Notizen: Background: This study highlights the allergenicity and allergenic components of the pollen of Phoenix sylvestris Roxb. (PS), or date sugar palm, which is predominantly airborne in the air of Greater Calcutta. Methods: A 2-year aerobiologic survey was performed by Burkard sampler. PS pollen extract was used in skin tests of allergic patients, fractionated by (NH4)2SO4 and the SephacrylS-200 column. The allergenicity of each fraction was checked by skin test and IgE ELISA inhibition. The principal allergenic fraction, Fr.IIa, was separated in 11% SDS–PAGE, and its allergenicity was confirmed by IgE ELISA inhibition and immunoblotting. Results: PS pollen grains were found to be prevalent in the air of the suburban zone of Calcutta from January to March with a peak in February. The pollen extract showed high (44.07%) positive skin reaction on 540 respiratory allergic patients. Among the (NH4)2SO4 cut fractions, Fr.II was the most active one, and it was resolved into four subfractions in the Sephacryl S-200 column. Fr.IIa was the principal allergenic fraction, showing the presence of two components of 33 and 66 kDa in SDS–PAGE. In IgE immunoblotting, both of the components were found to be allergenic. Conclusions: The PS pollen grain is an important aeroallergen from Calcutta, India. The 33- and 66-kDa components are the major allergens present in the relevant pollen extract.

Notizen: Abstract The crystal structure of a unidecahydrated co-complex between two Inosine 5′-monophosphate (IMP) and one L-glutamine has been determined at atomic resolution by X-ray crystallographic methods. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P21 with cell dimensions a = 8.690(2), b = 21.900(3), c = 12.370(1) Å, and β = 110.59(3)°. This structure reveals the recognition mechanism of glutamine to the nucleotide through direct and water-mediated hydrogen bonds. The phosphate oxygen (O23) seems to prefer the nonspecific interaction with the functional sites of glutamine (NA· · ·O23 = 2.672, OH· · ·O23 = 3.063, OE· · ·O23 = 3.104 Å), whereas the bases prefer specific (N23· · ·O = 2.874 Å) bindings. But here no specific interaction has been observed at N17 and N27, which were observed in serine—IMP complex. However, the solvent mediated N17· · ·OW3· · ·N27 hydrogen bonds for stabilization of the stacked purine bases have been observed as in other aminoacid-nucleotide cocrystals. The striking habit of glutamine to occupy the nearly same region of the nucleotide cocrystal as was found in the serine—IMP complex through substantial replacement of free and bound water molecules, shows certainly the cooperative hydrogen bonding economy of water molecules.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of dispersed paint particles on the mechanical properties of rubber toughened PP was investigated. The matrix was basically a hybrid of PP, rubber and talc. Model systems with spherical glass bead filled matrix were also studied to examine the effect of filler shape and size. Properties like tensile strength, strain at break, impact strength, and fracture toughness were influenced by the dispersed inclusions. Tensile strength at yield decreased linearly according to Piggott and Leinder's equation. Strain at break decreased more drastically with paint particles than glass beads, revealing that irregularly shaped particles offered greater stress concentrations. The tensile strength and strain at break were less influenced by the size of paint particles whereas a slight decrease in the modulus values was observed with decreasing particle size. Impact strength and fracture toughness also decreased with increasing filler fraction. Lack of stress transfer between filler and matrix aided in reduction of impact strength. Decrease in fracture toughness was influenced by volume replacement and constraints posed by fillers. The size of paint particles had little effect on the impact strength and fracture properties at the filler concentration levels used in this investigation.

Notizen: Abstract Agricultural activity in the Pushkar Valley, Rajasthan is constrained due to limited availability of good quality water. In this context, occurrence of nitrate and fluoride in the groundwater was investigated and reported. Integration of stable isotope (δ18O) data with recharge characteristics (based on 3H-tracer studies) helps in clearly characterizing the processes controlling contamination by point and non-point sources. High nitrate and fluoride groundwaters are associated with high δ18O waters. This indicates that significant quantities of evaporated (isotopically enriched) surface run-off water and rain water infiltrate along with nitrate and fluoride salts in the soil. The applicability of this approach under different hydrometeorological conditions is also confirmed.
