Notizen: We report a technique to characterize carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2 by measuring the Si 2p core-level energy of Si substrates covered with thin SiO2 layers as a function of x-ray irradiation time. It is found that the Si 2p peak energy, which corresponds to the band bending at the SiO2/Si interface, changes as the x-ray irradiation time increases. We attribute this to carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2. By using this technique, it is found that the carrier-trapping phenomena differ remarkably among several chemical oxides. We also discuss the atomic structure of the traps that cause the trapping phenomena. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Two distinct groups of female-specific proteins, vitellogenin (VTG) and vitelline envelope proteins (VEP), were detected in the blood of the porcupine fish Diodon holocanthus, and annual changes in concentration were measured immunochemically. Using antisera against yolk proteins (ab.a-E) and VEP (ab. a-VEP), VTG and VEP could be detected in the blood of maturing female fish and oestradiol-17β (E2)-treated fish. Neither protein was detected in the blood of male fish. Immunohistochemistry showed that yolk globules and the vitelline envelope enclosing developing oocytes stained with ab.a-E. The vitelline envelope was stained specifically with ab.a-VEP. Hepatocytes from the E2-treated fish had immunoreactivity with both antisera. Thus, VTG and VEP appear to be synthesized in the liver by direct stimulation of E2, released into the circulation, and incorporated into respective target sites. VTG and VEP in female serum maintained high levels from April until June, suggesting that yolk accumulation, as well as vitelline envelope formation, are occurring actively during these months. Unlike VTG, small amounts of VEP were detected between December and March, suggesting that vitelline envelope formation precedes yolk accumulation and that a slightly different hormonal regulation exists in the synthesis of both proteins in the liver during the early phase of oogenesis.

Notizen: Abstract. By means of peripheral computed tomography (pQCT), adult cortical bone density and volume was shown to be under a fixed rectilinear relationship regardless of age, sex, and presence or absence of osteoporosis. In children, however, the density-volume regression line followed a clearly different slope from that for adults (P 〈 0.001), indicating a difference in property and composition of the cortical bone between growing bone of children and grown-up bone of adults. Although both relative cortical volume and density increased with age in both boys and girls, no significant increase of trabecular bone was noted in either during the growth period. When the same technique was applied to the bone of rats known to continue growing with indefinite modeling without remodeling, the regression line between cortical bone density and volume was different from that of adult humans and similar to that of growing human children. Growing bone in a constant process of modeling and mineralization thus seems to have cortical bone possibly with less complete mineralization somewhat different from those of grown-up bone only undergoing remodeling. Selective cortical bone measurement by pQCT appears to be useful in characterizing the unique properties of the cortex of the growing bone.

Notizen: Abstract. In Japan, unlike in the United States and Europe, where osteoporosis is synonymous with postmenopausal osteoporosis, the need for treatment of osteoporosis has been emphasized only for elderly women with established disease. This may be because women in the immediate postmenopausal period in Japan are virtually free of symptoms such as lumbago and signs such as spinal compression fracture. Osteoporosis typically does not manifest itself until about age 65; therefore, postmenopausal osteoporosis with vertebral fracture below the age of 60 is quite rare in Japan. Unique features of treatment for osteoporosis in Japan include rare use of estrogen replacement therapy, common use of vitamin D derivatives (especially 1α(OH) vitamin D) without notable side effects, and use of calcitonin almost exclusively in a low-dose intermittent regimen (20 U/week). Similarly, the use of ipriflavone is common, and calcium supplementation, especially with an active absorbable algae calcium with high bioavailability (AAACa), is effective and popular. The emphasis on the use of calcium, vitamin D, and calcitonin in the treatment of osteoporosis may be explained by an extremely low dietary calcium intake in Japan. Other factors that favor reliance on the calcium-focused approach and avoidance of estrogen include a fatalistic and naturalistic view toward menopause; an uneasiness with hormone replacement therapy; an older female population who seek osteoporosis treatment because of uneventful immediate postmenopausal periods; and the efficient absorption of calcium from the intestine with favorable response to exogenous vitamin D due to a long-standing calcium deficiency and possibly a low incidence of vitamin D-receptor abnormalities.

Notizen: [Auszug] In a recent communication, Canepa and Mooney4 challenged these data and conclusions. They reported the carbonyl stretching frequencies for acetylcholine in water and ethanol and called attention to the well-known influence of the solvent on the carbonyl stretching frequency. They suggested that the ...
