Notes: In this paper, we demonstrate that a dynamic stress concentration around Lüders band canbe directly displayed using mechanoluminescence (ML) sensing film of SrAl2O4:Eu (SAO) coated onthe surface of metal. Uniaxial tensile test of an aluminum alloy (2.5% Mg) plate coated with the SAOsensing film was performed and the ML images were recorded using a high-speed camera. CapturedML images confirmed the formation and propagation of Lüders band clearly in real time

Notes: Recently we have proposed that stress distribution of a subject can be visualized byutilizing a novel mechanoluminescence phenomenon that can give intense visible light emission byapplication of mechanical stress. As the luminescence intensity is proportional to the time-variationof strain energy in the elastic region, we call it elastico-luminescence. In order to realize a high spaceresolution in such visualization for stress distribution, we aim to develop strong elastico-luminescentnanoparticles, such as a controlled structure of α-SrAl2O4:Eu (monoclinic phase). The processing ofthe nanoparticles, the property and the applications will be reported in the present work

Notes: This paper presents the application of modal analysis and parameter identificationusing data of random vibration test to a cylinder structure. It is deduced that the impulseresponse function can be substituted by the cross-correlation function computed directlyfrom the response-only data based on the white noise excitation or broadband input. So themodal parameter identification can be done by the least squares complex exponential(LSCE) method. And the modal parameters are obtained from the random vibration test databy the complex exponential method. Compared with the results of traditional modal test, theresults of random vibration test are proved to be correct, and also the feasibility of this ideais proved well

Notes: A coupled thermo-mechanical model of plane-strain orthogonal metal cutting includingburr formation is presented using the commercial finite element code. A simulation procedure basedon Normalized Cockroft-Latham damage criterion is proposed for the purpose of better understandingthe burr formation mechanism and obtaining a quantitative analysis of burrs at exit. The cuttingprocess is simulated from the transient initial chip formation state to the steady-state of cutting, andthen to tool exit transient chip flow, by incrementally advancing the cutting tool. The effects of cuttingcondition on the non-steady-state chip flow while tool exit can be investigated using the developedfinite element model

Notes: China Low Activation Martensitic steel (CLAM), which is one of the RAFMs (ReducedActivation Ferritic/Martensitic steels) and under development in ASIPP, is considered as theprimary candidate structural material and LiPb eutectic as both tritium breeder and coolant of theblankets in FDS series fusion reactors. The corrosion behavior of CLAM steel exposed to the liquidbreeder LiPb is of significance. Corrosion tests of CLAM in flowing LiPb at 480°C were performedup to about 2000 hrs to analyze the corrosion mechanism of CLAM exposed to liquid LiPb. Thespecimens were observed and analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and EnergyDispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) after 500hrs, 1000hrs and 2000hrs corrosion experimentrespectively. The corrosion is of non-uniform and the weight loss was about 0.23 mg/cm2 after 2000hrs’ exposure, which is smaller for CLAM compared to those of other RAFMs

Notes: Two chemokine (C-X3-C) receptor 1 (CX3CR1) gene polymorphisms, V249I and T280M, and 10 CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) promoter haplotypes, P1–P10, have recently been reported to influence the progression of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS). As these studies were performed mainly with Caucasian and African-American subjects, we determined the distribution of these alleles in Chinese people for the purpose of predicting possible clinical responses to the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) epidemics in countries with significant Chinese populations, as well as to establish their effects on the expression of surface CCR5. Ninety-six HIV-negative Chinese individuals in Taiwan were subjected to genotyping, and we thus determined that the allelic frequencies of CX3CR1V249I and T280M changes were 2.6% and 2.1%, respectively, which were lower than found in Caucasians (25.5% and 14.0%, respectively). Unlike the previous reports, we only detected CCR5P1 and P4 haplotypes in Taiwanese people, and the P1/P1, P1/P4 and P4/P4 genotype frequencies were 21.0%, 41.1% and 37.9%, respectively. The sequencing data confirmed the results of previous studies, showing that CCR5P1 exhibited a complete linkage disequilibrium with a polymorphic allele 59029A present in the CCR5 promoter. Furthermore, fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis revealed that, in the absence of the CCR2–64I mutation, individuals carrying CCR5P1 tended to express more surface CCR5 on monocytes and CD4+ cells. Therefore, this study not only reports the frequencies for the CX3CR1 and CCR5 promoter haplotypes in a Chinese population living in Taiwan, but also identifies a statistical link between the P1/P1 haplotype and the elevated CCR5 expression levels in the study group.

Notes: Background Nitric oxide (NO) is a key factor for balancing T-helper type 1/T-helper type 2 immunity. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) genes have been associated with atopy and exhaled NO concentrations in Caucasians. We investigated the association between asthma traits and genetic polymorphisms in neuronal NO synthase (NOS1) and endothelial NO synthase (NOS3) in Chinese children. Methods Asthmatic children between 5 and 18 years of age and non-allergic controls were recruited. Plasma total IgE was measured by microparticle immunoassay, whereas allergen-specific IgEs were measured by fluorescent enzyme immunoassay. Fractional exhaled NO concentration (FeNO) was measured by a chemiluminescence analyser. NOS1 C5266T and NOS3 G894T were genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism, and (AAT)n polymorphism in intron 20 of NOS1 was determined by GeneScan analysis. Results The mean (SD) ages of 295 asthmatics and 174 controls were 11.1 (3.8) years and 11.6 (4.0) years, respectively (P=0.162). NOS1 C5266T and NOS3 G894T were not associated with asthma, atopy or FeNO. However, significantly more subjects with T/T in NOS1 C5266T had increased plasma total IgE as compared with those with C/T or C/C (P=0.017). This SNP was also associated with sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (P=0.049). Among asthmatic patients, log-transformed plasma total IgE levels were significantly higher among those homozygous for 5266T of NOS1 [mean (SD): 2.84 (0.44) for T/T, 2.68 (0.42) for C/T, 2.59 (0.69) for C/C; P=0.021]. This study found a significant inter-ethnic difference in the allele frequencies of AAT repeats, and this polymorphism was associated with high plasma total IgE levels (P=0.044) but not FeNO (P=0.158). NOS3 G894T was not associated with any asthma or atopy phenotype. Conclusions NOS1 C5266T and AAT repeats affect plasma IgE concentrations in Chinese children. On the other hand, neither NOS1 nor NOS3 SNP was associated with FeNO or the risk of having asthma.

Notes: Sepsis remains the single most important cause for multiple organ failure and death following burn injury for which no effective treatment is currently available. Burn injury is associated with immunosuppression which promotes sepsis. Studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that levels of the antimicrobial peptide (AMP), human β-defensin-2, was significantly decreased in burned skin epithelia, absent in burn blister fluid and poorly expressed in lung during inhalation injury. We hypothesize that 1) deficient antimicrobial peptides in burn wound promote progressive colonization of pathogens in burn wounds and 2) replacing active peptide components will restore the antimicrobial activity in burn wounds. We have synthesized several cationic steroid antimicrobials (CSAs) which mimic naturally occurring AMPs functionally. In vitro experiments using one of these synthetic drugs with locally isolated common burn pathogen P. aeruginosa and S aureus demonstrate MIC values of 2.0 ± 0.3 μg/ml and 0.4 ± 0.1 μg/ml, respectively, indicating effectiveness of these compounds against burn pathogens. These drugs were tested for cytotoxicity on cultured human keratinocytes using MTT cell viability assay. Results indicate that these drugs are nontoxic to cultured keratinocytes at the level required for bacterial killing. Since theses drugs are membrane active compounds it will be hard for bacteria to develop resistance and there is a great potential to be developed for clinical treatment.

Notes: Two cases of dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria (DUH) from a Chinese family are presented. Case 1 was a 62-year-old woman who had a generalized and progressive hyper- and hypopigmentation of the skin from the age of 8 years. Her brother had also developed a similar skin pigmentary defect from about the same age. Histopathological and ultrastructural examination of lesional skin showed increased melanin content in epidermal keratinocytes but no changes in the appearance or number of melanocytes. Although hereditary defects may influence melanogenesis resulting in a pigmentary anomaly, the pathogenesis of DUH remains unclear.
