    Notes: Abstract This review points out the problem of processing multiple sensory inputs and provides evidence that generalists suffer a disadvantage compared with specialists with respect to efficiency of host plant choice and discrimination. The specialists' mechanisms for improved efficiency are discussed as well as some of the processes that may be selected to increase processing efficiency in generalists. The fitness consequences of differences in efficiency of specialists and generalists are pointed out. One of the major disadvantages for generalists is the increase in vulnerability to ecological risks, especially risks imposed by various natural enemies. Efficiency-related factors are indicated as previously underestimated elements that could influence host affiliations including diet breadth and changes in host plant use.

    Notes: Abstract Caterpillars of the arctiid moth, Grammia geneura, are polyphagous, but species of Plantago are amongst their preferred food plants. A neuron in the medial styloconic sensillum on the galea has been shown to have a general phagostimulatory function. Experiments with binary mixtures and cross-adaptation have demonstrated that it responds to some sugars, to several amino acids, and also to catalpol. Catalpol is a plant secondary compound in Plantago and a phagostimulant for the caterpillars. The possible significance of combining sensitivity to nutrient compounds with sensitivity to a secondary compound is discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wachstum und Entwicklung von 15 Acridoidea-Arten wurde studiert und zwar mit und ohne Zugabe von Tanninsäure zur Nahrung in Konzentrationen bis zu 20% Trockensubstanz. In keinem Fall wurde die Verdauung beeinträchtigt; nur in den hohen Konzentrationen wurde die Futteraufnahme gesichert vermindert. Polyphage Arten zeigten keine ungünstige Effekte, und bei zwei Arten wirkte Tannin günstig. Dagegen wurde bei grasfressenden Heuschrecken das Wachstum reduziert, und die Überlebensrate war gering. Der Unterschied liegt im wesentlichen darin, dass bei grassfressenden Arten Tanninsäure in die peritrophische Membran eindringt und das Mitteldarmephithel beschädigt, wobei es zu Läsionen kommt und wobei Tannin in die Körperhöhle gelangt.
    Notes: Abstract The growth and development of fifteen species of Acridoidea were studied, with and without the addition of tannic acid in concentrations of up to 20% dry weight. In no case was digestion disturbed, and only at the high levels was there a significant reduction in consumption. Polyphagous species showed no deleterious effects, and in two species tannin was beneficial, while graminivorous acridids showed reduced growth rates and poor survival. The difference lies mainly in the fact that tannic acid penetrates the peritrophic membrane in the graminivorous species, and causes damage to the midgut epithelium with the eventual development of lesions and the occurrence of tannin in the haemocoel.

    Notes: Abstract Sensitivity of caterpillars of Heliothis virescens, a generalist, and H. subflexa, a specialist, to eight different plant secondary compounds was examined behaviorally. The compounds were nicotine hydrogen tartrate, hordenine, caffeine, sinigrin, linamarin, arbutin, chlorogenic acid, and salicin. All compounds deterred feeding, at least at the higher concentrations, but the generalist was less affected than the specialist. Thus the hypothesis that specialists have greater sensitivity to deterrents than generalists was supported. In most cases deterrence occurred on first encounter, indicating that the response was sensory; in some cases short-term postingestive effects also appeared to play a role. The larger quantities of deterrent-containing food ingested by H. virescens sometimes resulted in measurable postingestive effects during the second control test. This did not occur in H. subflexa, which more commonly rejected the deterrent-containing food on first contact. The contrast between the species is discussed in relation to tradeoffs involved in different diet breadths.

    Notes: Abstract Four species of Acridoidea were fed on wheat leaves with and without the condensed tannin, quebracho. In no case was it deleterious to survival and growth at levels below about 10% dry weight on the food. Similarly, consumption, digestibility, and utilization of food were unaffected at up to 10% dry weight. At higher concentrations, however, the consumption and the efficiency of conversion of digestion were reduced, although digestibility was little affected. The possible mechanisms for such tolerance are discussed, and contrast made with insects which are very sensitive to ingested condensed tannin.
