Notizen: The impact of metal–oxide–semiconductor processing on strained Si/SiGe device structures has been examined. Material was grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy and ultra low pressure chemical vapor deposition, with different as-grown surface roughness. The effects of RCA cleaning, gate oxidation and rapid thermal annealing on this material were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical profilometry. Certain processes caused reactions common to both material types, whereas others yielded dissimilar responses. Filtering AFM roughness data of specific wavelengths enabled the effects of processing on large-scale surface roughness dominated by the cross-hatching morphology and smaller scale microroughness to be investigated. The results suggest that as-grown Si/SiGe material quality is not a good indicator of processed device performance, rather morphological changes which occur during processing must be considered. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Background:  Strategies to prevent children from developing allergy have been elaborated on the basis of state-of-the-art reviews of the scientific literature regarding pets and allergies, building dampness and health, and building ventilation and health. A similar multidisciplinary review of infant feeding mode in relation to allergy has not been published previously. Here, the objective is to review the scientific literature regarding the impact of early feeding (breast milk and/or cow's milk and/or formula) on development of atopic disease. The work was performed by a multidisciplinary group of Scandinavian researchers. Methods:  The search in the literature identified 4323 articles that contained at least one of the exposure and health effect terms. A total of 4191 articles were excluded mainly because they did not contain information on both exposure and health effects. Consequently, 132 studies have been scrutinized by this review group. Results:  Of the 132 studies selected, 56 were regarded as conclusive. Several factors contributed to the exclusions. The studies considered conclusive by the review group were categorized according to population and study design. Conclusions:  The review group concluded that breastfeeding seems to protect from the development of atopic disease. The effect appears even stronger in children with atopic heredity. If breast milk is unavailable or insufficient, extensively hydrolysed formulas are preferable to unhydrolysed or partially hydrolysed formulas in terms of the risk of some atopic manifestations.

Notizen: (1) Age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength can partly be counteracted by resistance training, causing a net synthesis of muscular proteins. Protein synthesis is influenced synergistically by post-exercise amino acid supplementation, but the importance of the timing of protein intake remains unresolved. (2) The study investigated the importance of immediate (P0) or delayed (P2) intake of an oral protein supplement upon muscle hypertrophy and strength over a period of resistance training in elderly males. (3) Thirteen men (age 74 ± 1 years; body mass index (BMI), 25 ± 1 kg m− 2 (means ± SEM)) completed a 12-week resistance training program (three times per week) receiving oral protein in liquid form (10 g protein, 7 g carbohydrate, 3 g fat) immediately after (P0) or 2 h after (P2) each training session. Muscle hypertrophy was evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and from muscle biopsies and muscle strength was determined using dynamic and isokinetic strength measurements. Body composition was determined from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and food records were obtained over 4 days. The plasma insulin response to protein supplementation was also determined. (4) In response to training, the cross-sectional area of m. quadriceps femoris (54.6 ± 0.5–58.3 ± 0.5 cm2) and mean fiber area (4047 ± 320–5019 ± 615 μ m2) increased in the P0 group, whereas no significant increase was observed in P2. For P0 both dynamic and isokinetic strength increased, by 46 and 15%, respectively (P 〈 0.05), whereas P2 only improved in dynamic strength, by 36% (P 〈 0.05). No differences in glucose or insulin response were observed between protein intake at 0 and 2 h post-exercise. (5) We conclude that early intake of an oral protein supplement after resistance training is important for the development of hypertrophy in skeletal muscle of elderly men in response to resistance training.

Notizen: Abstract  Of 163 patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures 87 received 2 g dicloxacillin and 240 mg of gentamicin preoperatively, and 76 patients had no antibiotic prophylaxis. Preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis was not shown to have any significant effect on wound infections. However, 16 reversible and 1 irreversible cases of kidney toxicity were found among patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis, whereas there were only four cases of reversible kidney damage among the patients not receiving antibiotics.

Notizen: Summary A new functional test using downhill walking is described and evaluated in relation to the myelographical examination in 23 consecutive patients with neurogenic intermittent claudication. Discomfort and changes of the neurological status, emerging during the walk, were accepted as test results. They were noted in a decision matrix and the positive and the negative predictive values (PPV and NPV, respectively) calculated. The PPV of any symptom or any deterioration of the neurological status, resulting from this test as signs of a myelographical abnormality, was calculated to be 86 and 89 per cent, respectively, the corresponding NPV's being 50 and 40 per cent, respectively. The NPV of these parameters as signs of a myelographically verified lumbar spinal stenosis was calculated to be 100 per cent, the corresponding PPV's being 38 and 44 per cent, respectively. The development of “symptommarch” or of bilateral neurological signs during the walk was found to be of approximately the same diagnostical value. We conclude, that this function test may serve as a screening procedure in patients complaining of neurogenic intermittent claudication.
