Notes: An in-vacuum minipole (short period) insertion device has been developed in a collaboration between SPring-8 and the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS). The magnetic arrays were assembled, field measured, corrected, and vacuum tested by SPring-8 and were installed in an NSLS-developed chamber with mechanical parts in the NSLS X-Ray Ring (E=2.584 GeV) in May 1997 and a successful commissioning of the device was carried out in June 1997. The device is made of permanent magnets with 30.5 periods and a period length of 11 mm. It is designed to produce fundamental radiation at 4.6 keV, and with a modest value of deflection parameter (K=0.7 at 3.3& mm gap) enables higher harmonics to be used as well, for a variety of experiments. A detailed description of the mechanical support and vacuum chamber will be reported elsewhere. We describe technical challenges encountered in constructing this type of device, and present an outline of our collaboration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectrum of molecular oxygen has been studied between 18 and 24 eV using the penetrating field technique and a synchrotron radiation source. Nine ionic states are observed, and three of them for the first time. Higher vibrational levels of the b 4Σg− state and the 2Φu state are also studied. Furthermore, the doublet structure of the 2Φu state is resolved for the first time. Two new states with quartet multiplicity are assigned to the 4Πg and the 4Πu states which dissociate to the limit, [O(3P)+O+(2D)], at 22.059 eV. Also we tentatively assign another newly observed band to the 2Πu state. The long vibrational progression of the 3 2Πu state is clearly observed in the region 22.3–23.8 eV with doublet splitting which increases with increasing of the vibrational quantum number. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Threshold photoelectron–photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) spectra of ArKr were measured between the ionization threshold and 16.0 eV by using the penetrating field technique and synchrotron radiation. The ground state (X 1/2 state) vibrational progression of ArKr+ was observed from v′=2 to 27 and the first ionization energy was estimated to be 108 703±12 cm−1 by extrapolation to v′=0. The other excited states constructed from the ground state atom and ion were also observed. The ionization energies to the A1 3/2, A2 1/2, C1 3/2, B 1/2, and C2 1/2 states from the neutral ground state were 112 274, 117 388, 126 211, 126 614, and 127 952 cm−1, respectively. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Most of the SPring-8 insertion devices are in-vacuum undulators except for the soft X-ray devices and one elliptical wiggler. The standard-type SPring-8 in-vacuum undulator has a period of 32 mm and a minimum gap of 8 mm. The fundamental radiation energy ranges from 5.2 to 18.5 keV. Three standard in-vacuum undulators are already installed in the ring and are operating without any problems. The magnetic field correction, the vacuum system and the commissioning of the in-vacuum undulators are described in this paper.

Notes: Abstract We discuss here some of the new aspects about solar flares and active regions found by the Solar X-ray Satellite Yohkoh, by taking advantage of the wider dynamic range and higher cadence observations with higher spatial resolution compared with the previous satellites. Those new aspects have lead us to new ways of understandings, with contradictions to the previous views about flares and active regions that are widely conceived for a long time. We give some models that explain those newly revealed observational results.

Notes: Abstract: The lifetime of the first 2+ state in the nucleus 124Ba has been measured by γ-γ coincidence recoil-distance Doppler shift method. The 109Ag(19F, 4n)124Ba reaction at a beam energy of 75 MeV was employed to populate excited states in 124Ba. The mean lifetime was determined to be 275(12) ps using the differential decay curve method. The value of B(E2;01 +→ 21 +) for 124Ba deduced from the lifetime is in reasonable agreement with the prediction of the proton-neutron interacting boson model(IBM-2) without Pauli blocking effect.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this report was to analyze the patients requiring preoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as the most critical group of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and to identify any special features. Over the past 11 years, out of 72 neonates with CDH admitted before 24 h of age, 40 (56%) could be managed with conventional therapies while the other 32 (44%) required ECMO. Seventeen infants requiring preoperative ECMO were classified as group 1, and the 15 with postoperative ECMO as group 2 (controls). The records of patients in both groups were analyzed. Patients in group 1 were not only severely hypoxic, but also significantly hypercapneic on admission, and in 14 (82%) the diaphragmatic defect was so large or totally agenetic that a prosthetic patch was necessary. The average age at onset of ECMO in group 1 was 13.1 h, and the average duration was 159 h. Major hemorrhagic complications including intracranial hemorrhage occurred with a significantly higher frequency in group 1. The survival rate in group 1 was 41%, compared with 73% in group 2 and 85% in non-ECMO patients. Four infants in group 1 with extremely hypoplastic lungs could not be weaned from ECMO, and died without undergoing an operation. Moreover, 4 of the 7 survivors in group 1 required prolonged (105–658 days) ventilator care with a tracheostomy after weaning from ECMO, and were frequently hospitalized thereafter. The pulmonary function of these patients remained severely underdeveloped for a long time; indeed, the average pulmonary perfusion ratio of the affected side remained at only 40% of the contralateral side in group 1, although the volume ratio reached 85%. These findings may suggest that the main pathology of the patients requiring preoperative ECMO was a high degree of pulmonary hypoplasia, and that there will be limitations to management using ECMO.

Notes: Before the commissioning of SPring-8, the in-vacuum hybrid undulator developed at SPring-8 had been brought to the ESRF for the first beam test in the summer of 1996. The purpose of this test was to investigate the influence of the in-vacuum undulator on the beam and check its vacuum system. However, heating by the resistive wall impedance turned out to be a critical issue for the in-vacuum undulators.

Notes: There are several ways of producing circularly polarized light, such as using asymmetric devices, crossed undulators etc. The SPring-8 helical undulator introduces a simple way of producing both horizontal and vertical fields in one undulator. All the magnet arrays are arranged above and below the plane of the electron orbit, so there is no limitation of access from the sides of the undulator. For the SPring-8 BL25SU, two helical undulators will be installed in tandem, and the helicity of the polarization can be switched at up to 10 Hz using five kicker magnets.

Notes: Summary  The neural activity pattern of the subthalmic nucleus (STN) was investigated in five patients with Parkinson's disease who were scheduled for electrode implantation for chronic stimulation of the STN.  The initial target was placed 8 mm or 10 mm lateral to the midline, 3 mm to 4 mm posterior to the midcommissural point, and 5 mm to 6 mm below the intercommissural (AC-PC) line. The STN was identified by semi-microelectrode recordings with a trajectory moving laterally in 2-mm steps. The amplitudes of multi-unit activities were relatively low at depths from 8 mm to 5 mm above and from 1 mm to 4 mm below the target, while those 4 mm to 0 mm above the target were significantly higher than at the other sites (ANOVA, Fisher's test, p〈0.05), with the highest amplitude at 2 mm above the target (91.0±23.3μv, n=15). In the mediolateral direction, amplitudes were relatively higher in the lateral portion, and amplitudes at 14 mm lateral to the midline were significantly higher than at the other sites (ANOVA, Fisher's test, p〈0.05). The target for chronic electrical stimulation was determined to be at the midpoint of the hyperactive STN, i.e., 12 mm lateral to the midline in three patients and 13 mm lateral in two patients. Movement-related neural activity was observed at 5 sites, i.e., 3 sites responded to passive movement of the contralateral wrist and 2 sites to passive knee and/or ankle movement.  In conclusion, our data show that the lateral part of the STN is hyperactive in PD, and recordings of neural activities contributed greatly to identifying the STN and determining the target for chronic stimulation within it.
