    Notes: Beginning with the molecular-based Fokker–Planck equation obtained previously [M. H. Peters, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 528 (1999); J. Stat. Phys. 94, 557 (1999)], the Smoluchowski diffusion equation is derived here to describe the spatial and orientational dynamics of molecularly structured macromolecules near molecularly structured surfaces. The formal scaling and perturbation methods employed allow the establishment of definite limits on the use of the Smoluchowski equation when surfaces are present. It is shown that the Smoluchowski equation reduces to that given previously [D. W. Condiff and J. S. Dahler, J. Chem. Phys. 44, 3988 (1966)] in the absence of external surfaces. A specific example application is given involving a spherical macromolecule with electrostatic charge segments near a planar surface with an arbitrary charge distribution. Finally, we show that the short-time solution to the Smoluchowski equation obtained here yields a Brownian dynamics method consistent with that given previously [E. Dickinson, S. A. Allison, and J. A. McCammon, J. Chem. Soc. Faraday Trans. 2 81, 591 (1985)] for orientable, interacting Brownian particles. This study has applications to problems involving site-specific adsorption of orientable, structured Brownian particles, such as association or adsorption of biological macromolecules to cellular surfaces and enzyme–substrate docking kinetics, to name a few. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Many instances exist of significant memory loss for events during brief awakenings from sleep. The present experiment sought to determine whether such memory loss was attributable to depth of pre-awakening sleep or to length of awakening. Fourteen young adult subjects performed a standard memory task after being awakened from stage 2 or stage 4 sleep. Subjects either remained awake for 8 min or returned to sleep immediately after the learning task. Both short and long term memory were significantly worse when awakenings were made from stage 4 (deep) compared with stage 2 (light) sleep and when learning occurred immediately after being awakened. No significant effects were found when the length of the period awake after learning was lengthened. It was concluded that memory for events occurring during brief awakenings was affected by the prior stage of sleep. The effect was discussed as an example of state dependent learning.

    Notes: Summary. Plasma vitamin A and retinol-binding protein (RBP) concentrations have been studied in women using oral contraceptives (OC) for up to 4 years. In eight women taking an oestrogenic OC(1 mg of nor-ethisterone acetate +50 μg of ethinyloestradiol) values almost doubled within 6 months, but diminished somewhat after 4 years. Saturation of RBP with retinol remained fairly constant. Five lactating women who took pro-gestogen-only OC (30 μg of levonorgestrel or 350 μg of norethisterone) showed no significant alteration in plasma vitamin A or RBP concentrations as compared with nine lactating non-OC users. All lactating women showed significant differences between the highest and lowest plasma vitamin A (P〈0.005) and RBP (P〈0.05) concentrations during the first 6 months of lactation. Highest values occurred 11–12 weeks post-partum and the lowest at 15–17 weeks. Percentage saturation of RBP with retinol was significantly higher (P〈0.005) when vitamin A concentration was highest.

    Notes: Very few studies have systematically examined recovery of performance after sleep deprivation. In the present study, 12 young adult males were sleep deprived for periods of 40 and 64 hrs. Each period was preceded by baseline nights of sleep and followed by two recovery nights of sleep. Immediate recall and reaction time were tested at 2300, 0145, 0400, 0615, and 0830 during baseline, deprivation, and recovery nights. Performance efficiency showed a progressive decline after 2 hrs of recovery sleep following both periods of deprivation. Return to baseline was apparent after 4 hrs of steep following 40 hrs awake and after 8 hrs of sleep following 64 hrs awake. These results suggested that, in terms of behavioral efficiency, an equal amount of sleep is not required to compensate for sleep lost.

    Notes: This study examined beat-by-beat relationships between blood pressure, the time interval from the ECG Q-wave to the radial pulse wave (QRPI), and its two components, the cardiac pre-ejection period (PEP) and aortic-radial arterial pulse transit time (AR-PTT). In 8 subjects, intra-arterial systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, QRPI, PEP, and AR-PTT were measured during rest, mental arithmetic, cold pressor, and inhalation of amyl nitrite. Both PEP and AR-PTT varied widely during each experimental condition indicating that QRPI change reflected both PEP and AR-PTT change. AR-PTT varied inversely with SBP and DBP; PEP sometimes varied directly and sometimes inversely with both SBP and DBP. QRPI varied inversely with both SBP and DBP with the magnitude of the correlation in a particular instance depending on the relationships for that instance between blood pressure and both PEP and AR-PTT. Implications of the results for the use of either QRPI or AR-PTT as indices of blood pressure change are discussed.

    Notes: Twelve Marine subjects marched approximately 20 miles to expend as much energy in one 16-hr day as is expended during 40 hrs of relatively inactive sleep deprivation. At the end of the march, performance on addition, vigilance, choice reaction time, tapping, short-term memory, symbol substitution, and three mood scales was decremented significantly. Those decrements closely approximated decrements reported in the literature following 40 hrs of sleep deprivation. However, recovery sleep stages and arousal thresholds were essentially unchanged as compared to baseline and were significantly different from those predicted after 40 hrs of sleep loss. It was concluded that while changes in performance were probably linked to total energy consumption, the commonly measured sleep variables were not.
