Notizen: Carbon–ion cancer treatment is successfully being made at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Design philosophy for the ion sources for medical facilities are as follows: (1) sufficient beam intensity, a few hundred e μA; (2) long lifetime with good stability; (3) easy operation and easy maintenance; and (4) compactness. In order to develop such source for future heavy-ion facilities, we have tested compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources using permanent magnets both for axial and radial confinement of hot electrons. Since the yield of C2+ ion in the first developed source (2.45 GHz ECR) was 15 e μA and far below the medical requirement (∼150 e μA for the HIMAC), a new source has been proposed, having a frequency of 10 GHz. The extracted intensity of C4+ (and C2+) ions is expected to be higher than 200 e μA. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In the present study, measurements of broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were used as indications of bone quality in elderly residents of an old people’s home. To investigate the possibility of using number of steps walked as an indicator of the role played by exercise on bone quality, we studied the relationship between BUA and the number of steps, taken as a measure of the number of impacts against the ground placing a direct mechanical stress on the bones. The subjects were 59 healthy elderly women with a mean age of 78±8 years who had no impairments in walking or daily life. A statistical analysis of the relationship between age, number of steps, BUA, stride length, and walking speed revealed that number of steps and BUA declined with age, and that BUA increased with a greater number of steps. Among other factors, age was found to be negatively correlated with weight (r=−0.343, P〈0.01), BUA (r=−0.542, P〈0.001), total number of steps (r=−0.524, P〈0.001) and past exercise habits (r=−0.425, P〈0.001). There were positive correlations between BUA and total number of steps (r=0.606, P〈0.001), walking speed (r=0.460, P〈0.001), stride length (r=0.373, P〈0.01) and past exercise habits (r=0.429, P〈0.001). These results show that the benefit to bone quality increases the more a person walks in daily life. The above demonstrates that degree of walking activity is positively correlated to bone quality among the elderly. These results also suggest that, when investigating the relationship between exercise and bone quality, one should look not only at distance and walking speed, but also number of steps as the number of impacts against the ground that place a direct mechanical stress on the bones. This may prove to be a useful indicator of bone quality in future use.

Notizen: We have performed the fs pump–probe experiment on the B˜→a˜ nonadiabatic transition in the Hg–CO vdW complex. It is found that the transition occurs near the point where Hg and CO come nearest to each other on the B˜-state surface with a probability of 0.07 for their single encounter. This experiment serves as the first observation of the wave packet dynamics associated with an intermolecular energy flow in the vdW interaction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Several evaluation methods for soybean chilling tolerance at the reproductive stage were examined under artificial climatic conditions. Comparisons were made on plants in control and treated plots using three cultivars differing in the level of chilling tolerance. In all methods, plants were grown at 22/17°C (day/night) until first flowering, and then transferred to growth chambers at 24/17°C for control and 15/15°C for chilling treatment, respectively. A method, in which plants were grown at 20/16°C after 4 weeks of the different temperature treatments, proved comparable to the conventional one, in which chilling tolerance at the flowering stage is evaluated using natural and artificial conditions. Another method, in which the plants in chilling treatment plots were grown at 15°C until maturity, also proved usable to evaluate genotypic differences in chilling tolerance independently of maturity time.

Notizen: Experiments on induced spawning of the anostomid fish Leporinus elongatus Val. 1849, an important neotropical migratory fish, were carried out at Três Marias Fish Hatchery Station, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to develop a reliable protocol for inducing breeding in this species. L. elongatus matures reliably in earthen ponds to a point at which final maturation can be induced with carp pituitary extract. The following data were recorded: number of extruded eggs (g ova−1) = 2444 ± 740; stripped ova weight:body weight = 13.1 ± 2.9%; retained (ovulated but not stripped) ova weight:body weight = 5.8 ± 2.6%; initial fertility = 318.7 × 103± 149.2 × 103; final fertility = 229.3 × 103± 129.3 × 103; egg fertilization rate = 63.8 ± 16.4% and ≈ 229 000 larvae per female. The relationships between stripping time and water temperature and between hatching and water temperature were given by the same exponential equation t= ae–bT. The relationships between body weight (Wt) and initial (IF) and final fertility (FF) were expressed by the equations: IF =−9382 + 322 047 × Wt (r2= 0.84); FF =−40 780 + 265 062 × Wt (r2= 0.75).

Notizen: Reproducible and quantitative evaluation of patient satisfaction with their complete dentures is of great importance for preoperative diagnosis, treatment planning and assessment of complete denture treatment outcome. This study attempted (1) to clarify the degree of contribution of various factors to overall satisfaction, and (2) to develop a method for quantitative assessment of overall satisfaction with complete dentures. Twelve satisfaction factors and a three-grade scale were used to assess 302 complete denture patients. The contribution of each grade of the 12 factors to the overall satisfaction level was determined by multiple regression analysis. Seven factors were highly correlated to the overall satisfaction. Based on the level of contribution by these seven significant factors, a scoring method for satisfaction was established. Category scores for these factors were calculated and the sum of the category scores was converted to an integer between 0 and 100. The resulting quantification score was closely correlated with overall satisfaction. A protocol for scoring overall satisfaction was developed based on the scientifically analysed contribution of each satisfaction factor.

Notizen: An I-bar clasp is a popular retainer for distal-extension removable partial dentures. However, there have been almost no evidence-based criteria on the mechanically preferable shape. The present study aimed to investigate the variations of dimension in I-bar clasps used in patients, and to clarify the effect of the variations on stiffness and stress of I-bar clasps by finite element analysis. Dimensions (thickness, width, taper, radius of curvature, length, relation to oral structures) of 23 I-bar clasps were measured. A three-dimensional finite element model was made for each measured I-bar clasp with vertical and horizontal straight sections connected with a curved section. A concentrated load of 5 N was applied at the lowest point of the tip that contacted the abutment in the buccal direction. Maximal equivalent stress and stiffness of each clasp were evaluated. The measured dimension, stiffness, and maximum stress showed wide variations. Mean stiffness was far from the proper one, and mean stress was near the proportional limit of Co–Cr alloy. Considering the stiffness and stresses in this study, only six clasps out of 23 were appropriate. These results suggest that evidence-based criteria of preferable shape of I-bar clasps should be determined.

Notizen: To gather knowledge related to establishing criteria for selecting soft denture liners for individual patients, the effects of certain properties of soft denture liners on stress distribution were evaluated by two-dimensional finite element analysis. A partial mandibular edentulous ridge crest was modelled. Six combinations of thickness (mucosa: 1 or 2 mm; soft denture liner: 1, 2, or 3 mm) and 18 combinations of Young's modulus (mucosa: three kinds; soft denture liner: six kinds) were analysed. The ratio of maximum to minimum stress in the mucosa (stress ratio) was calculated to estimate stress concentration. In the case of thin mucosa (1 mm thickness), the lower the Young's modulus of the soft denture liner, the lower the stress ratio. However, if the soft denture liner had a lower Young's modulus than the mucosa, stress concentrated adversely. These results suggest that the elasticity of the soft denture liner should match the elasticity of the mucosa to obtain the optimum cushioning effect.

Notizen: Double implants have been thought to have biomechanical advantages for single molar replacement. To evaluate the effectiveness of double implants versus a wide implant, the vertical forces and torque on each implant were calculated by three-dimensional geometric analysis. Buccal load (100 N) perpendicular to cuspal inclination (20°) was applied at the occlusal surface of the superstructure. The three kinds of load points (A, B, C) were 1·5, 3·5, and 5·5 mm from the mesial contact point, respectively. Three implants were compared: mesial and distal double implants (∅ 3·3 mm), and a wide implant (∅ 5 mm). The wide implant showed torque around the long axis (1·8–15·0 N · cm) whereas double implants had no torque. On the other hand, the vertical forces on the mesial double implant were both smaller (60%: loaded at point C) and larger (140%: loaded at point A) than the wide implant. Given the smaller surface area of the mesial double implant, this large force may generate much higher stress in the peri-implant bone. These results suggest that the biomechanical advantage of double implants for single molar replacement is questionable when the occlusal force is loaded at the occlusal surface near the contact point.
