    Notes: 1 Anthraquinone stimulant cathartics, such as emodin, are believed to increase the rate of contraction of ileum tissue in vitro via multiple mechanisms. The aim of this study was to probe the effects of emodin on acetylcholine (ACh)-induced contraction of the rat isolated ileum preparation. 2 Ileal sections were incubated in Tyrode's solution and responses to methacholine, ACh and emodin obtained in the absence and presence of the muscarinic antagonist atropine and the choline uptake inhibitor hemicholinium (HC-3). Depletion of endogenous ACh in the presence of HC-3 was achieved by construction of an ACh dose–response curve, using exogenous ACh, prior to re-testing the effects of emodin in the presence of HC-3. 3 Emodin caused dose-dependent tissue contraction that was abolished by inclusion of atropine (1 μm) in the buffer. Atropine (1 μm) antagonized the response caused by methacholine. 4 Incubation of tissues with HC-3 (1 and 10 μm) reduced the maximum response caused by emodin by 45% and 71% respectively, but had no effect on ACh-induced tissue contraction. 5 These data suggest that, emodin causes contraction of the ileum by triggering the release of endogenous ACh which acts on muscarinic receptors to cause contraction of the rat isolated ileum preparation.

    Notes: We derive a generalization of the well-known theorem for the square integrability of a unitary irreducible representation of a locally compact group. The generalization covers the case of representations admitting vector coherent states. The result is illustrated by an example drawn from the isochronous Galilei group. The construction yields a wide variety of coherent states, labeled by phase space points, which satisfy a resolution of the identity condition, and incorporate spin degrees of freedom. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Yield and quality reductions caused by Fusarium head blight (FHB) have spurred spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeders to identify and develop new sources of host plant resistance. Four wheat synthetic hexaploids (×Aegilotriticum sp.) were developed, each having a quantitative trait locus (QTL), Qfhs.ndsu-3AS, providing FHB resistance from Triticum turgidum L. var. dicoccoides chromosome 3A. Synthetics were produced by hybridizing a ‘Langdon’-T. dicoccoides- recombinant chromosome 3A substitution line (2n = 4x = 28, AABB with two accessions of T. tauschii (2n= 2x = 14, DD). Synthetics were inoculated and evaluated for FHB resistance in two separate greenhouse seasons. One synthetic, 01NDSWG-5, exhibited FHB severity ratings of 36% and 32% in the separate seasons, compared with ratings of 9% and 30% for ‘Alsen’, a FHB-resistant spring cultivar, and ratings of 70% and 96% for ‘McNeal’, a susceptible spring cultivar, respectively. Synthetic × Alsen backcross-derived lines were produced to initiate combining different sources of FHB resistance.

    Effect of supplemental pre-operative fluid on postoperative nausea and vomiting (2003)

    Notes: In a prospective, double-blind, randomised controlled trial, we studied the effects of pre-operative fluid load on post-operative nausea and vomiting. Eighty patients attending for laparoscopic cholecystectomy or gynaecological surgery were randomly allocated to receive 2 ml.kg−1 (conservative) or 15 ml.kg−1 (supplemental) Hartmann's solution intravenously, shortly before induction of anaesthesia. During the operation, fluid management was identical in both groups. During the first post-operative 24 h, post-operative nausea and vomiting occurred in 29 patients (73%) in the conservative fluid group and nine patients (23%) in the supplemental fluid group (p = 0.01). Supplemental pre-operative fluid is an inexpensive and safe therapy for reducing post-operative nausea and vomiting.

    Notes: In most acupuncture studies it is difficult or even impossible to conduct a truly double-blind trial. However, this is possible when treatments are carried out on anaesthetised patients. Because acupuncture provides analgesia, we tested the hypothesis that needle stimulation of a combination of four ear acupoints would significantly reduce anaesthetic requirement. Ten healthy volunteers were anaesthetised with desflurane and randomly assigned to no treatment or acupuncture; the alternative treatment was given on a subsequent study day. Auricular acupuncture was performed with needles placed at the Shen Men, Thalamus, Tranquiliser and Master Cerebral Points on the right ear. Anaesthetic requirement, determined by the Dixon up-and-down method, was defined by the average desflurane concentration that prevented purposeful movement of the extremities in response to noxious electrical stimulation. Volunteers required a greater desflurane concentration to prevent movement on the control than on the acupuncture day: 4.9 (0.7; SD) vs. 4.4 (0.8) vol. %, p = 0.003. Acupuncture thus reduced anaesthetic requirement by 8.5 (7)%.

    Notes: Background  Autoantibodies in linear immunoglobulin A (IgA) disease (LAD) are reported to be of IgA class and directed against a 97–120 kDa epidermal antigen.Methods  We report a 39-year-old woman with clinical features of LAD and with circulating IgA and IgG autoantibodies to the 180 kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen (BP180).Results  Histopathology of lesional skin revealed a subepidermal blister with mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate. Direct immunofluorescence of perilesional skin showed linear deposits of IgA along the dermal–epidermal junction. The antigen specificity of the patient's circulating antibodies was determined by Western blotting and enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) using various antigen sources, including cultured human keratinocytes, dermal protein lysates, and purified laminin-5, as well as proteins corresponding to BP180, the 230 kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen (BP230), laminin-5 subunits, and collagen IV α1–α6 chains. IgA and IgG antibodies in the patient's serum were directed against BP180, and no IgA or IgG reactivity was found against the other skin antigens.Conclusions  These data provide evidence for the presence of a subtype of LAD with dual IgA and IgG autoimmune response to BP180.

    Notes: Four varieties of rice having very high (29.4%) to low (17.6%) amylose-equivalent (AE) were parboiled by steaming at atmospheric (PB-O) and at 3 kg/cm2 (PB-3) gauge pressure. The cooked rice texture of the raw, PB-0 and PB-3 rice was determined by Viscoelastographe. Gel permeation chromatography of rice flour starch on Sepharose CL-2B, in general, indicated thermal breakdown of starch. The extent of starch breakdown and the firmness values of cooked PB-0 and PB-3 rices were reasonably well correlated suggesting that starch breakdown during parboiling may have some role to play in varying the texture of rice by parboiling. The chain profile of rice starch remained unaltered after parboiling.
