    Notes: Abstract The two-microelectrode voltage clamp technique was used to examine the kinetics and substrate specificity of the cloned renal Na+/myo-inositol cotransporter (SMIT) expressed in Xenopus oocytes. The steady-state myo-inositol-induced current was measured as a function of the applied membrane potential (V m ), the external myo-inositol concentration and the external Na+ concentration, yielding the kinetic parameters: K 0.5 MI , K 0.5 Na , and the Hill coefficient n. At 100 mM NaCl, K 0.5 MI was about 50 μm and was independent of V m . At 0.5 mm myo-inositol, K 0.5 Na ranged from 76 mm at V m =−50 mV to 40 mm at V m =−150 mV. n was voltage independent with a value of 1.9±0.2, suggesting that two Na+ ions are transported per molecule of myo-inositol. Phlorizin was an inhibitor with a voltage-dependent apparent K I of 64 μm at V m =−50 mV and 130 μm at V m = −150 mV. To examine sugar specificity, sugar-induced steady-state currents (at V m =−150 mV) were recorded for a series of sugars, each at an external concentration of 50 mm. The substrate selectivity series was myo-inositol, scyllo-inositol 〉 l-fucose 〉 l-xylose 〉 l-glucose, d-glucose, α-methyl-d-glucopyranoside 〉 d-galactose, d-fucose, 3-O-methyl-d-glucose, 2-deoxy-d-glucose 〉 d-xylose. For comparison, oocytes were injected with cRNA for the rabbit intestinal Na+/glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) and sugar-induced steady-state currents (at V m =−150 mV) were measured. For oocytes expressing SGLT1, the sugar selectivity was: d-glucose, α-methyl-d-glucopyranoside, d-galactose, d-fucose, 3-O-methyl-d-glucose 〉 d-xylose, l-xylose, 2-deoxy-d-glucose 〉 myo-inositol, l-glucose, l-fucose. The ability of SMIT to transport glucose and SGLT1 to transport myo-inositol was independently confirmed by monitoring the Na+-dependent uptake of 3H-d-glucose and 3H-myo-inositol, respectively. In common with SGLT1, SMIT gave a relaxation current in the presence of 100 mm Na+ that was abolished by phlorizin (0.5 mm). This transient current decayed with a voltage-sensitive time constant between 10 and 14 msec. The presteady-state current is apparently due to the reorientation of the cotransporter protein in the membrane in response to a change in V m . The kinetics of SMIT is accounted for by an ordered six-state nonrapid equilibrium model.

    Notes: Purpose - In operational tropical cyclone (TC) forecasting practice, there are usually many TC track guidances available from various official sources. When they do not converge, the guidances need to be ensembled by systematic approaches to formulate the best possible track as an official local TC track forecasting. Design/methodology/approach - The main approach of the research is focused on finding an atmospheric environment favourable for TC survival (genesis) with the help of commonly accepted knowledge in atmospheric physics that reveals mechanism driving evolution and change of synoptic patterns in the atmosphere, using routinely available observational data, i.e. identification of TCF/TCR areas. The techniques developed are then applied to ensemble the TC track guidances available operationally to formulate an official TC track forecasting. Findings - The results show that TC movement is very dependent on the atmospheric environment surrounding a TC. Whether the environment is favourable (TCF) or resistant (TCR) to survival of a TC system is a vital factor to determine where the TC moving. A systematic approach to the identification of the TCR/TCF areas is a key technique to ensemble available TC track guidances to formulate an official TC track forecasting. Originality/value - In operational TC forecasting, TC track forecasting is the most important and difficult issue. The results indicate that the systematic approach to TC track forecasting has philosophical justification, solid scientific ground, sound logic and practical viability, and thus, make TC track forecasting easy and effective.

    Notes: The microwave absorbing characteristics and resonance of Y-type hexagonal ferrite–rubber composites were investigated. The complex permeability and permittivity of Ni2−xZnxY ferrite bodies were measured using a network analyzer in the frequency range of 200 MHz–14 GHz. Two types of resonance, the domain wall and the spin rotational resonance, were observed. With a ferrite particle with a diameter of about 1 μm, only spin rotational resonance was observed. The first matching frequency, found in the ferrite–rubber composites, which was higher than that of spin rotational resonance, increased with spin rotational resonance frequency. It was also found that domain wall resonance had no effects on the microwave absorbing characteristics. Based on these findings, it could be concluded that the microwave absorbing characteristics were caused by only one type of resonance, the spin rotational resonance.

    Notes: In order to find an effective means of production of the interstitial Sm2Fe17Nx-type nitride, an alloy modification by the addition of small amount of alloying element (4 at.% Nb) and a hydrogenation treatment prior to the nitriding process have been employed. The effect of previous hydrogenation on the nitride formation of the Sm2Fe17(4 at. % Nb) alloy has been investigated systematically by means of thermopiezic analysis, thermomagnetic analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometer. It has been found that the previous hydrogen treatment facilitates significantly the formation of the nitride, and this may be due to the clean surface and the finer size of the particles caused by the hydrogen decrepitation. It has also been found that the combination of the alloy modification with the addition of Nb and the previous hydrogen treatment can be utilized effectively for the production of a Sm2Fe17Nx-type nitride.

    Notes: The total yield of H− ions, Y(Ein), produced in backscattering of low-energy H+ and H+2 ions from polycrystalline gold, tungsten, and molybdenum converter surfaces was measured at normal incidence in the energy range Ein=2–30 eV per nucleus. The yield per nucleus is independent of the ion mass. This indicates that the molecular ions are dissociated before colliding with the converter surface. A universal expression for Y(Ein) was developed by combining the electron tunneling theory with atomic scattering theory. This expression agrees well with measurements. The yield is completely characterized by two parameters, Eth/RE and RNη0, which can be determined experimentally: Y=0 for Ein=Eth/RE, and Y approaches the maximum yield Rη0 as Ein increases. These parameters were determined from measured H− yields in ion beam backscattering experiments, as well as for backscattering of thermal distributions of hydrogen atoms. For beam experiments, the maximum yield of 0.3 per nucleus was obtained for Mo/Cs converters with 1.5 eV work function. A higher maximum yield of 0.42 was obtained from experiments on backscattering thermal distributions of H atoms. This is attributed to high extraction fields. The universal yield formula made it possible to compare the results of the two different types of experiments. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
