    Notizen: A 3-year study was made on genetic variability of seed oil content and seed index with 20 wild species, two cultivated species and six perennial races of Gossypium arboreum cotton maintained at the Central Institute for Cotton Research, Nagpur, India. The mean seed oil content varied from 10.26 to 22.89% in 22 species of Gossypium and six races of G. arboreum. In this material the weight of delinted seed varied from 43.33 to 54.54 mg/seed. The highest seed oil content was recorded in the species G. lobatum followed by G. harknessii. On average, for both traits, the means were higher for G. arboreum and its races. However, G. africanum and G. harknessii reached the level of G. arboreum and its races for seed weight, while five wild species surpassed the best races and G. arboreum in seed oil content, among them was G. harknessii. To breed simultaneously for seed oil content and seed weight, crosses between races of G. arboreum and wild species of Gossypium seem to be promising.

    Notizen: In this paper a comprehensive model of current conduction in polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) based on the thermionic-emission-diffusion (TED) theory is developed, and on the basis of this model an expression for the effective majority carrier mobility μeff is derived. This expression is quite general in nature and some thermionic emission (TE) theory based expressions for μeff can be obtained from it straightaway under certain simplifying assumptions. In addition, it helps in understanding the physical significance of the scaling factor used by earlier workers to explain their experimental results. Also, the experimental data on Hall mobility, which we obtained under an ohmic conduction regime in the 300–440 K temperature range for dark and illuminated conditions in lightly doped n-type polysilicon samples of different grain sizes, are presented and are interpreted on the basis of the TED model. Under strong illumination, the Hall mobility μHL was observed to vary with temperature T according to the relation μHL=aT−b, where a depended on grain size and was found to be smaller for the smaller grain size. The dark mobility data fitted well into the TED-based expression for μeff considering the interface states associated with grain boundaries to be localized at Ev+0.63 eV in the band gap. The analysis reveals that, generally, the scaling factor is needed if the effect of diffusion is neglected in comparison with the thermionic emission while in essence it is appreciable to be considered. However, in the TED model, as diffusion contribution in controlling the current transport across the grain-boundary potential barrier is well taken care of, the scaling factor is not required.

    Notizen: The effect of purified mouse serum amyloid P-component (SAP) treatment of mouse alveolar macrophages (AMs) on their uptake of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Erdman was investigated, in vitro. SAP (0.5–50.0 µg/ml), in a concentration-dependent manner, inhibited the M. tuberculosis uptake by the AMs; maximum inhibition (33.43%) occurred at 10.0 µg/ml. The inhibition of uptake could be observed as early as 30 min after the incubation of AMs with 10.0 µg/ml SAP; however, an incubation of 60 min induced maximum inhibition beyond which the response became static. The SAP-mediated decreased uptake of M. tuberculosis also resulted in their reduced intramacrophage growth as determined by colony-forming unit counts. SAP inhibited the uptake of mycobacteria in the presence of Ca2+, and at pH = 5.6, the inhibition was abrogated. Deglycosylation of purified SAP with N-glycanase, and not with O-glycanase, blocked the SAP-mediated inhibition of the uptake. Heat-inactivated (80 °C; 1 h; pH 7.0) SAP did not inhibit the uptake of M. tuberculosis by AMs. These data, apparently for the first time, indicate that purified mouse SAP, in a divalent cation- and N-linked oligosaccharide glycosylation-dependent manner, inhibited the in vitro uptake of M. tuberculosis Erdman by mouse AMs, which was also associated with their reduced intracellular growth.

    Notizen: Background: Filariasis is an endemic problem in various Indian states. We evaluated the results of long-term follow up (10–20 years) of patients with filarial chyluria.Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 160 patients treated for filarial chyluria who presented to the Banaras Hindu University Hospital from 1982 to 1992. Eighty-four patients (52.5%) were treated using diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and a fat restricted diet and 76 patients (47.5%) underwent surgery. To examine the long-term effects of filarial chyluria we analysed data on post-treatment recurrence, weight gain, dietary freedom, chyluria free period and a number of other associated factors.Results: Previous history of filariasis or its complication was documented in 19% of patients. In 71% of cases, cystoscopy showed that chylous efflux was predominant in the left ureteric orifice. The long-term remission rate was 62% in the conservatively managed group (DEC + fat restricted diet), whereas 90% of patients in the operated group were cured. Postoperative recurrence rate was 10%. There was more weight gain and dietary freedom along with a longer chyluria free period in the operated group relative to the conservatively managed group.Conclusions: Definitive surgical ablation of lymphatic urinary fistula is better than conservative medical management because it has a higher success rate, more dietary freedom and, therefore, better patient acceptability.

    Notizen: Abstract Spontaneous emission rates and absorption oscillator strengths for prominent ΔV≤4 sequence bands of theB 2Σ+-A 2Πi transition of the CN molecule are estimated. The wavelengths of some lines observed in the coma spectrum of the comet Bradfield 1980t as well as in several comets coincide with these ΔV≤4 sequence LeBlanc bands of the CN radical. Formation and destruction of the CN radical in the coma of a comet are discussed in the framework of gas phase reactions.
