Notes: Abstract. Background: To describe computed tomographic (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), ultrasonographic (US), and angiographic findings of retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma with emphasis on CT findings. Methods: Five CT, four US, four angiography, and two MR studies were obtained in five patients with pathologically proven retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma. Results: Tumors were larger than 10 cm (n = 4), well-cimcumscribed and heterogeneous (n = 4), and with massive intratumorous calcifications (n = 3) on plain CT or US. Tumors showed heterogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT scans (n = 4) and moderate hypervascularity with heterogeneous staining on angiography (n = 3). Tumors were essentially hypointense on T1-weighted MR images (n = 2) and heterogeneous hyperintense on T2-weighted MR images (n = 2). Plain CT showed a fat-dense structure in a tumor in one patient. Conclusions: The radiologic findings of large expansile heterogeneous masses in the retroperitoneum, especially with massive calcifications, were considered to be typical of malignant mesenchymomas. Notes: Abstract We report a child with relapsed acute lymphocytic leukaemia in whom cytoplasmic granules were present in the leukaemic cells of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) but not in those of the bone marrow (BM). The leukaemic cells of the BM were of B-cell lineage whereas those of the CSF had both B-cell and myeloid antigens.

Notes: Abstract A recent report demonstrated that t(8;16) (p11;p13) may be linked to acute monocytic leukaemia (AMoL) of differentiated subtype (M5b) with active haemophagocytosis by leukaemic cells. Only two cases of neonatal AMoL with t(8;16)(p11;p13) have been reported; M5b with haemophogocytosis and M5a. We report a case of neonatal AMoL (M5b) with t(8;16)(p11;p13), but haemophagocytosis by the leukaemic cells was not detected.

Notes: Summary A case of centronuclear myopathy is presented, showing a rapid course in a 47-year-old male. Clinical and muscular findings were consistent with the diagnosis of centronuclear myopathy. On nerve biopsy, there was evidence of a regenerative process. Electron microscopy showed proliferation of Schwann cells with numerous Büngner's bands and other anomalies. This rare case with peripheral nerve changes may provide evidence to support the hypothesis of peripheral nerve involvement in centronuclear myopathy.

Notes: Abstract To identify the α1-adrenoceptor subtypes in the human prostatic urethra, we compared the potencies of various α1-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists in inhibiting [3H]tamsulosin binding to human prostatic urethral membranes with their potencies in inhibiting the binding of (+)-β-([125I]iodo-4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylaminomethyl-tetralone ([125I]HEAT) to cloned human α1a, α1b and α1d subtypes. The α1A-selective antagonists 5-methylurapidil and (+)niguldipine showed higher affinities for both cloned α1a and urethral α1-adrenoceptors than for cloned α1b- and α1d-adrenoceptors. NS-49, (R)-3′-(2-amino-1-hydroxyethyl)-4′-fluoromethanesulfonanilide hydrochloride, recently characterized as an α1A-selective agonist, also showed high affinity for the cloned α1a subtype and urethral α1-adrenoceptors. Prazosin showed lower affinity for α1-adrenoceptors in the human prostatic urethra than for any of the three cloned α1-adrenoceptors. Comparison of the affinities of α1-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists for human prostatic urethral α1-adrenoceptors to their affinities for the three cloned α1 subtypes indicated a close correlation between the affinities for human urethral α1 and the cloned α1a-adrenoceptors. However, prazosin did not conform to this pattern. These findings suggest that the predominant α1-adrenoceptor in the human urethra is the α1A subtype, and that an α1L subtype which has been characterised by its low affinity for prazosin, may also be present.

Notes: Abstract We report clinical characteristics and CT and MRI in 16 patients with brain metastases due to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Eight of these 16 patients presented with apoplexy-like symptoms (50 %). Pulmonary metastases were found in 13 cases (81.3 %). The mean survival from the appearance of cerebral metastases to death was 6.2 weeks, which is one of the shortest survival terms in metastatic brain tumours. Haemorrhagic brain metastases were observed in 14 patients (87.5 %) with a tendency for the frequency of bleeding to increase in proportion to the size of the tumour. On both contrast-enhanced CT and MRI, metastatic brain tumours enhanced strongly, suggesting that brain metastases, like HCC, are also hypervascular. MRI is useful in evaluating brain metastases from HCC, especially in order to differentiate tumour from haemorrhage. Our results demonstrated a poor prognosis and bleeding tendency of brain metastases due to HCC and showed the usefulness of CT and MRI in achieving a correct diagnosis.
