Notes: We previously reported that nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) micro imaging detected the hollows in cooked rice but required a specialist to operate equipment. Convenient detection of hollows is useful in the characterization of cooked rice. X-ray imaging and light transmittance photography were studied as alternatives to NMR micro imaging. X-ray imaging detected about 50% of all hollows. Light transmittance photography detected almost all hollows in cooked rice (Oryza sativa cv. Koshihikari) effectively and rapidly, relatively quantifying hollow sizes and numbers.

Notes: Nondestructive analysis of water distribution and structural changes in cooked rice grains, Oryza sativa cv Koshihikari, was performed with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Micro imaging of protons (1H). Using a specially designed holder, high quality images of cooked rice grains were obtained, even when up to 10 grains were studied simultaneously. Internal hollows were observed in all examined cooked rice grains, and we propose a mechanism to explain their formation. The origin of these hollows was hypothesized to be cracks or fissures, and hollows resulted from sealing of such lacerations by gelatinized starch in the peripheral layer in combination with expansion of the grain during cooking.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the water mass distribution and circulation in Tachibana Bay, which is located in the junction area between Ari-ake Sound and Amakusa-Nada in western Kyushu, Japan. This was done to clarify the mechanism by which ghost shrimp larvae, originating from a sandflat of Amakusa-Shimoshima Island, are transported. Temperature and salinity data repeatedly obtained over the area of Tachibana Bay show that relatively low salinity water lies over northern part of the bay, while high salinity water lies over southern part of the bay. The location of the low salinity water margin tends to depend on the amount of rainfall several days before the observation. A large amount of rainfall makes a clear boundary between low and high salinity waters. Current velocity data indicate an eastward mean flow just north of Tomioka, northern tip of Amakusa-Shimoshima Island, and a clockwise mean flow approaching the Tomioka Bay sandflat, which should be suitable for the on-shore transport of the ghost shrimp postlarvae. Current measurements with shipboard ADCP just west of Hayasaki Strait, at the entrance of Ari-ake Sound, show that a westward tidal residual current tends to incline to the north, with evidence of a density current in the northern part of the western Hayasaki Strait.

Notes: Abstract Results for low temperature specific heat for single crystals of ladder/chain materials Sr 14−x Ca x Cu 24 O 41 (x= 0, 8, 10, 11.5) in magnetic field up to ∼15 T are reported. A sharp peak of the specific heat of a single crystal Sr 2.5 Ca 11.5 Cu 24 O 41, was found at ∼ 2.3 K, clearly indicating the onset of a long range order. In measurements of the specific heat in magnetic fields the transition temperature, T N , was found to shift to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field, indicating that the ordering is antiferromagnetic, which has been confirmed by neutron scattering measurements. With decreasing x T N rapidly shifts to lower temperatures. For x=10 T N decreases to ∼ 1 K and for x= 0 no anomaly indicating the transition was found down to ∼ 0.6K

Notes: Abstract In La214, the electronic specific heat coefficient γ (=C el /T) is gradually suppressed with lowering T below a certain temperature T* (〉 T c ), where the in-plane resistivity ρ and magnetic susceptibility χ also tend to be suppressed slightly. Temperature T*, increasing with lowering x, is in qualitative agreement with the mean field T c (T co ), estimated from the superconducting gap amplitude 2Δ o at T ≪ T c , as the onset temperature T* of a pseudogap in Bi2212. The gradual suppression of γ below ∼ T co implies that a pseudogap will also open up below ∼ T co in La214 as in Bi2212. In underdoped samples, whose pseudogap-like behaviors in C el(T) become marked, the anomaly of C el around T c is rather different from the BCS expectation.
