Notes: Abstract. We give a linear-time algorithm for computing the medial axis of a simple polygon P . This answers a long-standing open question—previously, the best deterministic algorithm ran in O(n log n) time. We decompose P into pseudonormal histograms, then influence histograms, then xy monotone histograms. We can compute the medial axes for xy monotone histograms and merge to obtain the medial axis for P .

Notes: Abstract A chemically modified carbon paste electrode was prepared by incorporating appropriate amounts of sodium humate(NaA). Palladium(II) was selectively accumulated in a solution of Britton-Robinson(B-R) buffer (pH 2.8) onto the electrode surface in open circuit mode. The subsequent electrochemical measurement was carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) in a supporting electrolyte of 1.0 M HCl. The obtained oxidation currents (Ipa1 and Lpa2) were proportional to the Pd(II) concentration in the range of 4.7 × 10–6 - 9.4 × 10–8 M. The developed method was applied to the quantitative determination of palladium in real samples.

Notes: Abstract. We report on optically controlled image storage based on photo-induced alignment in azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymer films. Measurements reveal that the polymer film possesses photo-induced birefringence of large magnitude and the characteristic of long-term optical storage. The photo-induced alignment process is used for storing images. The stored image is read from the film placed between two crossed polarizers. It is demonstrated clearly that the alignment of the azo chromophores as well as the stored image can be easily controlled by choosing the appropriate polarization of the irradiating light or by rotating the film.

Notes: Abstract The effectiveness of single and multiple applications of triple dye for umbilical cord care in the umbilical cord separation time (UCST) was evaluated in 180 neonates. Seven neonates were excluded, three where the cord stump separation time was uncertain and four to whom contact was lost. The participating neonates were randomly assigned to two groups. Group 1, 101 neonates, were treated with a regimen of a single application of triple dye. Group 2, 79 neonates, were treated with multiple applications of triple dye. Complete information was obtained from 97 neonates (96.2%) in group 1 and 76 (96%) in group 2. The UCST was 12.6 ± 0.45 (mean ± SE) days in group 1 and 16.68 ± 0.65 days in group 2 (P 〈 0.0001) and showed no significant association with infants' gender, mode of delivery, gravidity, gestational age, birth weight, or hospital stay. Conclusion A single application of triple dye may be a more favourable regimen with a similarly antimicrobial effect, a shorter UCST and may be more cost effective than multiple applications of triple dye in umbilical cord care.

Notes: Purification was by electroelution from native polyacrylamide gels or by sequential use of three columns. Electroelution was faster and resulted in a higher yield (23.4 vs 1.6%) than column purification. The enzyme had a molecular mass of 187 kDa, and the isoelectric point ranged from 5.4 to 6.0. ALP purified by electroelution was used as the antigen to immunize rabbits for polyclonal antibody (PAb) production. Western blot analysis showed that PAbs cross-reacted with bovine milk and placenta ALP, but did not cross-react with ALP from calf or bovine intestinal mucosa, Escherichia coli or with other milk proteins.

Notes: The experimental setup used to perform hyper-Rayleigh scattering at the near infrared wavelength of 1907 nm is described. The setup described is employed to measure the first molecular hyperpolarizabilities, β, of three new thiophene-based nonlinear optical chromophores. Although scattering at this wavelength is weak and the experiment requires great care, use of it allows one to obtain near dispersion-free first hyperpolarizability. Comparing the results with those obtained on the same chromophores using the 1064 nm excitation, we show that the two state model, which is commonly used to relate the β values at different wavelengths, fails to correlate the results at these two excitation wavelengths. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Three types of retainers (wrought wire clasp, Aker's cast clasp, and conical crown telescopic retainer) designed for distal-extension removable partial dentures (RPDs) were assessed in two Kennedy class I patients’ mouths. The assessment, included the ratio of denture base shearing load and mobility of the terminal abutments when loaded on a free-end RPD occlusal surface. The mean values of denture base shearing ratios of wrought wire clasp, Aker's clasp and conical crown telescope were 60, 42 and 20%, respectively. The abutment mobility of the three types of retainers were all within the ‘mobile ability area’ except the wrought wire clasp for patient A's right side. The greatest tooth mobility was observed with the wrought wire clasps, followed by Aker's clasp and the conical crown telescopic retainer. From the analysis the following was concluded: (i) different retainers do influence the occlusal load distribution; (ii) the occlusal load distributed to the free-end saddle is closely related to the connecting rigidity of the retainer; (iii) mucosal support has an indispensable role in sharing the occlusal load with various retainers, even the rigid telescopic retainer.
