    The Smoluchowski diffusion equation for structured macromolecules near structured surfaces (2000)

    Notes: Beginning with the molecular-based Fokker–Planck equation obtained previously [M. H. Peters, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 528 (1999); J. Stat. Phys. 94, 557 (1999)], the Smoluchowski diffusion equation is derived here to describe the spatial and orientational dynamics of molecularly structured macromolecules near molecularly structured surfaces. The formal scaling and perturbation methods employed allow the establishment of definite limits on the use of the Smoluchowski equation when surfaces are present. It is shown that the Smoluchowski equation reduces to that given previously [D. W. Condiff and J. S. Dahler, J. Chem. Phys. 44, 3988 (1966)] in the absence of external surfaces. A specific example application is given involving a spherical macromolecule with electrostatic charge segments near a planar surface with an arbitrary charge distribution. Finally, we show that the short-time solution to the Smoluchowski equation obtained here yields a Brownian dynamics method consistent with that given previously [E. Dickinson, S. A. Allison, and J. A. McCammon, J. Chem. Soc. Faraday Trans. 2 81, 591 (1985)] for orientable, interacting Brownian particles. This study has applications to problems involving site-specific adsorption of orientable, structured Brownian particles, such as association or adsorption of biological macromolecules to cellular surfaces and enzyme–substrate docking kinetics, to name a few. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This report attempts to give nontechnical readers some insight into how a multilevel modelling framework can be used in longitudinal studies to assess contextual influences on child development when study samples arise from naturally formed groupings. We hope to achieve this objective by: (1) discussing the types of variables and research designs used for collecting developmental data; (2) presenting the methods and data requirements associated with two statistical approaches to developmental data—growth curve modelling and discrete-time survival analysis ; (3) describing the multilevel extensions of these approaches, which can be used when the study of development includes intact clusters or naturally formed groupings; (4) demonstrating the flexibility of these two approaches for addressing a variety of research questions; and (5) placing the multilevel framework developed in this report in the context of some important issues, alternative approaches, and recent developments. We hope that readers new to these methods are able to visualize the possibility of using them to advance their work.

    Notes: This study addressed four questions which parents of children with selective mutism (SM) frequently ask: (1) Is SM associated with anxiety or oppositional behavior? (2) Is SM associated with parenting and family dysfunction? (3) Will my child fail at school? and (4) Will my child make friends or be teased and bullied? In comparison to a sample of 52 community controls, 52 children with SM were more anxious, obsessive, and prone to somatic complaints. In contrast, children with SM were less oppositional and evidenced fewer attentional difficulties at school. We found no group differences in family structure, economic resources, family functioning, maternal mood difficulties, recreational activities, or social networks. While parents reported no differences in parenting strategies, children with SM were described as less cooperative in disciplinary situations. The academic (e.g., reading and math) and classroom cooperative skills of children with SM did not differ from controls. Parents and teachers reported that children with SM had significant deficits in social skills. Though teachers and parents rated children with SM as less socially assertive, neither teachers nor parents reported that children with SM were victimized more frequently by peers.

    Notes: The use of DSM-IV based questionnaires in child psychopathology is on the increase. The internal construct validity of a DSM-IV based model of ADHD, CD, ODD, Generalised Anxiety, and Depression was investigated in 11 samples by confirmatory factor analysis. The factorial structure of these syndrome dimensions was supported by the data. However, the model did not meet absolute standards of good model fit. Two sources of error are discussed in detail: multidimensionality of syndrome scales, and the presence of many symptoms that are diagnostically ambiguous with regard to the targeted syndrome dimension. It is argued that measurement precision may be increased by more careful operationalisation of the symptoms in the questionnaire. Additional approaches towards improved conceptualisation of DSM-IV are briefly discussed. A sharper DSM-IV model may improve the accuracy of inferences based on scale scores and provide more precise research findings with regard to relations with variables external to the taxonomy.

    Anger, Blame, and Dimensions of Perceived Norm Violations: Culture, Gender, and Relationships (2004)

    Notes: From a social cognitive perspective on anger, we attempted to examine the structure of perceived norm violations and their relationships with anger. We asked 884 university students from 4 countries (United States, Germany, Japan, and Hong Kong) to rate their experiences of being harmed in terms of norm violations, angry feelings, blame, and relationship with the harm doers. We found 2 culturally common dimensions in perceived norm violations (informal interpersonal norms and formal societal norms), and these dimensions substantially increased both angry feelings and blame in almost all cultural groups. The violation of interpersonal norms generally evoked anger more frequently than that of societal norms, but there were interactions between culture and relationship closeness and between gender and relationship closeness.

    Notes: This study assesses the efficacy of using an online panel to represent the views of participants in an annual proprietary multi-sports event. A mixed mode (online and mail survey) research design was used in an attempt to collect data from the entire client-base. While there were some demographic similarities between the online and mail respondent groups, there were also some significant demographic and behavioral differences and important product preference differences. Our survey findings are presented and discussed. In addition, we discuss the implications of our findings for panel selection in proprietary marketing research settings.

    Notes: The effective implementation of just-in-time (JIT) in the US public sector is examined in this empirical study. Specifically, the relationships between organizational modification efforts prior to JIT implementation, problems encountered during implementation and JIT success are investigated using a sample of 86 public sector organizations. The results of this research seem to support the notion that JIT, as a form of "managerialism", has the potential to increase the operational efficiency, service quality and organizational effectiveness of public sector organizations. However, for this potential to be achieved, public sector organizations, like their private sector counterparts, must be willing to modify their procedures and operations. The potential benefits of JIT to public sector organizations are not in doubt. However, the art of designing the right JIT implementation strategy for such organizations is debatable. Therefore, issues related to these concerns are worthy of future research. This study is a modest contribution toward that end.

    Notes: Enterprise resource planning systems, if implemented successfully, can bestow impressive strategic, operational and information-related benefits to adopting firms. A failed implementation can often spell financial doom. Currently, most of the information about the failures and successes are based on reports on implementations in large manufacturing and service organizations. But enterprise resource planning vendors are now steadily turning their marketing sights on small and medium-sized manufacturers. The time is ripe for researchers to gather, analyze and disseminate information that will help these firms to implement their projects successfully. This research adopts a multiple case study approach to investigate the implementation process in small and midsize manufacturing firms in the US. The research focuses on implementation activities that foster successful installations and are developed using information gleaned from our field studies of four projects. Avenues for future research are also suggested.

    Notes: The highly competitive electronics manufacturing marketplace demands that suppliers provide low-cost, high-quality products to their customers in a timely fashion. Shortened product life cycles and increasingly global competition have caused traditional manufacturers to focus on their company core competencies, such as product design and development, choosing to outsource the actual manufacturing of their products to contract manufacturers. Although the decision to outsource can have both positive and adverse effects on key areas of the manufacturing supply chain, one positive effect is that the manufacturer's supply chain agility is increased. Outsourcing has caused an increase in the amount of information that is shared between supply chain partners. As a result, a greater reliance on suppliers and alliance partners has become essential for company survival. We examine the ways in which contract manufacturing has increased the agility of the electronics manufacturing supply chain.

The hydroxy groups of the dioxolane are hydrogen bonded to dioxane to form an alternating chain structure.
