Notes: Background  Apoptosis of malignant cells has been suggested as an important mechanism of the action of bexarotene in the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL).Objectives  Our purpose was to examine the in vivo and in vitro responses of patients with Sézary syndrome treated with oral bexarotene and assess them for apoptosis of the Sézary cells. Methods  Six patients with CTCL with circulating Sézary cells, participating in a clinical trial of oral bexarotene (300 mg m−2 daily) were included in the study. Peripheral blood from the patients was analysed for in vivo and in vitro apoptosis. Results  None of the six patients demonstrated in vivo apoptosis. In vitro apoptosis of Sézary cells was demonstrated in one patient following exogenous bexarotene. Conclusions  Apoptosis is not detectable in the circulation of patients with Sézary syndrome treated with bexarotene.

Notes: Summary It has been shown that the modification ofDarcys law as suggested bySrivastava andAbrol (1969) may not be generally valid. Instead, it is suggested that the flow of water through the clay-water system may be more properly described by an extension of theOnsager reciprocal relation involving non-linear phenomenological coefficients.

Notes: [Auszug] Liquid chromatography can now be performed in minutes rather than hours or days with a sensitivity and ease of operation previously associated only with gas chromatography. The new techniques promise to be of immense importance for the development of chemistry, biochemistry and ...

Notes: Abstract Heat flowing out of the core must flow into the mantle. If the Earth's magnetic field is owing to adiabatic magnetohydrodynamic circulation of the outer core, whole mantle convection or melting at the core mantle boundary is required to keep the inner core from becoming isothermal, thereby preventing adiabatic circulation. Alternatively, the outer core fluid must have some unexpected and exotic property such as an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion and resultant low Gruneisen's parameter.

Notes: Synopsis A new histochemical method is described for the polychromatic staining and identification of phospholipids and sulpholipids in tissue sections. It is an adaptation of a chromatographic method described previously (Kennedy & Collier, 1962). Sections are stained in a mixture of Diamond Sky Blue B, Diamond Cyanine R and formalin, followed by differentiation in 2-morpholinoethanol and bromine water, counterstaining in Cresyl Fast Violet and decolorization in lactic acid. The interpretation of the final colours in the test tissues was checked by extraction and chromatography of their lipid content. The staining of diverse animal and plant tissues is described and illustrated in colour.
