Notes: Transmission probabilities and current densities of a two-step barrier heterostructure are calculated within the effective-mass approximation as a function of electron energy and applied bias. This system shows negative differential resistance under forward bias, because of a quasibound state in a triangular well, and no resonance under reverse bias, in the current density. The two-step barrier diode may show negative resistance in an ac field in the absence of a dc bias.

Notes: The charge exchange of N2+2 is distinguished from charge exchange of N+ in the measurement of the differential cross section. N2+2 charge exchanges with argon to produce predominantly Ar+ in its ground state and N+2 in its C 2Σ+u and D 2Π states. A vibrational progression is observed corresponding to the vibrational frequency in the C state. Also observed is the charge exchange of N+2(A 2Πu). A simple model is used to explain the data.

Notes: Spectra of the C2− B 2Σu+–X 2Σg+ transition have been obtained using a merged laser-ion beam spectrometer with sub-Doppler resolution. Strong perturbations of the B state by the previously unobserved A 2Πu state are analyzed to obtain the characteristics of the new state. The A state spectroscopic constants in wave numbers (with estimated standard errors) are found to be Te=4060±180, ωe=1656±20, ωexe=10.80±0.50, Be=1.630±0.005, and A=−24±1. All nine perturbations observed in this work and the five observed in the work of Herzberg and Lagerqvist are explained by the interaction of the A 2Πu state with the B state. These results, as well as the perturbation matrix elements, are compared with theoretical estimates and results for isoelectronic 13-electron species.

Notes: Fragment cross sections for electron impact dissociation of H3O+ into OH+ and O+, and for dissociation of D3O+ into D2O+ have been measured in a crossed beam appartus for electron energies from threshold to 1000 eV. The cross sections for O+ and OH+ rise abruptly at threshold indicating that the mechanism for dissociation is via production of an electronically excited state of H3O+ and direct dissociation into O+ and OH+. At high energy the cross section has a falloff σ∝ln(E)/E expected in the Bethe-Born approximation. At 200 eV electron energy the cross sections for fragments are: D2O+, σ=6.7±1.8×10−17 cm2; OH+, σ=3.0±0.6×10−17 cm2; O+, σ=7.9±1.6×10−18 cm2. The observed threshold energies for OH+ and O+ production are 14±3 and 19±3 eV, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The phase behavior in the dilute region of the didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)/water system is studied with a battery of techniques. The critical vesicle concentration (cvc), measured by tensiometry, conductimetry, ion-selective-electrode potentiometry and dye solubilization, is similar to the value reported in the literature. Moreover, the combination of surfactant-ion-selective- electrode and bromide-ion-selective-electrode potentiometry indicates that the vesicles are substantially ionized (α ≈ 0.5) in the proximity of the cvc. The transition from small unilamellar vesicles to larger multilamellar liposomes was detected at 0.2 wt% by viscometry, conductimetry and dye solubilization measurements. The rheology of the DDAB/water system was studied as a function of surfactant concentration and temperature. Non- Newtonian behavior, viscoelasticity, yield stresses and time-dependent flow behavior were observed. Maxima and minima in the dynamic moduli and in conductivity are related to structural changes and phase transitions. Moreover, in time-dependent shear flow, the microstructure is modified and the rheological response shifts from thixotropic to antithixotropic or vice versa, depending on the DDAB concentration and the level and duration of the final applied stress. The conductivity behavior in the Lam1 phase region can be qualitatively explained by the capillary superconductivity theory. This conductivity behavior occurs when the thickness of the aqueous lamella is of the same order of magnitude as the Debye length.

Notes: Abstract Single low doses (0.25 mg) of dexamethasone were given at 11 p.m., 2, 5 and 8 a.m. on separate days to five normal subjects. The concentrations of cortisol in plasma on the next day were significantly decreased compared to results after placebo administration, and cortisol suppression was maximal after dexamethasone had been given at 8 a.m. Our findings suggests that the postulated phase-advance of circadian rhythms is not a major cause of cortisol non-suppression in depressives given dexamethasone.

Notes: Abstract  We synthesised a porous siliceous material via hydrothermal hydrolysis of sodium silicate, using chitosan as a template. As far as we know, this is the first synthesis of siliceous porous material using chitosan as a template in a hydrothermal way. A fibrous material was obtained, whose macroscopic fibres were formed by a spongelike siliceous network with pores having a radius of 0.57 μm. The siliceous walls of the pores were, in turn, of the form of a microporous–mesoporous material; the pore radius distribution was polymodal with maxima at 0.84, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 nm and a broad band between 3 and 10 nm. This structure may be due to the aggregation of the hydrated chitosan helices in bundles of parallel fibres with different size and the gelation of the system. The aggregation process might be induced by the addition of silicate.
