by in-situ hybridization. In addition, all cases showed the expression of TIA-1 (GMP-17), which is a marker of cytotoxic T and NK cells. FasL was expressed in the majority of the lymphoma cells and some histiocytes, while Fas was found in lymphoma cells and many non-neoplastic cells. In addition, the expression of perforin was detected in almost all lymphoma cells. In the double stainings, lymphoma cells expressed both FasL and perforin. Based on these findings, both the perforin- and Fas-based pathway of the cytotoxic T/NK lymphoma cells are thus considered to play an important role in the clinical features.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Tissue damage is a common morphological feature in nasal T/NK cell lymphoma. The above findings therefore support the theory that tissue damage is due to both the cytotoxicity of T/NK lymphoma cells as well as to angiocentricity.

    Notes: In the course of the development of the YB66 004 monochromator for soft-X-ray spectroscopy in the 1–2 keV region, two positive glitches at 1385.6 and 1438 eV have been observed in the transmission function of this material in a double-crystal configuration. The nature of these glitches has been elucidated using a combination of photoemission experiments, reflectivity measurements and anomalous scattering calculations. Analyses of these results show that these positive glitches are due to the transmission at an energy 3/2 times higher than the 004 reflection and correspond to the yttrium LIII and LII absorption edges at 2080 and 2156 eV, respectively. Reflectivity measurements and structure-factor calculations for the 006 reflection confirm that these glitches are caused by the sharp reflectivity increases associated with anomalous scattering for the 006 reflection at the yttrium LIII and LII absorption edges.

    Notes: We investigated the co-localization of lysosomal cathepsins B, H and L, and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in junctional epithelial (JE) cells both as a fluid-phase endocytotic marker to demonstrate the fluid-phase endocytotic capacity of JE cells, and to understand the morphological relationships of the endocytosed foreign substances to lysosomal cathepsins in these cells. The diaminobenzidine (DAB) histochemical and cytochemical methods and immunohistochemical avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex and immunocytochemical post-embedding colloidal gold methods were used. Under light microscopy, DAB reaction products based on HRP were found in JE but were rare or absent in the oral sulcular epithelium and oral epithelium. Immunolabeling for cathepsins B and H was found in the granular structures of the cells, but no cathepsin L was identified. With electron microscopy, DAB reaction products, which indicated both HRP and the azurophil granules of neutrophils, were endocytosed into JE cells. Using a post-embedding technique, gold particles indicating HRP were present on the plasma membrane of JE cells, at the periphery of electronlucent vacuoles, and in the electrondense granules. Gold particles indicating cathepsin B or H were found in the electrondense granules. With different sizes of colloidal golds, the co-localization of cathepsin B or H with HRP was indicated only in the electrondense portion of the larger vacuoles consisting of electronlucent and -dense parts. This study provided the first morphological data which indicate that JE has a fluid phase endocytotic capacity, and which suggest that the lysosomal cathepsins B and H are involved in the intracellular degradation of foreign substances invading through the gingivl sulcus in JE cells.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper several modern shock-capturing schemes for solving hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic equations are reviewed. This review covers a wide range of explicit and implicit schemes as well as those in which adaptive mesh refinement methods are adopted. As these numerical schemes are based on Riemann solvers which use Godunov-type techniques, they are well suited for strong shocks and other discontinuities without oscillations in the flow variables. Some other numerical issues as grid generation, divergence cleaning, and an application of MHD schemes to several problems in coronal and interplanetary physics are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract To identify the α1-adrenoceptor subtypes in the human prostatic urethra, we compared the potencies of various α1-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists in inhibiting [3H]tamsulosin binding to human prostatic urethral membranes with their potencies in inhibiting the binding of (+)-β-([125I]iodo-4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylaminomethyl-tetralone ([125I]HEAT) to cloned human α1a, α1b and α1d subtypes. The α1A-selective antagonists 5-methylurapidil and (+)niguldipine showed higher affinities for both cloned α1a and urethral α1-adrenoceptors than for cloned α1b- and α1d-adrenoceptors. NS-49, (R)-3′-(2-amino-1-hydroxyethyl)-4′-fluoromethanesulfonanilide hydrochloride, recently characterized as an α1A-selective agonist, also showed high affinity for the cloned α1a subtype and urethral α1-adrenoceptors. Prazosin showed lower affinity for α1-adrenoceptors in the human prostatic urethra than for any of the three cloned α1-adrenoceptors. Comparison of the affinities of α1-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists for human prostatic urethral α1-adrenoceptors to their affinities for the three cloned α1 subtypes indicated a close correlation between the affinities for human urethral α1 and the cloned α1a-adrenoceptors. However, prazosin did not conform to this pattern. These findings suggest that the predominant α1-adrenoceptor in the human urethra is the α1A subtype, and that an α1L subtype which has been characterised by its low affinity for prazosin, may also be present.
