Notes: The characteristics of Schottky diodes on n-GaAs fabricated after an in situ low-pressure rf H2 plasma treatment have been investigated as a function of the substrate temperature during the plasma treatment. Degraded rectifying characteristics result after room-temperature treatments, while diodes with ideality factor as low as 1.01 were achieved in the temperature range 160–240 °C. An increase in barrier height was also observed with increasing substrate temperature during plasma treatment. The contact properties are correlated to H diffusion in a surface layer of GaAs, which passivates the dopant atoms and defect sites.

Notes: The neuropeptide secretoneurin (SN) is an endoproteolytic product of the chromogranin secretogranin II. We investigated the effects of SN on the differentiation of immature cerebellar granule cells derived from the external granular layer (EGL). Secretoneurin caused concentration-dependent increases in neurite outgrowth, reflecting differentiation. The maximum effect was reached at a concentration of 100 nm SN. Secretoneurin immunoneutralization using specific antiserum significantly decreased neurite outgrowth; however, neurite morphology was altered. An affinity chromatography-purified antibody significantly inhibited the outgrowth response to SN (p 〈 0.001) without altering the morphology. Binding studies suggest the existence of specific G-protein-coupled receptors on the surface of monocytes that recognize SN. Assuming that SN promotes neurite outgrowth in EGL cells by acting through a similar G-protein-coupled mechanism, we treated SN-stimulated EGL cultures with pertussis toxin. Exposure to pertussis toxin (0.1 µg/mL) showed a significant inhibition of the SN-induced outgrowth. To establish a second messenger pathway we used the protein kinase C inhibitor staurosporine. We found that EGL cell viability was not enhanced following chronic SN treatment for 24 h. These data indicate that SN is a novel trophic substance that can affect cerebellar maturation, primarily by accelerating granule cell differentiation through a signalling mechanism that is coupled to pertussis toxin-sensitive G-proteins.

Notes: Abstract Functional long-term allograft survival after experimental small bowel transplantation (SBT) is limited by chronic rejection. Initial application of high-dose FK 506 has been shown to induce stable long-term graft function. In order to examine whether this long-term function is associated with donor-specific tolerance, we analyzed the functional status of recipient T cells in vivo and in vitro. One-step orthotopic SBT was performed in the allogeneic Brown Norway (BN)-to-Lewis rat strain combination. FK 506 was given daily at a dose of 2 mg/kg from days 0–5 in the rejection model and from days 0–9 in the long-term functional model. Mean survival time in the rejection model was 98 ± 2.8 days. Histological examination of these small bowel allografts disclosed signs of chronic rejection. In contrast, all animals of the long-term functional model survived long term ( 〉 250 days) without clinical signs of chronic rejection. The latter model, furthermore, produced evidence of donor-specific tolerance. Whereas heterotopic Dark Agouti (DA) hearts were rejected regularly within 7 days, BN hearts survived indefinitely ( 〉 70 days). In vitro, mixed leukocyte reactivity of CD4 + T cells was similarly strong against donor (BN) antigens as against third-party (DA) antigens. The split tolerance revealed by our in vivo and in vitro results enabled acceptance of both the small bowel allograft without signs of chronic rejection and of donor-specific heart allografts.

Notes: Abstract Zirconyl tungstate ceramic-supported membranes were developed and characterized. The transport process of Cs(I), Sr(II) and La(III) from the anode compartment to the cathode was investigated. The cationic fluxes for Cs(I), Sr(II) and La(III) were found to be 9·10−10, 2.7·10−9 and 2.4·10−9 g·eq·cm−2·s−1, respectively. The transport numbers of these cations were found to be 0.12, 0.07 and 0.09, respectively. Separation of Cs(I), Sr(II) and La(III) was achieved using EDTA as a chelating agent in the anode compartment. Cs(I) was successfully separated with a decontamination factor of 97% from simulated intermediate level liquid waste (ILLW) containing Cs(I) and Sr(II).

Notes: Abstract K α X-ray spectra were measured with a Du Mond type curves crystal spectrometer for42Mo and46Pd targets bombarded with oxygen ions at 5.5 MeV/u energy (i.e. at velocity closely matching those of the targetL-shell electrons). The distribution ofL-shell vacancies produced in collisions with simultaneousK-shell ionization is deduced from the measured yield distribution of theK α X-ray satellites. The distribution shows deviations from the binomial ones. The deviations can be accounted for by assuming that theL-shell vacancy production is due to two uncorrelated processes: the direct ionization by impact and the electron capture from theL-shell of the target atom into theK-shell of the projectile, both occurring at nearly central collisions. The corresponding probability values are deduced using simple statistical considerations.
