Notes: The operation of a 92 GHz quasi-optical gyrotron having a resonator formed by a spherical mirror and a diffraction grating placed in −1 order Littrow mount is presented. A power of 150 kW with a Gaussian output pattern was measured. The Gaussian content in the output was 98% with less than 1% of depolarization. By optimizing the magnetic field at fixed frequency, a maximum efficiency of 15% was reached.

Notes: Permanent pasture in the Po Valley of Italy was the site of a pluriannual experiment (1975–81) to observe the effects on hay production of N and P fertilizer applications well above those normally recommended. A split-plot design with a randomized complete block arrangement of the whole-plot factor with 5 levels of N and the subplot factor with 3 levels of P was chosen for the experiment. The maximum rate of N application was 800 kg ha−1 while the corresponding rate for P was 87.3 kg ha−1. Principal species in the sward were orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), common velvetgrass (Holcus lanatus L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.).This field was irrigated according to customary techniques during summer months and cut five limes each year. Yields were analysed by means of a response function of the linear and plateau type which incorporates von Liebig's Law of the Minimum, it was found that this function represents the hay response very well with respect to N. In fact, beyond 390 kg ha −1 applied N the response is negligible up to 800 kg ha−1, the maximum rate tested in this experiment. The optimal rate of applied N decreased consistently over the years from 390 to 260 kg ha−1. At these unusually high levels of fertilization hay production increased about 60–80% compared with normal practices. The estimation of the von Liebig response function requires mathematical programming knowledge. The estimates obtained are maximum likelihood estimates. The practical importance of estimating and using this response function lies in its ability to achieve the maximum response with the minimum amount of fertilizers among all other admissible response functions. Hence, its adoption for making fertilizer recommendations would save farmers money and limit chemical pollution to the environment.

Notes: The brief note describes diverse aspects of the technique used for rhenium plating the hot plate used for contact ionization of barium in a Q plasma source. The rhenium plating optimizes the probability of barium ionization. Special care has to be taken in order to deposit a uniform layer of rhenium, for this purpose a slow rotation is given to the plate during deposition.

Notes: The comments made by Goeckner and Goree are correct, in general, but they are not relevant to our experiment. The measurements made with the optical carriage represent an average over the diagnosed volume, and the laser power is low enough to avoid the effect due to saturation broadening.

Notes: An "optical carriage'' has been developed to improve plasma access for LIF diagnostics. Laser light inducing the fluorescence is transported through an optical fiber to the carriage. A telescope fixed on the carriage collects the plasma fluorescence light and sends it through a fiber bundle to an external PMT. The whole carriage is mounted on rails and can be scanned along and across the magnetic field.

Notes: A brief review of the discovery of the fatigue crack growth threshold is provided with a discussion of the main variables, Kmax and ΔK, which control the threshold over the low and high load ratio ranges, respectively. The significant effect on near threshold growth rates as illustrated by Donald are shown, for an example the aluminium alloy, 2324-T39. Attention is then turned to the ‘partial closure model’ as a means of correlating near threshold fatigue crack growth rates. This seems to be the most promising model with a physical basis. For this reason, the discussion goes on to present a new theoretical analysis of the load displacement record characteristics, which should accompany ‘partial closure’ of fatigue cracks. In addition it is concluded that secondary stress effects should be explored for near threshold fatigue crack growth rates.

Notes: Secondary elastic crack tip stress intensity factors are defined in a convenient way consistent with the primary stress intensity factor definition. Methods of evaluation of these secondary stress intensity factors are developed. They are evaluated for example configurations with cracks. It is shown that the first secondary term may be sufficient to evaluate the effects of secondary stresses beyond the usual stress intensity factor and nominal normal stresses parallel to the crack direction.

Notes: Abstract From new measurements, a half-live of 4.2±0.3 s has been clearly established in127Pr. This value confirms our first result [4] and rules out other data [5]. The127Pr activity was produced by bombarding92Mo or94Mo targets with 210 MeV40Ca beams. The mass identification has been made using an ion-guide coupled with an on-line isotope separator. The partial level scheme proposed for127Ce has been deduced from β-gated γ spectra and Xγ- and γγ-coincidences. A new band structure based on a 1/2+ state is established.

Notes: Abstract In Italy, new agroforestry cultural models could play an important role in the diffusion of plantation forestry timber species. We studied the stem growth rates and leaf water potentials (Ψ) of common walnut (Juglans regia L.), and gravimetric soil moisture (θDW) depletion during the third and fourth growing seasons in an agroforestry trial in central Italy. Since the establishment of experimental plots in 1992, walnut was intercropped with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), with or without polyethylene (PE) mulching along tree rows. By the end of the study period, the unmulched-intercropped walnut was almost 68% smaller in stem diameter and height than the sole-unmulched control, demonstrating walnut’s sensitivity to alfalfa competition. The competitive effect of alfalfa on walnut stem growth was effectively controlled/reduced by PE mulching. Stem growth rates of mulched-intercropped walnut were always lower than the control, but much higher (ca. 235% in stem diameter and height) than those of unmulched-intercropped walnut. The higher field performance of mulched-intercropped walnut compared to the un- mulched-intercropped treatment was associated with higher soil moisture and predawn and midday Ψ values during the summer’s driest periods. The presence of PE mulching was also associated with lower levels of soil moisture during the early and late growing season, but this did not negatively affect walnut Ψ and growth rates. These results suggest that in the climatic conditions of central Italy, competition for soil moisture between young common walnut trees and alfalfa can be substantially lowered, but not completely eliminated, by PE mulching.
