    Notes: α7 Nicotinic receptors are calcium permeant and provide neuroprotection against many insults. We investigated the roles of intracellular calcium ions and downstream calcium channels in this protection. The α7 agonist GTS-21 prevented pheochromocytoma cell death induced by nerve growth factor + serum deprivation over a 3-day interval. This effect was blocked by the intracellular calcium chelator 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid in a manner that did not appear to involve changes in receptor density. 1,2-Bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid blocked GTS-21-induced protein kinase C activation, a necessary process for protection. The insositol triphosphate calcium-channel blocker xestospongin C and the phospholipases C inhibitor U-73122 blocked protection, ryanodine partially attenuated protection, but the L-type channel antagonist nifedipine had no effect. ERK1/2 but not JNK and p38 were activated by GTS-21, and the ERK phosphorylation inhibitors PD98059 and U0126 blocked protection.

    Notes: Metoprolol, a widely prescribed β-adrenergic receptor blocker, has occasionally been associated with a diversity of cutaneous reactions. We present a 79-year-old male patient with erosive lichen planus (LP) on the feet and hands who was successfully treated with topical tacrolimus. Six months after the lesions had been cured the patient received the β-receptor blocker metoprolol for the treatment of hypertonus. Within only 2 weeks of metoprolol intake the erosive lesions on the palms and feet recurred. After discontinuation of the drug and repetitive topical treatment with tacrolimus a complete remission of the lesions could be achieved. The recurrence of erosive LP probably secondary to metoprolol and the therapeutic success of topical tacrolimus in the treatment of LP are discussed.

    Notes: Background:  Psychophysiological measurement of processes related to social behavior may be valuable for research on individual differences and subgroups among children with autism spectrum disorders (Coleman, 1987; Dawson, Klinger, Panagiotides, Lewy, & Castelloe, 1995; Modahl et al., 1998). In particular, recent research and theory suggests that measures of resting anterior EEG asymmetry reflect complex brain processes associated with individual differences in approach or avoidance motivation that may be associated with social and emotional interaction tendencies among children with autism.Method:  This hypothesis was examined in a study of the relations among resting anterior asymmetry, social impairment, and social anxiety in 23 high functioning children with autism (HFA) and 20 controls (age range 9–14 years).Results:  These groups were significantly different on the measures of anterior asymmetry, social symptoms and anxiety-related measures. Moreover, HFA children who displayed right frontal asymmetry (RFA group) displayed more symptoms of social impairments and better visual analytic skills than did children who displayed left frontal asymmetry (LFA group). Alternatively, while the LFA group displayed fewer symptoms of social impairment they also reported greater levels of social anxiety, social stress, and lower satisfaction with interpersonal relations than did the RFA group.Conclusions:  These observations indicate that anterior EEG asymmetry may be a marker of motivation and emotion processes that refract the autism taxon into important individual differences in social presentation among higher functioning children.

    Notes: Background:  Brain activation differences between 12 control and 12 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children (9- to 12-year-olds) were examined on two cognitive tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).Method:  Visual selective attention was measured with the visual search of a conjunction target (red triangle) in a field of distracters and response inhibition was measured with a go/no-go task.Results:  There were limited group differences in the selective attention task, with control children showing significantly greater intensity of activation in a small area of the superior parietal lobule region of interest. There were large group differences in the response inhibition task, with control children showing significantly greater intensity of activation in fronto-striatal regions of interest including the inferior, middle, superior and medial frontal gyri as well as the caudate nucleus and globus pallidus.Conclusion:  The widespread hypoactivity for the ADHD children on the go/no-go task is consistent with the hypothesis that response inhibition is a specific deficit in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

    Notes: The incidence of a drug-induced pancreatitis is rare and so far more than 85 different drugs have been reported to have induced pancreatitis. Some case reports consider a relationship between propofol and acute pancreatitis. However, in these cases a number of different drugs were coadministered, thus preventing a clear causal link being established. We report a case of a drug-induced acute pancreatitis that was most likely triggered by a single dosage of propofol. It occurred in a young girl who underwent elective magnetic resonance imaging. She developed pancreatitis within hours after exposure to propofol. Other possible triggers, e.g. gallstones or infection were ruled out. Physicians should consider pancreatitis as a potentially life-threatening adverse event associated with propofol sedation, which is nowadays extensively used.

    Notes: A case of spinal anesthesia in an extremely low birth weight male infant (body weight of 930 g at time of surgery) is presented. He was born prematurely at a gestational age of 27 weeks because of a placenta tumor and had to undergo inguinal herniotomy at 34 weeks postconceptional age. He had bronchopulmonary dysplasia and oxygen supply was still required because of frequent deterioration of oxygen saturation. Spinal anesthesia was performed successfully without any complications. Relevant aspects concerning the technique and management of spinal anesthesia in preterm infants are discussed.

    Notes: This article tracks public sector reform in Austria with a focus on the influence of New Public Management (NPM) both as label and as specific set of reform ideas. We analyse to what degree current reforms have been influenced and shaped by this widely acclaimed international trend. In this empirical study we combine the different data sources of media coverage, reform documents and public sector executive survey to cover different levels of analysis. Although the reforms include NPM-features, we see no evidence so far for an archetype change in the Austrian public sector.

    Notes: Do political elite operatives differ by party affiliation? This article explores the extent to which political differences between the parties are reflected in cultural differences among elite party actors. Using interviews of political operatives published in the National Journal's daily newsletter, the Hotline, we look at differences between the parties on political questions such as political heroes and favorite television news show, and more purely cultural questions including favorite magazines and music. The data suggest that differences between the parties do persist on cultural issues, and that Democrats retain more internal differences than Republicans. We conclude by calling for more research into party culture.
