    Notes: By the usage of the hydrolysis of Ti alkoxide, various types of TiO2 were obtained throughthe addition of catalyst (HCl, NH4OH, and CH3COONH4) and some additives into Ti alkoxidesolution at room temperature. In special, the effect of two additives, diethylene glycol (DEG) andhexamethylphospheric triamide (HMPA), on hydrolysis behaviors and microstructure with variouscatalyst for hydrolysis of Ti-tetraisopropoxide was in detail investigated. In case of TiO2 powder withHMPA as an additive, the crystallinity of TiO2 except with NH4OH as a catalyst decreased in XRDpatterns, compared to those of products with no additive and with DEG as an additive. The additionof HMPA prohibited the growth of TiO2 and led to fine TiO2 with the average particle size ofapproximately 10nm

    Notes: The aim of this study was to develop rapid and accurate procedures to identify microorganisms contaminating cosmetic products, based on the identity of the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal RNA coding DNA (rDNA). Five types of microorganisms were isolated from the inner portion of lotion bottle caps, skin care lotions, and cleansing gels. The rDNA ITS region of microorganisms was amplified through the use of colony-direct PCR or ordinal PCR using DNA extracts as templates. The nucleotide sequences of the amplified DNA were determined and subjected to homology search of a publicly available DNA database. Thereby, we obtained DNA sequences possessing high similarity with the query sequences from the databases of all the five organisms analyzed. The traditional identification procedure requires expert skills, and a time period of approximately 1 month to identify the microorganisms. On the contrary, 3–7 days were sufficient to complete all the procedures employed in the current method, including isolation and cultivation of organisms, DNA sequencing, and the database homology search. Moreover, it was possible to develop the skills necessary to perform the molecular techniques required for the identification procedures within 1 week. Consequently, the current method is useful for rapid and accurate identification of microorganisms, contaminating cosmetics.

    Notes: We report two atypical cases of membranous aplasia cutis surrounded by a rim of hairs, one case associated with dense dermal melanocytosis and the other with naevus flammeus, with characteristic clinical features. A rim of hypertrichosis, ‘hair collar’ sign, is proposed to have a close association with neuroectodermal defects. A failure of the normal closure of the cranial neural tube might have affected foetal skin development, including melanoblast migration and capillary network formation. The changes in the present cases, as well as the hair collar sign may suggest a complex hamartomatous nature of membranous aplasia cutis.

    Notes: Background:  Goblet cell metaplasia is a pathologic characteristic of asthma, associated with excess mucus secretion. Interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 plays an important role in mucus hypersecretion. Suplatast tosilate (suplatast), an antiallergic agent, is a Th2 cytokine inhibitor that suppresses the synthesis of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and eosinophilic airway inflammation.Objective:  We examined the effects of suplatast on mucus production in bronchial biopsy specimens taken from asthmatic subjects.Methods:  Oral suplatast 300 mg daily, or placebo was administered for 3 months in a double-blind, parallel-group study in 25 patients with asthma. Biopsy specimens were evaluated at before and after treatment for alcian blue/period acid-Schiff (AB/PAS), MUC5AC staining in bronchial epithelium and IL-4+, IL-13+ cells as well as inflammatory cells in lamina propria.Results:  There were significant decreases in the percentage of AB/PAS (P 〈 0.01) and MUC5AC (P 〈 0.01) stained area in the suplatast group. These changes were accompanied by significant decreases in IL-4+ and IL-13+ cells in suplatast-treated subjects. Additionally, we have observed that the number of infiltrating eosinophils and CD4+ T cells significantly decreased.Conclusions:  These findings suggest that suplatast prevents goblet cell metaplasia through modulation of Th2 cytokine production and the recruitment of eosinophils and CD4+ T cells in the asthmatic airways.
