Notes: An observation of light propagation in a two-dimensional photonic crystal-based (2D–PC) optical waveguide is reported. Bent waveguides with a bending angle of 60° embedded in a 2D–PC triangular lattice with air columns were fabricated on a molecular-beam epitaxially grown AlGaAs/GaAs structure. The light-propagation characteristics were examined by observing scattered light from PC regions with incident light in the 850–950 nm range under an optical microscope using a charge coupled device camera. The incident light was strongly guided for wavelengths corresponding to the photonic band gap. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We theoretically study the spin-polarized current flowing through a Josephson junction (JJ) in a spin injection device. When the spin-polarized current is injected from a ferromagnet in a superconductor (SC), the charge current is carried by the superconducting condensate (Cooper pairs), while the spin-up and spin-down currents flow in equal magnitude but in the opposite direction in a SC, because of no quasiparticle charge current in the SC. This indicates that not only the Josephson current but also the spin current flow across JJ at zero bias voltage, thereby generating Joule heating by the spin current. The result provides a new method for detecting the spin current by measuring Joule heating at JJ. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aim : This study aimed to investigate the consequences of Helicobacter pylori eradication and acid suppression on rehaemorrhage caused by bleeding peptic ulcers. Methods : A total of 320 patients who had been diagnosed with bleeding peptic ulcers between January 1994 and December 2001 were included in the study. Cases between 1994 and 1997, prior to the introduction of eradication therapy, were assigned to group A, whereas those between 1998 and 2001, after the eradication therapy, were assigned to group B.Results : Of the 320 cases, 162 were designated as group A (113 gastric ulcers and 49 duodenal ulcers) and 158 as group B (116 and 42, respectively). Rehaemorrhage occurred in 24 cases (15%) and five cases (3%) in groups A and B, respectively, presenting a significantly decreased rate of rehaemorrhage in group B. Among those without eradication, rehaemorrhage was observed in 15 of 128 cases (12%) that received treatment with histamine2-receptor antagonist (famotidine), and 14 of 142 cases (10%) treated with proton-pump inhibitors, with no significant difference between the two. Conclusions : Helicobacter pylori eradication lowered the rates of rehaemorrhage. Treatment with histamine2-receptor antagonist or proton-pump inhibitors did not produce a difference in the rate of rehaemorrhage.

Notes: Summary The average transit time of single red blood cells through a nuclepore membrane filter (pore diameter and length, 5 μm and 10 μm, respectively) was measured using an improved method and was shown to be an index of deformability. An increased passage time, indicating reduced deformability, was observed in renal failure.

Notes: Summary A needle type of colloid osmometer has been devised with special attachments which made it useable with 3-μl samples. It has been used in oncometry of fresh water teleosts to give the following results: 5.1±1.0 mm Hg for goldfish, 5.2±0.71 mm Hg for carp, and 14.3±0.75 mm Hg for eel.

Notes: Abstract  During a surgery of basilar aneurysms via the trans-sylvian approach, we encountered an arterial bleeding caused by rupture of an internal carotid artery aneurysm that had been difficult to diagnose before surgery, as it was a small and brood-neck aneurysm and mimicked arteriosclerosis. In spite of several surgical procedures, the surgical path at the basilar aneurysms became narrow, and we had to abandon the clipping of the aneurysms. Consideration of radiological and intraoperative findings was made for this case, demonstrating a pitfall that neurosurgeons may encounter during surgery.

Notes: Summary. Although it is known that GABAB receptors are negatively coupled to adenylyl cyclase, the detailed selectivity of functional interaction between GABAB receptors and Gi subfamily members is still ambiguous. (±)-Baclofen-stimulated high-affinity GTPase activity, which was competitively antagonized by 2-hydroxy-saclofen, was attenuated by pretreatment of the membranes with N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) in a concentration- and incubation period-dependent manner. The NEM-pretreated (50 μM, 15 min at 4°C) membranes restored the (±)-baclofen-sensitive high-affinity GTPase activity when reconstituted with pertussis toxin-sensitive bovine brain G proteins. Among recombinant rat Gα subunits, Giα−2 appeared most effective as compared with other subunits (Giα−2 〉 Giα−3 〉 Giα−1 = Goα). The GABAB receptor-mediated high-affinity GTPase activity was also completely eliminated by 100 μM suramin and by 100 μM benzalkonium chloride. These results indicate that GABAB receptors in rat cerebral cortex couple to NEM-sensitive G proteins, in particular Gi2, which are sensitive to suramin and benzalkonium chloride.

Notes: Summary. The effects of 3-week treatment with a typical antipsychotic drug chlorpromazine and three atypical antipsychotic drugs (risperidone, olanzapine and perospirone) on the binding to dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors were examined in the rat stratum and frontal cortex, respectively. Subchronic treatment with chlorpromazine (10 mg/kg) and perospirone (1 mg/kg) significantly increased D2 receptors, while no increase was observed with lower dose of chlorpromazine (5 mg/kg), perospirone (0.1 mg/kg), risperidone (0.25, 0.5 mg/kg) or olanzapine (1, 2 mg/kg). On the other hand, 3-week administration of chlorpromazine (5, 10 mg/kg) and olanzapine (1, 2 mg/kg) significantly decreased 5-HT2A receptors, but risperidone (0.25, 0.5 mg/kg) or perospirone (0.1, 1 mg/kg) had no effect. The measurement of in vivo drug occupation for D2 and 5-HT2A receptors using N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ) suggested that high occupation of 5-HT2A receptors with lower D2 receptor occupancy might be involved in the absence of up-regulation of D2 receptors after subchronic treatment with some atypical antipsychotic drugs.

Notes: Abstract This pictorial review illustrates a wide variety of paraneoplastic syndromes possibly associated with ovarian tumors. Many paraneoplastic syndromes are caused by unknown mechanisms, while others can be explained by the ectopic production of hormones (paraendocrine syndromes). Paraneoplastic syndromes frequently antedate the recognition of the tumor, and disappear with the removal of the tumor. Knowledge of the variety of paraneoplastic syndromes may allow early detection of the underlying disease.
