Notes: Background:  Gene expression profiling of melanoma and nevic tissue has demonstrated that pleiotrophin (PTN) is significantly overexpressed in human melanomas. Methods:  To further evaluate PTN expression in melanocytic lesions, protein immunohistochemistry was performed on the spectrum of melanocytic lesions. Results:  Melanocytic nevi were consistently negative (n = 58). In contrast, the great majority of metastatic melanomas were positive (33/34, 97%). The analysis of 34 primary melanomas demonstrated PTN positivity in 20 lesions while 14 lesions were negative. Within the primary melanomas, PTN immunoreactivity was associated with metastasis (p = 0.0004) and decreased melanoma-related survival (p = 0.0444). Univariate analysis of PTN immunoreactivity predicted an increased risk for metastasis (relative risk 9.1, p = 0.003).Conclusions:  The results of this study confirm previous gene profiling data showing differential PTN expression between melanocytic nevi and melanomas. In addition, lesional PTN expression is associated with metastatic potential and may be a prognostic factor for melanomas.

Notes: Forty-four cases of biopsy-proven cutaneous metastases from internal organ or soft tissue malignancies were retrieved at a single institution from 1990 to 2004. All cases had detailed clinical and follow-up data. There were 19 males and 25 females, with a wide age range (37–86 years). Most (75%) had advanced (stage IV) disease at the time of metastasis. In four patients skin metastasis was the presenting lesion. The most common primary site for men is lung and for women, breast and lung. In nearly half of patients cutaneous metastasis was not the clinical diagnosis. The prognosis was grave (67% died of disease within a median of 7 months). Independent, blinded review by four dermatopathologists showed that without a detailed clinical history, most metastases from carcinomas were correctly suspected based on histologic patterns. However, metastases from small cell carcinomas and sarcomas were difficult to distinguish from primary skin tumors. Histologic recognition of a primary site was often difficult without pertinent clinical history. None of the metastasis had a combined immunohistochemical profile of B72.3 (−), CA125 (−), calretinin (+), p63 (+) and CK5/6 (+), which was commonly seen in skin adnexal tumors. This immunohistochemical panel appears to best differentiate the two entities.

Notes: Chemical components of the soil take an important role in the structure stability. It controlsthe soil structure under the normal water environment such as ordinary temperature, atmosphericpressure, and slowly changing hydro-chemical environment etc. It also has an important influence onthe ground subsidence and the formation of soil caves as well as the collapse of dispersive soil.Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), CT technology and X diffraction were used to measure thechemical damage of water to the soil structure in the laboratory. Results indicate that under normalwater environment, the change of the environmental parameters is not sufficient to cause damage tothe internal crystal force of mineral intergranulars and to activate atoms in crystal lattice, which leadssome defects and displacement of the crystal lattice. However, it can activate linking substance ofclay grains be defined as “soil mini-structure”. As the greatest contributor of soil stability, themini-structure is the "platform" and main place in which soil stability and instability will develop

Notes: The stabilized soil is a reinforcement material being applied extensively to civilengineering and hydraulic engineering. At present, chemical methods are used to improve density andstrength of soil by increasing the state of inter-particles’ contacts and forces among particles orparticle groups. Liquid stabilizer is the chemical reinforcing agent of stabilized soil. The physical andchemical interaction of reinforcing agent - clay - water affects the reinforcement of soil. Themechanism of strengthening soil using the Liquid stabilizer had not been clear. In laboratory, manyexperiments were carried out in order to study strengthening mechanism of the stabilized soil. Fromthe result of the test and analysis of its characteristics, we recognized that the reinforcement effect ofthe liquid stabilizer is controlled by the mini-structure of the stabilized soil, and strength of thestabilized soil comes mainly from its mini-structure
